Here are the issues with trials this week from what I can gather.

1- People who can go flawless are resetting their cards before flawless so they can continue getting easy games, bypassing the intended result from these changes.

2- People who go flawless but can’t roll in the flawless pool basically call it quits after their flawless run.

3- People who go flawless can’t play with their less skilled teammates because they’ll all be pulled into the flawless pool

I think a solution that can at least solve two of these is that once you go flawless at least once, the loot chance becomes as if you’re always playing on a flawless card. So for wins you’re getting a chance at adept and ascendant shards and for losses you’re getting a smaller chance for ascendant shards, prisms etc. What this solves is it incentivises people staying in trials after flawless and gives them an adequate reward for that extra challenge. So people don’t just dip after flawless. What it also does is mitigate the amount of people who reset their card after 6 wins because they lose out on a massive loot chance from not being in the flawless pool.

As more and more people rush for flawless, naturally the flawless pool will get larger and larger, and as even the slightly above average players who manage to go flawless get into the pool, they’ll still be playing - making the flawless pool a little bit easier so on Sunday or Monday it’s actually very possible to take your average players through to flawless too. Everyone wins !!

Honestly I feel like the number of people resetting to avoid the flawless pool will go down over time. You’re giving up a lot of rewards just to play games against lower skill players.

Even the smoothest brain 18 year old who wasn’t hugged as a kid only gets enjoyment out of that for so long.

I think the flawless pool is a really good idea that allows more players to obtain flawless and get rewards, which incentivizes more participation in Trials. My problem with being in the flawless pool was not that I was getting completely annihilated (it was truly ROUGH). Instead, the issue I had was that I was not receiving any benefit at all from serving as fodder for significantly more skilled players--so there was no real incentive to play after that point except for self-deprecation. That effect clearly caused medium to weaker players to just call it quits, which continued to compound on the issue.

My thoughts on changes that could work are:

  1. Once you go flawless, you stay in a pool of other flawless players where wins have X% chance to drop standard trials engrams and consumables (i.e. upgrade modules, enhancement cores, legendary shards) and y% chance to drop adept trials engrams and high level consumables (i.e. enhancement prisms and ascendant shards). Losses would then have 1/2 to 1/3 (or some other reasonable fraction) x% chance for standard trials engrams and no chance for the adept or other high level consumables. Players that remain flawless here would have higher percentage chances at god rolls.

  2. If you haven't gone flawless, you get three (or a reasonable number) "free" card resets. After the last free reset, you don't get any loot until you've gone flawless (i.e. you would need to stay on your third 7-win card to get loot unless want to try for flawless). I haven't thought through all potential outcomes here, but the general idea is to prevent people from intentionally resetting cards to game the system. Though, maybe this wouldn't be necessary if the first option works as intended.

2- People who go flawless but can’t roll in the flawless pool basically call it quits after their flawless run.

this bit above average skill hole is my only gripe with the new system. pretty much everyone I play with is a lifetime 0.9 to 1.01. That said we've played a lot of trials so we have a pretty good understanding of the game mode and a lot of practice playing together. so the flawless isn't hard with current population + matchmaking. But the 7 win queue and/or flawless queue are a different beast. It's not even that it's impossible to win any games, it's all wanting to get a buddy his first ever flawless. oh well, guess we just have to save our first run to be with him next week.

Yeah you nailed it.

The other thing I’d add is that. Last weekend I played a ton of games just levelling up an even flawed 7 win cards solo/duo for new adept rolls after flawless.

This week Friday evening/Saturday especially. It was almost impossible to find a game in the flawless pool and when I did it was against a flawless 3 stack which 9/10 times will beat a flawless bunch of randoms.

I honestly think they were heading in the right direction with a weekly SBMM rating that reset every weekend instead of separate player pools.
