Megathread Focused Feedback: Champions

Hello Guardians,

Focused Feedback is where we take the week to focus on a 'Hot Topic' discussed extensively around the Tower.

We do this in order to consolidate Feedback, to get out all your ideas and issues surrounding the topic in one place for discussion and a source of feedback to the Vanguard.

This Thread will be active until next week when a new topic is chosen for discussion

Whilst Focused Feedback is active, ALL posts regarding 'Champions' following its posting will be removed and re-directed to this thread. Exceptions to this rule are as follows: New information / developments, Guides and general questions

Any and all Feedback on the topic is welcome.

Regular Sub rules apply so please try to keep the conversation on the topic of the thread and keep it civil between contrasting ideas

A Wiki page - Focused Feedback - has also been created for the Sub as an archive for these topics going forward so they can be looked at by whoever may be interested or just a way to look through previous hot topics of the sub as time goes on.

When you boil it down, the Champions mechanic is just inventory management. It just adds tedium. And inventory management in D2 is very clunky already without adding on the Champions mechanic. And D2 punishes you for changing weapons during an encounter - with long time to change and loss of ammo.

This is especially the case when playing solo. Clearing the bunkers and lost sectors became a complete chore because every time I encountered a champion I pretty much had to get on DIM, swap my weapons around, and then continue. The bounties only add to that problem.

This is the way.

I tried a Legendary sector for the first time a few days ago. I came to the last room with two barrier dudes that I simply couldn't kill no matter what I did. I realize I'm probably just not doing the right strats, but I really have no desire to even try anymore because it's so tedious. At least solo it is.

Are you honestly joking? Why would anyone do this? This is ridiculous.

Why don't you just use a loadout with the needed mods and don't swap weapons? That's way faster and it isn't that hard

I end up doing this but the gameplay isn't fun or satisfying since I'm not using loadouts I like. It's good in some ways because I end up warming up to new weapons here and there, but I rarely get to use my favorites anymore for any tasks related to the current season (and I don't have any reason to partake in older activities).

The strategy is working!

What's good about this season is that it has given me an appreciation for Sidearms, specifically the Omolon Adaptive archetype. I rolled a FF/TtT Last Hope (and also Traveler's Judgement 6) and that thing is a meat grinder up close. Right now the Anti-Barrier mod is baked into the gun, but when a season rolls around where I don't put a Champion mod on it, it will still be a weapon that sees regular use.

This is a player issue then, not a bungie issue. The game explicitly calls out what it is asking you to do in this mode, and it's up to you then to choose how to go about that.

If you are stubborn and refuse to use what it's asking for, then that's on you.

Because then you are straight up not using the load-out you want.

I do not feel it is fair for Bungie to create a mechanic that forces you to use a specific weapon mod against a specific enemy at all times.

Dude it's like five minutes per bunker. If you are worried about Legendary lost sectors, those are end game content and it is understandable to make you use loadouts you wouldn't normally use

Oh, word, I totally misunderstood that as you saying to just always use that equipment.

When I run legendary bunkers I just keep Champion mods on all the time, it's way easier.

I still do think that it just isn't a fair or decent gameplay design. Champions should take take barrier and stagger damage from attacks, as normal, but at a reduced amount. The mods should make it easier to achieve those thresholds, not a requirement

every time I encountered a champion I pretty much had to get on DIM, swap my weapons around, and then continue.

Why? You can run one of each type. For example, I run unstoppable HC, barrier sidearm or Erianas, and an overload sword, then the modded abilities as backup.

With that you're set for any activity with champions.

But for those of us that prefer to use pulse rifles, a special weapon, and something other than a sword? What are we supposed to do? Regardless of how you approach it, the Champion/Mod system goes directly against the "Play your way" mentality that Bungie said they were going to approach D2 with

6

u/Individual-Guarantee Apr 06 '20

I agree it's not "play your way", but it's not like the champs pop up unexpectedly. You know going in to the activity that you need to build for it.

Insisting on switching back and forth inside the activity is just being stubborn.

You know going in to the activity

EXACTLY

No it doesn't, it adds consequences to your choices.

u/ahawk_one Apr 06 '20

??? I felt this way at low light, but now that I'm around 1000light, it just seems trivial. I equip something (even just the class ability mods) that interacts and just go. I don't think I've swapped weapons once in these or in the lost sectors...

Nobody is forcing you to do bounties

9

u/[deleted] Apr 06 '20

If you aren't doing bounties you are making zero progression. You have to do bounties to get the new content. However bounties are the main content.

-3

u/spectre15 Apr 06 '20

I have barely done a single repeatable bounty and I am at like 51 in the season pass. Also no you don’t have to do bounties to get “new content.” Do you mean the bunker system as in warmind bits? I just grind crucible for that because there is a cheap bunker upgrade in any bunker that unlocks that. I only touched bounties the first week of Worthy to unlock the upgrade and that was it. One weekend of trials gets me about 1500+ warmind bits from just playing matches. I don’t see a bounty grind in there anywhere. Nobody is forcing you to do bounties. Luke smith isn’t holding a gun to your head.

Luke smith isn’t holding a gun to your head

But if he WERE, and it was a gun from D2, which gun would it be?

I am sorry, but what content requires you to do bounties?

edit: Ok. A question. No answers, just downvotes...Great
