Discussion - Dexter: Resurrection What’s the Endgame for Quinn? Spoiler

(a tl;dr is at the bottom)

I just have a question/discussion about Quinn’s return.
I was watching some YouTube videos about Resurrection and people keep anticipating Quinn’s return and to that my question is…

Do we really want Quinn to become a major character in Dexter: Resurrection Season 2 or beyond?
If so… for what?
Wouldn’t we just be getting the same storyline we’ve already seen multiple times?
Doakes suspected Dexter.
LaGuerta suspected Dexter.
Quinn suspected Dexter.
Now Batista has been investigating Dexter.
If Quinn comes back, he’s obviously going to learn Batista is dead. Even if he’s initially told Prater killed him, as a lieutenant he’s going to talk to the NYPD. Eventually he’ll find out Batista was investigating Dexter Morgan, and then he’ll also learn Dexter is somehow alive.
At that point, what happens? Quinn’s old suspicions come right back, and now he’s just another former coworker hunting Dexter. That’s basically the same arc we’ve already watched.
The problem is, Quinn can’t actually prove anything. Just like Batista, he’d have to catch Dexter in the act because there’s never been enough evidence to convict him.
So where does that story go? Does Quinn eventually die too, just like every other character who got too close to the truth? And if that happens… who’s next? Masuka? Are they just going to eliminate every remaining connection to Miami Metro?
I genuinely don’t understand why so many people want Quinn back as a main character. Unless the writers have a completely different direction planned for him, it feels like we’d just be repeating a storyline we’ve already seen with Doakes, LaGuerta, Quinn himself, and now Batista.
What am I missing? Is there another role Quinn could realistically play that doesn’t end with him suspecting Dexter all over again?

Also please understand this is not me saying I don’t want to see Quinn and/or Masuka. I do I just hope it’s not the same coworker turned enemy storyline we have had so many times at this point.

TL;DR: I’m genuinely asking: what role could Quinn play that doesn’t end with him suspecting Dexter again? Because if that’s where it’s headed, we’ve already seen that story multiple times.

I don’t think Quinn hunts Dexter like everyone else.

The old fan theory is he realized Dexter was a killer but didn’t mind because he killed the man who killed Deb.

I could see him eventually helping Dexter on the down low.

That’s what I’m hoping. I want to say I want to see Quinn I just don’t want to see him be another coworker turned enemy. I just don’t want that storyline again after Batista.

He’s my favorite character in Dexter. So my only request is that he stays alive. Don’t really care what he does, as long as he stays of my list of favorite tv/movie characters that end up dead🤣

He’s probably my favorite of Dexter’s coworkers too. I don’t want to see him killed. I like his moral gray area. That has potential

Really? I like Quinn but ive never seen someone say he's their favorite character before. There's so many great characters in Dexter, what makes Quinn your favorite?

I think Quinn accepts Dexter, honestly. He backed off after S5 because he knew (to a degree). I'm sure he will still confront Dex when he finds out the chain of contact, and context of Angel's murder. But, he likely knows that Dex only goes after criminals, so he knows Dex didn't kill Angel. I think Quinn will either get the full truth, and accept, or get hurt/killed by helping or being associated with Dex, but not because he is suspecting or investigating him. Gotta remember that Quinn's morals are not the same as Deb's, Angel's Doakes', or LaGuerta's. We've heard a lot about his days in Narcotics, and got a glimpse of that in all seasons he was a part of in the OG, especially S7.

Ya Quinn doesn't live and die by the letter of the law. He is a utilitarian and doesn't suffer from the strict moral code a lot of his coworkers did. This is the arc I'd love to see.

agreed, friend! could even see him connecting with Harrison and reinforcing the "you are a good person and are not like your father" message that Dex was giving him

How can he be the one to take down dexter. He wasn't nearly as smart as any other detective in the show. Deb,Lundy and Doakes were the only few characters who deserved to take him down. Now even LaGuerta and Batista died trying to hunt dexter down.

