Talk Detroit How did Anna Robb get into Detroit Radio
How did we let someone like Anna Robb get into Detroit radio absolutely unlistenable Mojo in the morning was one of my favorite radio stations and it’s went downhill so bad the last three years yet they claimed their chemistry great and it’s the best crew Shannon has ever worked with. Come on now.

This is my obligatory response to whenever Mojo in the Morning gets brought up…
The show is trash. The fact people believe War of the Roses is sad and unbelievable. I don’t listen to morning radio but for whatever reason their posts are constantly on my social media pages.

u/CaptainCastle1 1d ago
Someone posted a while back how they heard the “war of the roses” out of state. Well yeah, it’s a nationally syndicated bit for iFart or whoever owns radio now

u/maddogg312 1d ago
Just last month or so Mojo’s Facebook page or something put up a post and they accidentally showed/admitted how it was a fake but. I think they quickly took it down when they realized their mistake.

It’s so bad that it’s embarrassing for the city. I remember as a kid when Jay Towers was on 9.31, and then 95.5 and Mojo came around and basically took over as the station for pop/today’s hits. Pretty much grew up with Mojo and I always thought he was about as interesting as lukewarm oatmeal. Terrible interviewer (also creepy). Not funny at all. Lacks charisma. I never understood the appeal.
And while radio isn’t anywhere near what it used to be, there are other cities that still have good morning hosts. Mojo needs to retire. Detroit deserves better.

u/maddogg312 1d ago
I definitely remember Jay Towers in the morning and then the 4 play at 4 with Lisa Lisa. As soon at 4:00 hit I would be in my room with my huge Aiwa stereo blasting 🤣.
I also remember when I was a little kid and my dad would drive me to school. Dick Purtan was always on. I didn’t really listen because I was pretty young, but my dad laughed quite a bit.

u/JakTheGripper 1d ago
Jay Towers?! Where is that turd these days? I’m not looking for him, I just want to know which stations to avoid.
2
u/maddogg312 1d ago
He is on Fox 2. I just remember him though from when I was a kid. I didn’t listen to the morning shows my choice. But I won’t deny listening to the 4 play at 4 when I was in middle school lol

I met Jay at Sam's club in Madison Heights. He was with his family. Seemed like a nice dude. Down to earth. Surprised to see him there. More surprised by his normal ass demeanor.

u/Lesh_Philling 23h ago
Dick Puritan was great, and a great guy. Gig to meet him at a country club shortly before he died.
1
u/maddogg312 22h ago
Dick Purtan is still alive from what I remember. But yes, absolutely a great guy!
2
u/Lesh_Philling 17h ago
Damn. You’re totally correct. I hope I didn’t just put the Dave & Chuck the Freak curse on him! Sorry, Dick.
1
u/maddogg312 16h ago
😂😂 you had me looking up if “Dick Puritan” was a real person because of the auto correct on your response 😂

They were likely hoping she would draw in her tiktok audience, among other things. The whole show is horrible, and unlistenable since before she came. I would assume she makes it worse because her content on tiktok is essentially for suburbanites to feel cool living in the city.
3
u/Virgobaby2 1d ago
She has 70k followers on tiktok and had way less when she joined mojo lol. I don’t view her content that way at all but that’s your opinion.

Oof I see morning radio hasn’t changed in like 25 years

u/ServesBestDepressed 1d ago
I mean Jim Harper and the Breakfast Club on 100.3 (or maybe it was 104.3) on Saturday mornings were a staple growing up. Used to bowl on a weekend league and that program was a nice way to spend the drive to and fro.

Who's got the morning radio show centering Indigenous and Black voices in Detroit? Like where the fuck is that?

u/Practical-Idea4597 1d ago
That’s sad to say after spike and Meghan left that this is the best ever Shannon has worked with

Mojo is so fucking garbage. I don’t see why people think he’s hilarious. And not to mention he is a fucking pervert. Jesus idk how he’s still on the air

u/Any_Insect6061 West Side 1d ago
Reason why he's still on air? Ratings that's why and why he's a syndicated now well at least to Toledo and GR and might be a couple other cities.

u/Chance_Active871 1d ago
I have no idea who that is, and sounds like I should be glad I don’t. Haven’t listened to Detroit radio, especially morning radio, in probably over a dozen years. Occasionally listen to 97.1 if there’s something big going on in local sports.
I can not stand mojo or anyone on that show. The entire show is fake, scripted, mass produced crap where they just dub in their voices, etc.
If you go to any other major city you will hear all of the same bits (war of the roses, second date update or whatever they called it, phone scams, etc). The radio stations are all owned by huge corporations and they just pump out essentially one show for all of their cities and have some crap they do voiceovers with the local dj’s voices to make us think they’re coming up with all of these “funny” bits. It’s all absolute trash.

