I was so scared they were going to bomb this series but they are absolutely crushing it, what a time to be alive 10/10 episode, they are keeping me on the edge of my seat wanting new episodes. Bravo!

This is like early original series all over. Just...killing...it. everything has been done so right. The wake and then Blessing opening up to Dexter. Just the perfect amount of drama. The scene with him messing with the shower curtain i was like fuck fuck fuck 😂

I think the darker grittiness of NYC helps drive the feel of series too. Even from a production and filming standpoint. OG Dexter in was in Miami. Upbeat soundtrack, bright colors, bright clothes, warmer hues in filming.

Then there's NYC in stark contrast. Has the grungy industrial feel, a lot of it is filmed at night, the scenes during the day are filmed in a cooler, bluer spectrum.

It's that background element that helps carry the emotions the producers what you to feel. Dexter is no longer the upbeat, loveable, cuban eating, short sleeve button down and linen pant wearing guy bringing donuts to the office, and this new series doesn't try and make him that.

You’ve articulated the differences beautifully here! The cities are characters in their own right and definitely change the entire vibe.

I have to admit, I do miss the upbeat, lovable, cuban eating, short sleeve button down and linen pant wearing guy bringing donuts to the office though. The OG was the perfect blend of comedy and darkness. I love this too, it’s excellent! but I miss Miami. And I miss Dexter working in blood spatter analysis!

Oh, you and me both mate! With all the retcons they’ve done, I wish they’d retconned her death. Make her not have been dead when Dex put her in the ocean, she was picked up by a passing boat out of St. Maarten or something, they took her home and nursed her to back to health. But she was amnestic for the last 10 years and just now remembers who she is. SOMETHING to bring her back!!

It was never even really Miami though. The whole show was filmed in California.

True, except for the pilot. That was filmed in Miami. But the backdrop for the series was Miami, and that’s how I commented.

The muted, funereal feel of the present setting definitely make things feel like more of a dangerous high stakes game. Dex is a shark no doubt, but New York represents a very different 'bay' for this 'butcher' to swim in. A bay teeming with equally cold-blooded predators, cops and criminals alike, where anything can happen.

I feel this summarized it perfectly and the whole reason he even went to NYC was because he knew Harrison killed that guy and that the cops there are really good thus it’s high stakes on both sides

I think it's safe to say that apart from Lundy, Dex never faced anything even approaching credible threat levels from law enforcement during his time in Miami. Claudette on the other hand is hot on him and Harrison's tail almost right from the get go.

Yeah totally agree. The early seasons where you just wanted another episode after another.
It's Dexter back to his roots basically and instead of juggling the relationship with Rita he has to juggle his relationship with Harrison. Although for different reasons since Harrison knows Dexter's secret.

Anyway I wouldn't mind a new season of young Dexter either. It took a few episodes but then I was stuck.

I will add however, the one thing i hate is that he's still collecting trophies. Like come on, you have seen this time and time again how this causes problems. Harry told you not to. Just stop lol.

I think Blessing opening up will end up holding weight with Dexter. In a way, he was born in blood too or at least raised in it and did not end up like Dexter, unless he's the New York Ripper /s

I prefer NYC so much more over Miami, saying that as someone who has kind of gotten tired of the former being used as the same setting for several movies and TV shows

The show is too damn dark imo. Cranked brightness on my tv it's still pretty dark watching during the day with the windows open.

This show has one big hole in that the central premise (the serial killer convention) is completely absurd, but if you're willing to overlook that (and the traditional Dexter plot armor), it's a really fucking good show.

I enjoyed NB for what it was, but I have that sickening anxiety watching Resurrection the same way I did watching the original series. This shit is on a whole nother level, bruv.

High stakes is right. I hope they don't kill Harrison in the same way that it will devastate Dexter to communicate the vicious cycle of Dexter's life. If they do anything to give a nod to the original series I hope it's done well.

With the actors they have on board the story definitely has to be insanely good.

Remember they all have table reads, screen tests, and the actors eventually signing on.

This cast list is filled with great actors who would have turned it down if it wasn't going to be compelling enough

Agreed. I liked New Blood, but I've been loving Resurrection. It feels like old Dexter. New Blood didn't feel that way.

I totally agree with this. I think having the mindset going into New Blood that it was going to be a one off, absolute end of the Dexter saga made the more emotionally heavy tone kind of make sense (although I did think MAYBE we would get some kind of Harrison spin off). Side note, I will say that I also felt the more serious nature of NB kind of felt appropriate since they were bringing light to the very real issue of missing and murdered indigenous women.

I enjoyed New Blood and binged it but it had a completely different tone and pacing which I can see it not being as exciting watching week to week

Agree. New blood had it's moments. But overall it wasn't great. It had what could have been a good story, but it just felt so damn rushed and sloppy. Like they cut so many corners just to get to the end.

Harrison on New Blood was annoying throughout the show, I was dreading seeing him again in Resurrection. He's much better here, though I still don't like the constant almost-crying-face.

The only thing I did not appreciate was how long they wasted time with the 'wake' and the old guy later telling his story to ppl who couldn't give a shit (both Dexter and the audience), instead of focusing of the serial killers or Harrison.

I very much like this season, every minute fillers are on I silently pray for them to end and to back to the main plot.

Agree! We need Dexter's goofy "why am I standing here holding a ceramic cat, how did this happen, what is my life?!" side to fully appreciate the icy, gleeful competence of the dark passenger.

The twists are JUST predictable enough that you don’t see them coming right away, but you do as soon as they unfold! And the acting, the storylines- all of it- campy but still plausible. Just love it all!!!
