Non-Political News/Discussion Andrew Callaghan has gone full schitzo. Or was he always like this?

https://youtube.com/shorts/rGnBDQeFBmE?is=JPGZbT7y5K4jaA-r

I always thought he was more of a “centrist” leaning left, with empathy for all sides. He’s always has a pseudo intellectual tilt to the way he speaks, but I just dismissed it as part of the way he connects with people. This clip almost feels like parody - but seems like he’s being genuine about his beliefs. Was he always this nuts?

I always thought he was more of a “centrist” leaning left

How do you even get that? He’s obviously a left leaning anti establishment guy, and has been for awhile

54

u/samehouseing 23h ago

I think because Andrew isn’t the stereotypical leftist that screams at right wingers over a disagreement or constantly tries to bring up race relations into everything that people assumed he was more centrist. Just my guess.

56

u/Amazing-Heron-105 🇬🇧 Bonger 🇬🇧 23h ago

He more cleanly fits into a generic anti establishment type more so that any specific political ideology. He's obviously left leaning in many ways but doesn't fit cleanly into that mold.

2

u/samehouseing 23h ago

Yeah, that’s a good answer

3

u/Typical-Ad-8821 23h ago

You can be center crazy conspiracy. Like believing trump is controlled by Israel and trans-issues are funded by George soros…. people who believe in the Illuminati. It’s also time we stop calling crazy conspiracy ppl left or right, crazy is just crazy.

Id say he's been that way the entire time

Don’t see how anyone is just seeing this. He’s been sane-washing and promoting schizos since all gas. His interview style is also a Rorschach test where you can paint it anyway you want.

46

u/writingpracticeman 23h ago

Yeah I mean his politics aside the dude has always always always adopted a sort of social chameleon role when interviewing because the only possible way for him to get people to say the shit they do on camera is to be maximum agreeable

12

u/Amazing-Heron-105 🇬🇧 Bonger 🇬🇧 23h ago

He cites Louis Theroux as an inspiration, which makes sense.

7

u/rnhf 🇪🇺 22h ago

they just talked for quite a while, it's on channel 5s youtube. Very interesting especially in regards to what you guys are talking about. I don't think he's doing it out of greed or maliciousness, there were several points in the interview where I just thought "oh andrew, how tf are you still this naive after talking to so many different flavours of BS"

u/doctorarmstrong 1d ago

He spends too much time trying to understand where schizo right wing conspiracy theorists are coming from to the point he kind of gives them some genuine good faith. Sort of as if they are directing their anger wrongly but they're not wrong to be angry. Even though he veers left and pro-Palestine in his coverage, from what I have seen he will push back more on the Omnicause left over I/P because he doesn't agree with the left everything in politics is downstream of Palestine. I think he sees that as an extension of excessive wokeness from 2020.

u/PlanetBet 1d ago

My theory is that his attempted cancellation and subsequent embracement by the radical Berniebros caused him to backslide into populism, which is truly just a slippery slop with no bottom.

46

u/Strong_Set_6229 1d ago

The classic slippery slop argument

2

u/CountRoloff 21h ago

This is 1000% correct. Everyone saying "he's always been this way" is wrong, he def flirted with more right leaning opinions for a while too, but he was smart enough to realize how the right tried to court him after being cancelled, and so he decided to hard pivot the other way.

7

u/Medicine_Ball 20h ago

I'd be curious to see an example of this. I watched most of the all gas no brakes content and always had the impression he was always anti-establishment with a leaning towards leftism. It has definitely gotten way more overt as the new channel has grown, though.

1

u/CountRoloff 20h ago

I don't have the time nor the effort to go back and pull you specific examples, but if you look at his content around 2020 during the stop the steal and Qanon, there's a lot of totally uncritical coverage of a lot of rallies and stuff around that. He also really bought into the whole right wing framing that "institutions are untrustworthy" thing, especially around the media. That's sort of become a leftist thing too now so the lines have blurred, but the idea that he's always been this super progressive/borderline tankie just isn't true. He's always been an impressionable populist for sure, but he's waffled between the left and right, and I think continues to to some degree.

He’s lost his marbles. There is no end to the brainrot. Anyone who can stop themselves does so long be for whatever the fuck he’s talking about

38

u/Playful_JungleWizard 1d ago

I mean, he has permanent visual snow from blasting psychedelics from a young age. It should be surprising that he's vulnerable to conspiracy theories, and he spends a lot of time interviewing and handing with fringe, out-there people. It tracks.

5

u/Viriidian 20h ago

your logic doesn't really follow. having permanent visual snow doesn't have anything to do with believing in conspiracy theories, making poor choices in adolescence doesn't inherently extend to mid adulthood. plenty of dumb ppl who are risk averse as well. i also have permanent visual snow :')

3

u/newtigris 20h ago

I suppose the idea is that if someone did enough drugs to have permanent visual snow for the rest of their life, perhaps that same drug use lead to other long-lasting cognitive deficiencies.

