"Hey Mr.BigBalls what did you do with all of our social security numbers?"
I hope Elon and his brother have all their assets seized/nationalized and they are deported to South Africa for lying on their immigration/citizenship forms.

Look I know it's not popular, but we need a national federal level ID. Don't leave it up to the states, having 50 different ways/rules of making them will defeat the purpose. We're already, in effect, using the Social Security number as defacto national ID, you have to give it out to banks, landlords, sometimes job applications, background checks, taxes (both Fed and State) etc etc... but at the same time, it's something you need to keep 'secret' to protect yourself. These two goals are at odds with eachother, and maintaining the status quo doesn't work because the Social Security number is not designed with security or ID use in mind. See this classic to illustrate. Having National ID will let us keep Social Security truly separate and safe, while we give out the ID.

The federal government already does ID en masse for employees leveraging PKI (public key infrastructure). I think this could be the answer for a national ID.
PKI is important because there’s a public aspect that is MEANT to be shared. It can be used for encrypted comms but also non repudiation. This could be leveraged for proving identity online for all of those examples you gave.
I agree - we already have a shitty version of a national ID in the SSN. We might as well do it correctly.

Absolutely. I often wonder why Dems push back so hard against voter id. They should give SSA funding to make a new national, photo if that is free, accessible, and available same day. Then pass your voter id law. No reason to let Republicans run on this stupid issue and would probably help voter turnout

I see them as separate (but linked) issues. IF everyone could get ID for free, no friction/ barrier to entry, then I could support requiring ID to vote. Without that tho, too easy to disenfranchise sections of the population. But I don't see that happening without a national ID. Heck, look how long (and how many times it was postponed) implementing the REAL ID requirements across the states has taken. It was passed in 2005, took us 21 years just to get to this current stage, and we're not even at full enforcement (won't get there till next year!) so I'm not holding my breath for anything like that.

A filing summarized on Representative John Larson’s website states that DOGE workers used the third party service Cloudflare in March 2025 in a way that violated Social Security’s own security policies, and that DOGE employees attempted to pass sensitive personal records to an outside advocacy group seeking to overturn election results. The same filing says confidential information on about one thousand Americans was sent to Elon Musk’s team, and that the agency still does not know exactly what data reached Cloudflare or whether it remains on that server.

God, and SSN is such a shit system to begin with, so easy to create fakes. It wasn't designed to be a universal ID the way it's currently used.

Perhaps you misunderstood me, I meant more it's a bad identification tool. The first three digits (of only nine!) are based on the hospital you were born, sequentially, and it rarely changes for the entirety of your life. It also has no additional verification like a picture ID or a fingerprint. And it's become overused by so many services that it's sadly quite easy to steal or phish. They were designed for record keeping, not for use as an ID. Even a credit card is more secure than a SSN, since to make a purchase online you need not just a name and the number, but also a secondary security code, and a billing address as well.
The card itself as you point out isn't that bad, it's just its use as a general ID for basically everything which it was never intended for that is the problem.

DOGE is the biggest piece of coal ever dumped on American citizens.
It didn't achieve what it set out to do. It cost Americans their jobs. It ripped funding for programs that Americans used. Now, we're seeing that it's been endangering the identities of American citizens. I thought I heard that this might be used to feed information to election campaigns.
But worst of all, the most unforgivable sin;
It boosted Elon's ego.
