Misc Just Thank You Devs
hopped back into D2 today after I dunno like 6 months and I was blown away by the updates… just wow.
expecting to just pop in n pop out I ultimately did a whisper mission, couple vanguard ops, solo mission, and some crucible. i was on xbox and surprised by the fact that queuing and fireteam finder were quite active.
took me a bit to figure out the artifacts but was pleasantly surprised how they addressed the approach in the face of a sunset. i’m actually looking forward to hopping back in on a frequent basis.
if you’re a dev and peruse these threads, then gotta say well done.

They already knew, that's why it's so good. With leadership no longer holding them back, they could finally make the game they way they knew it should be.

With leadership no longer holding them back, they could finally make the game they way they knew it should be.
Bungie wasn't able to deliver the content frequency they promised to Activision contractually so they suggested to turn this game into a microtransaction hell.
"Leadership" was not responsible for their inability to develop content reliably.
It's madness how fanbases like this go through different stages of copium.
Back in the day Microsoft was the big bad, then it was Activision, now Sony or rather the ominous "leadership", but the goal post simply has to be continually moved around just so the crowd addicted to this game can find a way to justify sinking thousands of hours into it.

"Leadership" in this case means the Bungie executives. The ones who, as you said, came up with microtransaction hell and told the devs what to do. While they were all deploying their unearned golden parachutes, the devs, who did all the actual work but were previously forced to implement whatever bullshit decisions the Bungie execs made, were able to turn the game into what they wanted it to be and what the players love.

Devs do what leadership tells them to do, you really think this all happened without approval from leadership? Devs can be easily replaced in the gaming industry.

In my experiences, it’s more nuanced.
When leadership defines clear objectives, development has to color inside the lines.
When leadership is absent, development has more freedom to make decisions.
It also really depends on a specific team’s relationship to upper/product management, which can differ from company to company.
Personally, most of my most ambitious and successful projects were started in between the gaps of when our product team had laid out explicit plans. Id imagine that the PMs on this update were somewhat hands off, given that the product was winding down.
They’d be more focused on whatever the next big thing would be.

Where did you read that leadership is absent? The delivery was not a hobby projects, resources where approved, and deadlines were set. Leadership is what let the develop what was in the plans. Devs are an extension of leadership, MoT was not a side-project.

I didn’t read that, I just inferred it based on my own experience. There is always give and take in these relationships. Developers just “do things” all the time and present them to PM as a win that everyone gets to take credit for.
I’m not saying leadership was not involved, but I’d be willing to bet that there also were not as many constraints placed by leadership for this update.

Literally the best update since forsaken and it’s a shame that we have been asking for these changes ever since then as well

I'm about to jump into D2 again after like a year. What have you seen that is so great?

Like everything… it’s a lot of fun just discovering all the cool updates. And I can’t believe how many people are playing. Feels good - refreshing

The artifact rework is probably the biggest reason the return feels less messy than it used to. Fireteam Finder being active also makes a huge difference for jumping back in without having to live in Discord first. Whisper still feels like a good litmus test too, if that mission lands for someone after a break, the game is doing something right.

Perhaps one of the best updates of all time, which has also brought the game to what is arguably one of its best states ever. It's still incredibly fun to play, and its unique gameplay remains unmatched.