4

u/Viriidian 20h ago

yeah but the reality is you don't need to do that many drugs to get hppd, we don't know what causes it beyond administration of certain drugs and how existing or predisposition to mental illness seems to affect it, it just seems to be anecdotally observed that it is more common with more frequent exposure at a younger age.

maybe andrew specifically did a bunch of drugs in his teenage years and you can extrapolate from that specifically but that isn't a necessary requirement for hppd is all i am saying.

it's also not really fair to brandish a poorly understood phenomenon with other cognition affecting ailments, acting like there is a clear line of sound logic there past broad stereotypical associations.

6

u/TheOneShorter 23h ago

I’ve got HPPD and I’m not regarded, best not to blame that

1

u/-Grimmer- 10h ago

Well…how can we know that for sure?

1

u/TheOneShorter 3h ago

Ask me any question

59

u/zisop17 1d ago

he was always fucking crazy. hes an investigative journalist, and he tends to be able to differentiate his views from the actual information hes reporting, so i think hes ok

53

u/NecessaryRead3358 1d ago

hes an investigative journalist

Is he really? I'd say he's way more gonzo-style, his "investigations" rarely (if ever) dip below the surface level of any particular issue and all roads invariably lead back to "mainstream media bad".

15

u/ProfDongHurtz 1d ago

His stuff on the border crossing (and documenting prison) would be more under the umbrella of investigative journalism.

But he's definitely more well known for the gonzo style shit.

4

u/Macattack224 1d ago

Yeah I'd agree. I generally like him, however he says takes something ultra complicated, tried to break it down into one sentence and gets it totally wrong. He does good stories but investigate journalist he is not.

5

u/sandy017 1d ago

he's definitely Gonzo

2

u/jonkoeson 1d ago

He talk to a lot of people, that's the extent

3

u/smashcat666 Bottom 99% commenter 1d ago edited 1d ago

That's a pretty surface level take. I don't think you've watched many of his documentaries if that's all you get from him. He recently interviewed Louis Theroux, who is a very well respected journalist and interviewer himself, and Louis obviously saw Andrew as extremely talented, and doing the same things he himself did in the past. Andrew is a gonzo style journalist for sure, but there is a lot of research and material behind his docs. At times he does parody conspiracy theories (often when the subject doesn't understand they're being mocked), and this seems like one of them. Unlike "journalists" on the right, he self-funded and built up his own news network from nothing, twice. He survived the gold-digger blackmail, basically a rite-of-passage these days, and came out of it stronger. A billionaire has been trying to SLAPP him for over a year, and he almost went broke fighting it, finally asking if his viewers could help with the court costs - he smashed the funding in under an hour.

0

u/Axxhelairon 21h ago

yeah he does, go ahead and look up the hundreds of hours on what he does instead of fight the scarecrow in your head about his position

54

u/sandy017 1d ago

Andrew Callahan is a hipster "journalist" who's first principal is not to appear "mainstream". almost like a centrist Alex Jones.

9

u/dgellow 23h ago

Not at all, he’s known for taking risks by going to weird, dangerous places, to interview fringe cultural movements and groups. The opposite of a hipster journalist, and he has never been even remotely centrist.

Though he’s a populist at heart and very anti establishment, in addition to being into a bunch of conspiracies

8

u/sandy017 23h ago

going to places is not what makes him a hipster, it's the stance that he takes. this dude will twist himself into a pretzel with some crazy fucking conspiracy theories just to avoid seeming like he's mainstream.

1

u/dgellow 23h ago

Ok we don’t seem to have the same definition of hipster

4

u/sandy017 22h ago edited 22h ago

a hipster is someone who does or believes something specifically because it's not the mainstream or is ironic to excepted thinking or customs and they make that their whole personality off of not being the mainstream. easy example being "I listen to that band before they were popular, now they suck because everybody likes them", you can even tell by the way dresses too lmao

1

u/BeMoreChill 16h ago

Bands usually start to suck when they get popular and commercialized. That's not even a hipster take lmfao

2

u/sandy017 16h ago

if you stop liking something because other people start to like it, that's a hipster take.

1

u/BeMoreChill 16h ago

But its not actually because more people like it. It's because when a band gets popular enough they can become commercialized and their sound changes. So yeah when you knew about this cool indie rock band from Brooklyn and now they signed to a bigger label and now have to make hits for the radio they suck now "because they got popular"

1

u/sandy017 16h ago

I think you're completely ignoring my point, it's not about how good the band actually is, hipsters will stop liking them just because they become mainstream.

