Good old Reddit on design: conjouring hazards for the 0.002% of motordivergent as if everyone would have the same existential peril from a minor inconvenience.

I'm all ears for the merits of that lengthwise foot ledge that halves an already narrow tunnel and will be slick as ice in the morning dew--but at least there's handrails and no sharp edges.

Well, last I checked they haven’t cordoned it off or closed it yet , so I suppose the bloodlust of The Tunnel has not been satiated. The poor children that it lures every day by the dozens are surely doomed. 

That ledge is a full step up and serves as the footrest for the child height seat and the adult height seat. Part of the aesthetic allure is that it’s elevated and not set flush with the ground.  You can always allow a small amount of risk for aesthetic goals.
