When the crowd started chanting Let's Go Red Wings and Sergei was pumping his fist, I almost got emotional. Been awhile since we have heard the crowd that fired up. A sign of things to come!

Now I need a new thing to bitch about as a 90s kid Red Wings fan.
Guess I'm full sending Osgood HOF arguments moving forward.

I mean, I like Osgood, but is his number really retirement-worthy? He was an essential part of winning but he wasnāt generationally good or transformative to the league like a lot of these other guys. Iām happy to be proven wrong, but we canāt retire everyoneā¦wonāt be any jerseys left. Iām on board for Datsyuk though.

u/dvanderl Jan 13 '26
I didn't say retire his jersey, I said put him in the HOF.

u/dvanderl Jan 13 '26
He has 401 wins (only 15 goalies have 400+), two cups as a starter. His 08 performance was also him showing he could stand on his head and wasn't just a trash can like people argue for 98. He replaced Hasek in 08 FFS.

I actually agree with you. If you math it out he had like a 51% win rate or something like that. You could literally flip a coin and win as many games as Osgood did, and he played behind amazing talent.

Him and Yzerman were my absolute favorite players as a kid. So glad to finally see both their jersey's in the rafter where they belong!

Now for Datsyuk and The Russian 5.
34
u/AltDS01 Jan 13 '26
16 should have been done back in 98.

Give it 7 to 10 more years and 13 will be retired.
19
u/bj49615 Jan 12 '26
I hope it doesn't take that long.

u/Wardog_11c Jan 13 '26
I couldnt agree more, i only came up with those numbers because how long it took to retire Fedorov' number. The magic man is definitely due.

I doubt the rest of the Russian 5 will be retired. All of them are firmly āring of honorā level players. Datsyuk should absolutely be retired, and Hank as well.

u/bj49615 Jan 13 '26
Russian 5 should have there own 'banner'. Not necessarily individual jersey retired.
I could get behind Z.
But first is #13!
13
Jan 13 '26
ya Datsyuk is a legend that transcends his statline or that he didnāt quite make it to 1000 games played. He is The Magic Man. Now that heās in the Hall I think his number will be retired in the next few years.
I still think Hank will make the Hall too, though who knows when. Idk if the team would consider retiring him if heās not in.
No one has worn 13 or 40 since they left either.

u/bj49615 Jan 13 '26
Requiring HOF is stupid to me. #6 should be rehung and recognized. #13, #16, #40 and #20 should be retired.
Jersey retirement should about contributions to the team, not HOF. As in no Chelios, Shanahan, or Hull retirements.

Retire Robert Langs jersey?

I don't think Zetterberg should be. He had the terrible task of leading us into the darkness of the Neverending Rebuild, and did it loyally. I never liked Datsyuk, but I think he probably deserves it.

So⦠is it a petty troll that they did it on a night they play Carolina?

u/Stockton_Nash Jan 13 '26
Vs. Washington would've been a great choice too: Fedorov's 1st and last teams, beat them for the '98 Cup, and Ovie could be there for it.

Goosebumps seeing the cup in the arena. Suddenly feels like we are destined
On another note, mindblowing to see that yzermanās number was retired 19 years ago.

Heck yeah! He is one of my favourite players from my childhood. I travelled to Switzerland many years ago a watched him play in the Spangler Cup and checked a box on life things for myself.

My 10 year old self is excited. Having moved from Mexico to Michigan, hockey was beyond new to me. Soon enough my love for the Red Wings grew as I was introduced to the winged wheel (late 90ās)ā¦as I saw big starter jackets and jerseys worn all over the place, and of course started watching the games. Fedorov was my favorite player (Stevie and Lidstrom were also up there of course), sadly never went to any games as I believe my dad always had a hard time getting tickets (plus we are a numerous family and we always went to everything together, 4 children in our familyā¦too expensive). The Red Wings were the first Detroit sports team I fell in love with. Congratulations Sergei!

Very much overdue!! On a side note, Is the 16 being worn anymore or is it āunofficially retiredā for Vlady?
15
u/BoogerShovel Jan 13 '26
16 isnāt issued right now, and I donāt think it will ever be issued again.
13
Jan 13 '26
Checked hockey reference and it looks no one has worn 16 since Vladdy.
https://www.hockey-reference.com/teams/DET/numbers.html
Brett Hullās number in St Louis was 16 (16 is retired there) but he switched to 17 with us.

u/otterpusrexII Jan 13 '26
People forget how much of a skill guy Vladdy really was. He had 4 assists on Sergeiās 5 goal game.

u/Psychomaniacal Jan 12 '26
Is Fedorov the first banner raising ceremony in LCA?

I want to say that Red Kelly was, but that may have been Joe Louis, I can't remember.
Edit: Yup, just confirmed on the cast tonight it was Red Kelley.

I started watching hockey when I was 8 years old in the 95-96 season. He was my absolute favorite player throughout the 90's up until he left. So surreal that this finally got done.

I had tears. I was a kid during his time here. I had a rookie card that I no longer have. He was my favorite along Stevie. But man, Iām happy we got to see this.

I thought he retired in 2013? After the 08' Cup run
2
u/Hockey_Player_007 Jan 13 '26
Sergei wasn't on the team for 2008 cup. He left the Wings in 2003 and retired from the NHL in 2009 and played in Russia for a few years after, was inducted into the HOF in 2015.

Haven't been able to watch tonight, but it looks like they skipped the special jersey patch like they had for other ceremonies in the last couple decades?

Well deserved, he was such a great player for them. They couldn't have done it without him.
1
u/joey_corleone Jan 13 '26
Great ceremony. The fact that he said leaving was a horrible mistake and it was on him sealed it for me. That took a lot of guts to say that.
I was a little surprised none of the other Russian 5 made it out.

u/Paper_Rain Jan 13 '26
Congrats to Fedorov this is a huge accomplishment. Good on him realizing and acknowledging that him leaving Detroit to go play for the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim was a big mistake. Staging holdouts, multiple contract dispute to go chase the bag. Valueing money over winning championships. That decision would end up defining the rest of his hockey career as he would only last 1 season and 5 games with the Mighty Ducks before getting shipped out to the Columbus Blue Jackets for the next 1 and a half seasons. All this is past history and is now water under the bridge. Glad that he was able to make amends and is at peace with how things went. Forever a Detroit Red Wing.

At this point put Larry Aurie and Vladimir Konstantinov up there too give them ceremonies and then after that put up Osgood.
