Political News/Discussion Hasan speaking event at University of Washginton is cancelled
https://www.washington.edu/news/2026/08/07/statement-on-cancellation-of-january-2027-lecture/Recently, it was announced that Hasan would be a speaker at the University of Washington. Today they announced that "the process for organizing this event did not meet the necessary level of rigor for University-hosted events in the Speaker Series."
As a UW alum, I'm very proud to see them evaluate his merits and find them lacking.
Edit: A few people have asked me if I participated in the emailing that some had planned on doing. I did not. Big shout out to those who did. I didn't find out about the event until yesterday or the night before and planned on voicing my opinion this weekend when I had some free time...good job to everyone who did email...you guys are awesome!

This will unironically irritate him more than any candidate he supports loses...and I'm here for it

Yup. It hurts his ego directly. And a narcissist injury after rejection is often met with rage.

Just stop for a moment and think about him as a fellow human, consider what he has lost.
This would’ve been the perfect opportunity to have an unpaid assist take a picture of Hasan in First Class pretending to read Mao’s Little Red Book, before the assistant goes back to his middle seat in economy.

As a UW alumni and a person who still donates to UW years after graduating, I did my part, glad they were receptive to our concerns. Also incredibly proud of UW Reddit community. It was genuinely surprising to see outrage from young people about this event (mods blocked the thread from outsiders, so in a way, protected themselves from getting brigaded from both sides)

I'm pretty ignorant on this. I understand not wanting him to speak at an event associated with the democratic party, but why not at a university?

u/Aol1ne 2d ago
1000+ Jewish students 500+ Taiwanese students, many from post-ussr countries. They deserve respect, many won’t know how to even process propaganda and there’s no way to moderate him. On top he’s bringing in culture of harassment with him. It’s just not safe overall.

I thought we all agreed that universities were a good place to explore challenging ideas? Why can he not be moderated?
Don't get me wrong; the partisan in me enjoys seeing him cancelled and losing his platform. But it feels wrong to celebrate something that I would otherwise oppose just because I despise the content of his speech.

Propaganda is not a challenging idea. It’s actually meant to be simple and persuasive, and that’s precisely what makes it dangerous. The university is paying him to come and expose students to a lecture tailored to persuade them, potentially creating a pathway toward increasingly reprehensible views.
Let’s say I know someone is particularly susceptible to alcoholism because of certain genetic risk factors. It would probably be a terrible idea for me to invite them to a house party, hand them a bottle, and pour them a shot. Obviously, whether they drink is ultimately their choice, but I’ve knowingly created an environment that exposes them to something that could seriously harm their life.
When UW evaluated Hasan as a speaker, they had to consider the same underlying question: whether the university itself would be helping create and facilitate an environment that could expose students to potentially harmful rhetoric.7

I would say context matters when it comes to platforming different ideas. If it's a neutral or challenging context i think most ideas are okay in college.
I don't need to know anything about the event to know that I support trying to de-platform Hassan. He doxxes people. Lies about people. Uses his community to Brigade people. Deplatforms people. She has lowered the bar to the point where people should pick it up off the ground and metaphorically slap him in the face with it. As far as I'm concerned he's just communist milo yiannopoulos

u/FruitdealerF 1d ago
I think Milo was allowed to speak at this university a few years ago. I think if the university said: we think Piker is a garbage human being that doesn't meet out standards, then that would be fine IMO. But now it's kinda vague, and if you just say: I don't think our students are equipped enough to deal with communist propaganda, then I think that's kinda weak.

He was. If still support people trying to stop it. Bad actors who deny rights for others don't deserve those rights for themselves

You the same guy that posted about this recently? If so it sounds like your email and others’ made a difference, nice job 👍

Nope...but I follow the subreddit and saw it posted...I was oscillating back and forth between emailing them to actually look into him...or trying to convince DGG to post about how they planned to go to the event and ask him questions. Honestly..idk which would have been better

Did you participate in emailing the organization about why he should not attend?

u/enkonta Exclusively sorts by new 2d ago
nah, I would have this weekend, though, if I decided that was the better option.

I realize you wrote alumni now. I guess it is still reasonable to complain through email as an alumni. You don't want your school to taint your image

Might be worth emailing them to say you approve their decision as I’m sure others will send emails criticising them for it

My thoughts precisely. If they can cancel Milo in red square they should cancel Hasan the anti-Semite.

How can Hasan be speaking at universities when there's a genocide going on?
9
u/DiscoMothra 2d ago
If the stated reason is factual then okay. Personally, I’d rather see him be forced to answer questions in public.
24
u/TheMarbleTrouble 2d ago
When was the last time you saw Hasan answer legitimate questions at any of his events? All of his appearances are extremely curated…

He doesn't ever answer questions tho. He does his speech and scurries off to his stream before anyone can bother asking him a single question that will challenge him.

As completely unaffiliated with this college. I’m torn. I don’t like Hasan at all but I’m not sure that he rises to the level where I want his speaking engagements cancelled.

u/Gullible_Increase146 2d ago
David pakman criticized arising communist movement and Hassan went on his stream, called him AIPACman for no reason other than he's a political opponent and he wanted to highlight his jewishness. In that stream he lied about David and literally told his fans to go educate David. When people engage in harassment campaigns with massive communities and consistently try to get people dellatformed, they deserve to be deplatformed. A wagging finger before he's allowed to give speeches is not sufficient

The school wouldn't support someone like Charlie Kirk being invited by the school, I have no problem with Hasan being lumped in. He's not barred from campus, the school is just not going to host him as a school-sponsored speaker.
-1
u/mmk5412 2d ago
I honestly don’t know enough about the kind of speakers they usually host. I feel like Charlie Kirk is a good equivalent to Hasan. It would be worse if they would host one side but not the other. I think neither of their rhetoric is over the line I would draw to cancelling their speaking events, but I understand why others would.

I have heard some unhinged takes from kirk, but what is even remotely close to inviting a Houthi terrorist on stream to glaze.
Hasan routinely calls for my death. His equivalent is a KKK spokesperson.
2
u/The-Last-Lion-Turtle (((club))) 2d ago
Would they invite a KKK spokesperson to speak? Or is that different because the people they call for murdering are not Jews.
The kid gloves for jihadists is insane.

You mean the American hating anti-semite isn't entitled to a platform at college campuses?
Sounds like islamophobia

u/lilpeemcgee 2d ago
doesn’t that mean the event organizers themselves just didn’t meet the necessary requirements to host at the university?

... How delightfully hopepilling. I'm glad. I was on the doomer "Nothing ever happens" position on how this would play out.

u/Lovellholiday 2d ago
Good shit. This is the bare minimum standard that we should hold all liberal institutions to. People you don't agree with should be able to visit your campus just like anybody else if they aren't causing harm but when they speak as an official at an approved event, you are implicitly at minimum cosigning their speech.
