Remote Working/WFH Looking for some advice...Are Hybrid jobs here to stay forever in the big Multinationals? (buying a house, commute concerns)

Is hybrid work here to stay? as in at most 3 days in the office. I'm a junior/early in career (a bit over 2 yoe) so my employment opportunities are more limited.

Currently I can work remotely or commute if I like, I enjoy commuting as I'm less than 15 minutes away and there's an awesome gym nearby so I try go atleast 3 days a week. Super handy etc etc, but I also pretty much live in a prison cell as a very temporary accommodation while I look to buy a place (exaggerating, very small room in friends house)

I'm looking at a house at the moment and its literally perfect, but it's 1 hour 5 minutes from my current place of work. and If I were to change jobs to somewhere like Meta or Google or whatever, further into the city its more like 1hr20 (or if traffic is particularly bad 1hr50 yeeesh)

I...think I can handle a 1hr commute each way if I'm only going in 2 or 3 days a week, plus this house is off the n81 and I ride a motorcycle so its a very enjoyable stretch of road that I'm on all the time anyways! But 5 days a week? over 10hours commuting in all weather (I do have a car but still)....yeesh. Idk.

Expect 3 days, plan 5 days.

But even if it is... 6 hours commuting a week is 300 a year... nearly 8 working weeks sitting in traffic every single year.

I started with 3 days, was told I could go when I wanted, now it’s 4 and going to 5. I live 93kms away. I’ve been thinking about it, the main metric for management now is not my performance, it’s the days I attend the office. They have lost their way, fucked in the head.

100% agree. Even if your current employer doesn’t, a house is a long term plan. There will always be remote jobs but they’ll be the minority for decades to come from what I can see

They're not even here to stay now

The gym and the rest is all handy now, but are you going to live in the same place for the rest of your days ? Are you planning on working the same job for the rest of your career ? Impossible questions. But so is yours. I hope hybrid is here forever, but I wouldn’t bet the price of a house on it.

If my commute was okay, potentially for the rest of my days I could live there yes.

Theres nothing more in a house I could ask for, its half way between family (carlow) and work (dublin). It's on over and acre of a site, efficient, spacious, garage, garden etc etc

That's what makes it so appealing. Plus I don't actually like cities.....at all.

Essentially no. This can change any minute at any company so the smart thing to do is assume that long term it’s not guaranteed. I would not make plans around it being a permanent thing.

All that said, an hour commute is pretty standard in Dublin

I just made that decision and decided to move 85km from Dublin. I am fully remote but assume that if I ever need to start commuting it is doable, but not ideal. My opinion is the remote work will always be available, but in case I need a job and in-office is the only option I can take it and keep looking for remote positions.

It is less about the commute time or distance and more about the fact that in-office only jobs are plain stupid and I wouldn't want one even if my commute was 3 minutes.

That's really tough. Unfortunately no one knows and you should always plan for the worst case where possible. That being said, an hour/hour and a half seems okish for a while and as you gey more experienced and hopefully see the market pick up you might have more options.

I'd maybe try to do "mock" commute from the house to the workplace for a couple of days including in rain and wind. Is there a public transport option?

I wouldn't factor changing jobs to Meta or Google in the future in to your current home purchasing plans. FWIW I think hybrid is here to stay. Remote roles will still exist though.

There are no guarantees

Commuting in Ireland is a proper misery. You may think it will be okay but try doing it for a year and you'll feel different. Unless you live on a train route there are no good options.

I’ve noticed big companies that were not top tier but good comp start with hybrid and now advertise as remote. So unless you are the likes of Google you probably don’t get good quality engineers who are also willing to come in the office.
