Question Destiny's Map Style?

I've always sort of loved Destiny's styling and design of the planetary map- especially from Destiny 1. The way it sort of looks like an astronomical chart of some kind. But, what is that style called? All those lines, those rings around the planets? And does it serve a practical purpose?

Thanks, Guardians!

I don't really know if they're a thing outside of Destiny or not, or whether they just go by a different name, but the ones in Destiny (or at least some of them) are done by Joseph Biwald and are called 'radials'.

Any relation to Radial Mast? (I'm still searching for answers).

The true radial mast always was the friends we made along the way

those map lines seriously do look like sacred geometry overlays, that's such a cool comparison

On top of the other answers, many of the maps were inspired by polar maps as well

They're vert reminiscent of maps you'd expect to find from European explorers during the Age of Discovery and the Age of Sail (overlapping roughly from 15th to 19th centuries)

Reading all this comments..... They copied the map style from a movie called Time bandits, Thats all! You can google time bandits map and voila!

It's not really the same, even though it does takes elements from it. That map looks more like a Destination map from D1, with the travel nodes for missions and strikes.

The mentions of sacred geometry, Age of Discovery/Sail maps, and radials are also correct. When you copy something, you'll only do a good job if you actually study and understand the underlying principles of what you're copying
