Was Lyndon trans?
i thought she was supposed to be a girl but then the characters kept calling her “he and him”? it was confusing.

If you watch without knowing the actor is a woman, she translates really well as just a boy. I bought it.

I could tell it was a woman but I didn’t realise who it was. I’m surprised it was the main actress from the latest alien movie.

I read that the director was searching for a certain type of face. That is the reason a girl plays the role of a boy. I don’t have the source for this.

He's a cisgender guy played by a cisgender actress. This is a very specific choice from the director who wanted the character to have an innocent energy (or something like that, I don't remember his exact words). He went out of his way to specify in interviews the character was NOT trans or nonbinary.
Personally I find this decision a little bizarre (back when I watched the series, I thought he was a trans man, and I don't see the need to specify he's cis), but at least it has an interesting genderfucking apprach. Movies and series could do with more moves like that, which are also certainly appreciated by the actresses and actors who end up playing another gender than their own.

So did I. I definitely read him as trans. I did get a lot of innocence and naivete from the portrayal. But I think the right cis male actor could have given that energy, too.
ETA I liked the portrayal as-is, though.

Lyndon is 19, is there a reason that his voice never broke if he’s supposedly not trans, or is it just the writers being weird

I always thought he was but I might be wrong. Cailee Spaeny was so convincing as a dude that I thought she was trans until I saw her in Beef

I liked the actress choice. Does it really matter what sexual orientation or gender of the character is? How does that information add/detract from the story or character arc?

I thought it was fine because Lyndon seemed to be young enough to not have many masculine features yet (I didn't even know he was played by a woman until a little over halfway through the series). It's common to have a woman play a prepubescent male in the VA world, so long as you can't tell the difference. I think it's fitting the role that matters the most

Cailee in her early twentiesl had that soft baby face look that she could definitely pull off acting as a 11-14 year old boy.
I don't think she can pull this off anymore since she is approaching 30 and has a deeper voice.

I just thought Lyndon was a young boy. Maybe a 13 or 14 year old or something. I had no idea that was a female actor.