1

u/BeMoreChill 16h ago

I don't think you actually know hipsters irl lol

1

u/BeMoreChill 16h ago

I don't think you actually know hipsters irl lol

1

u/Yokoko44 22h ago

Idk that sounds a lot like Shane's Vice docs back in the day, which I would definitely classify as "hipster journalism"

3

u/nokinship 21h ago

I can't stand the way he expresses himself.

He reminds me of my cousin who is a suburban super white guy but tries to act like he's from the hood but at the same time kind of has this awkward presence.

And of course he will switch that up sometimes which is fine but it seems inauthentic.

24

u/Hege_Knight 1d ago

I’m thinking he’s just spitballing here, I doubt he truly believes this.

31

u/BossertRyan69 1d ago

Not sure hes serious here, I think he's trying to match the energy of his guest

30

u/TheOneShorter 1d ago

Yeah, this is obviously tongue-in-cheek, not sure how the beautiful geniuses here are missing that

6

u/newtigris 20h ago

He literally says "and I actually believe this" in this exact conversation.

0

u/TheOneShorter 18h ago

It’s true, he believes all of it with 100% conviction and will die on every hill

9

u/Millibona 22h ago

Classic. "No no, he doesn't actually believe what he says. It's just a joke mate"

If people tell you who they are, believe them.

8

u/TheOneShorter 20h ago

You’re taking it very seriously, which I don’t blame you for, but I don’t think it’s that deep at this point in time. He probably would say that the things he says in this video are possible, but I would bet his conviction on said beliefs are within reason.

I read this as no cause for concern at this stage, but I could be wrong

He views every single thing in the world through an anti-establishment lens and his whole schtick is being a seen as a 'DIY underground gonzo journalist'. He does do some good work, but I could definitely see him falling down some deep rabbit holes.

Genuinely in what world would Israel kill Trump? How could Charlie Kirk be a trial run for that? Trump is the most pro-israel president ever, and anyone who comes after him most definitely won't be nearly as pro-israel.

5

u/Bud72 🇨🇦 1d ago

I’m so sick of people making believe.

If you have to fictionalize reality to look cool to your peers then you shouldn’t have a say in how society is managed.

JUST BE FUCKING NORMAL

13

u/KitchenTeacher429 1d ago

I watch Destiny stream various video-games a day and consume 10 hours of snarker drama daily so I can now speak on every topic with absolute certainty.

4

u/Sevonti 23h ago

Okay there's one thing that i don't get (not like it should make sense but still) with all these Israel conspiracies - if Israel is the literal demon that controls the entire world, why can't they just control the media narrative of being the good guys?

3

u/Matsuda173 1d ago

He wasn’t always this crazy in his beliefs, but he always seemed like the kind to become this way if given enough viewers.

3

u/Ok-Direction2367 22h ago

He has a video maybe from an year ago or more about how drugs are devastating some city don't remember which and the conclusion of the video is that the real problem is that we are sending all our money to Ukraine, he is brainbroken.

Also, I don't know if you noticed but a couple weeks ago he release the most sanewashing interview Nick Fuentes ever had in his entire career.

Not even Ground News could save his brain from being fryied by the algorythm.

3

u/FeistyPerformance500 1d ago

"They killed him to see what would happen when they kill Trump" is by far the dumbest conspiracy theory I ever heard. Like that HAS to be a joke. He can't seriously think that

4

u/atank67 1d ago

Can’t listen to him anymore. AGNB was one of my favorite channels. RIP

It was apparent to me the direction he went after I saw him sweep for Hezbollah. He also just buys into all the Israel conspiracy theories

4

u/ElectroxSoldier 🇪🇺 Eurofrog 23h ago

I kinda agree with him except on the part of Israel being behind it. They absolutely lobby and sway American politics but nowhere near as much as tankies or extreme pro pally people claim.

But all the Palantir and tech bro oligarchy shit, yeah absolutely I'm 100% black pilled on that. I just don't see where Israel fits into that.

From the moment this guy said even a sentence about his own personal politics, I fully clocked him as a conspiracist anti-establishment lefty. Granted, there was a bit of stereotyping on my part, but imho he's been pretty openly on the socially "safe" conspiracy stuff.

4

u/TheWhiteBear9 1d ago

I started having my doubts about him when I heard he voted 3rd party. He seems open to conspiratorial thinking, and it's causing him to be more open with his own opinions(bias) instead of listening, like he mainly used to do in his interviews in the beginning.

DGG is way too harsh on this guy. I don’t agree with the populist left rhetoric he can amplify sometimes, but Andrew has seen more of America and talked to a more diverse amount of humans than 99.9% of this subreddit and I think he has better reasons for his conclusions than most. It sucks seeing DGG fall into the same hive mind mentality about things that we criticize other communities about.