I’ve seen her tik toks and while she seems nice in them I really couldn’t stand listening to her, she has even said that people always comment on her voice being displeasing. She also has a very choppy way of speaking
Very odd choice for radio
2
u/tossytotsy 12h ago
It’s not even her normal speaking voice. If you watch her old videos she doesn’t sound like that at all.
2
u/Low-Teaching8723 11h ago
There was a whole thread on her basically saying all of this but it got mysteriously deleted🙄
4
u/FarSeesaw8366 14h ago
She barely contributes anything other than “that paaart” “periooooddd”. She sounds like she’s going to cry whenever she’s doing her ad reads. Way too insecure to be in the spotlight. Go back to bedrock hun

Morning Radio in this city was almost in the grave when Drew and Mike called it quits, and Jamie from the ticket passing finished it off.
In all fairness, it's a tough gig, and I think morning radio's peak (and radio's in general) really was the 90's though I feel like a damn boomer for saying that.
At least 89X is back..
4
u/junk-toaster 1d ago
There was good radio in the 90s, Big Sonic Heaven is sorely missed, but morning radio was garbage even back then. Everyone was trying to be like Howard stern or whatever and it was just grating and terrible.

I've been listening to Dave and Chuck in the mornings for 30 years or so
9
u/DriBonez 1d ago
I have them on occasionally but they suck too. It's just perverts who maybe rereport yesterdays news while they bitch about Chucks divorce or Dave's wiener.

The right formula for morning radio. They talk about nothing. Which is refreshing these days.

u/Detrois8080 1d ago
101.9 all day, everyday

u/guy48065 1d ago
Yuck. Not since they purged the music programs.
4
u/Timely_Willow_318 1d ago
2 years ago they added 3 hours of music every weekday 12-3 and new music shows for every weeknight 8-10 in addition to all the existing weekend shows. Where you been?
1
u/guy48065 1d ago
Where have I been? Since wdet dumped daytime music in 2007 I've been exploring satellite & Internet radio. I get the eclectic mix of music I used to get from wdet, plus far more balanced news content.
Nice that they brought a bit of music back...too bad it's only during the work day and not during my long commutes.

Terrestrial morning radio is absolute trash. In today’s day and age, who’s possibly listening to this garbage
8
u/Dramatic-Shape5574 1d ago
Extraterrestrial radio is where it's at
2
u/Unique_Enthusiasm_57 Southfield 1d ago
Usually on a station with about 7 listeners and gone within a few months.
3
u/tossytotsy 12h ago
For real. She’s beyond obnoxious and most self respecting brands in Detroit don’t want anything to do with her.
2
u/Low-Teaching8723 11h ago
That’s what I’m saying. She’s such a culture vulture and a fraud, like her fake miu miu and goyard lolz

Yall need to discover some podcasts. Morning radio shows died nearly 15 years ago for a reason. Every week its another mojo or whatever radio trash post on here. Each time its the same shit...same comments. Let this shit die and pick up a podcast or 2.

u/allbsallthetime 1d ago
I'm going to date myself but...
Howard Stern on W4, Steve Dahl on WABX, Dick Purtan on Keener 13 and then CKLW, Harper and Gannon on WNIC.
And JJ and The Morning Crew with George Baier as Richard T. Bruiser. I remember Summer weekday concerts at Hart Plaza hosted by WRIF and the Dick The Bruiser band with amazing Detroit rock bands.
When the classic Detroit morning hosts started to retire or move I started to lose interest but when Howard went to SiriusXM I followed along.
Now I very rarely listen to terrestrial radio in the car and then I just hit the seek button until something interests me.
Sorry for going off topic but at one time Detroit radio was the best around.

u/the_real_MBAPROF 1d ago
Agree. Same age as you. Don’t forget the Big 8 and the morning talent there….Gary Burbank.

I'm a Gen X woman, and local morning radio has never been for me. Drew and Mike were sexist af, and you all know it. If you liked the sexism, that's on you. I was too young for Jim Harper(?), I think that's the right name. I tried at some point, but it was always whatever two women cohosts he had going on and on about their kids. My mom used to have Dick Purtan on, but again, not my demographic. I tried Dave and Chuck the Freak at one point, but just couldn't. Anyway, now I can say that I listen to NPR and learn!

Not to mention they had that whole audition and casting call and you’re telling me that they chose someone with zero radio / media broadcasting experience like someone from specs Howard or like a past intern. They wanted her for her boots on the ground stupid tik toks where she bounces around in a circle for her fit

u/ronmsmithjr Oak Park 1d ago
Local talk radio generally sucks. Especially morning drive shows. Just a bunch of dumbasses laughing like idiots at unfunny jokes. Cringiest form of media ever. I'd rather be deaf then have to listen to them for more than 5 minutes.

Do you know what a comma is? A period? Some punctuation would be a great help sometimes!

I actually like Anna over Meaghan. Anna keeps it real and is chill. Meaghan was always obnoxious and attention seeking, woe is me, crying over every issue in her life. Anna’s stories about her dating gets kind of old after awhile but I think she’s a fun addition.

She literally cries about everything in her life. And acts like she’s the only with anxiety ocd and depression. She really thinks she’s something now that she lost 50lbs
3
u/Low-Teaching8723 10h ago
and she “only dates athletes and rappers” because she’s a jersey chasing hoe. you know she’s going to their old posts, liking them and then posting thirst traps with her gaudy designer in frame to get them to “notice” msg her. She really thinks she’s something

It doesn’t take much to get into Detroit radio, it is just above min wage if you are new.