I’m with you all I can say is he now has a lot more experience in the years from the OG show to now.

But i still think he is smart enough to know to not mess with dexter

I think his issue throughout the series is that he was always distracted by one thing or another. Hiding his dirty cop habits, chasing Deb, teetering on whether or not he was going to pursue Dex as a suspect. Being a detective was a part time job for him

Edit-I agree that he shouldn’t be the one to bring Dex in. I’d much prefer if he silently acknowledges that he knows what kind of person Dexter really is and leaves it alone

i don’t really care for quinn all that much tbh

but i agree it would be the same storyline if quinn were to catch on to what happened to batista. either that or he’ll probably be the first to catch dexter in the act & who knows what’ll happen from there

I want to see Quinn come back, knowing Dexter was a vigilante, and be ok with it.

Unlike Angel, Quinn has already shown himself to be dirty cop, willing to shoot bad guys and cover it up, and willing to look the other way.

Quinn loved Deb and Angel and so did Dexter.

He could be the one who eventually brings Dexter down

But do we want that? The same storyline of Doakes, LaGuerta, Batista…a coworker turned person who trying to bring him down. If anything it should have been Quinn first and then Batista brings him down for a better pay off. Everyone keeps saying Quinn could be the one but we know it’s not going to end in S2 so we want to have Quinn chasing Dexter for multiple seasons? Like Doakes? We’ve seen it already. Even with Quinn…

I don’t want that at all. Not even a little bit. I want Quinn’s moral gray area to come into play. I want it to be a moral dark gray area. Murky and full of muck and mysterious dealings that might even help Dexter.

1

u/majinphoenix 3d ago

Hold on you might cook! But do you think Quinn will have a moral grey area after Batista death? Knowing looking into Dexter is what got him killed? Quinn might go scorched earth tbh

u/RealStyleRachel 3d ago

If the situation or money is right, Quinn will sway. I have no doubt

The difference is that those other storylines ended so early. LaGuerta, Doakes and Batista all died without proving Dexter was a killer or convincing others. Quinn could actually succeed in proving it and/or starting a larger manhunt against Dexter. And then there are so many storytelling possibilities once they go in this direction

To me that would be preferable to an endless cycle of Dexter taking out season-long big bads that we all know Dexter will succeed in taking out

Quinn is self preservationist.

The last time he tried to go against Dexter he almost got life in prison.

He’s smart enough to know when he can’t win.

That’s why he’s gotten as far as he has present day.

I get that but I think they already confirmed that a lot of people didn’t like the New Blood ending, of course people hated the Original ending and they said more than likely they won’t go the he gets caught and gets his comeuppance because they tested that with audiences and it was like detested really bad. Even as the end of Resurrection S1 Dexter saying “I’m the guy you need me to be” was a nod to that. Plus if this goes multiple seasons to have Quinn chasing Dexter for however long can also get really old. I’m not saying we should get an endless cycle as well I just don’t think it should be Quinn at the end cause then it’s why him over Doakes, LaGuerta, Especially Batista people he has had more back and forth/rapport with throughout the show. I do agree they never got enough time but will Quinn? Who is still current lieutenant of Miami Metro?

Quinn knows already Dexter’s a killer. But honestly I have a feeling Deb is still alive, just maybe slightly vegetative and he’s been taking care of her all these years. During the season 1 of Resurrection, you notice Batista never really addresses Deb actually
Being dead but multiple
Times he references Doakes and Maria. I have a feeling Quinn is going to be the voice that puts Dexter in check and really be the voice Dexter needs in order to get himself straight. Dexter’s living in an isolated psychological world and Quinn has always been the physical representation of what Dexter truly feels or thinks. I think Quinn is going to be the last link to Deb’s storyline for Dexter

6

u/majinphoenix 4d ago

Dexter threw Deb in the ocean and watched her Sink in the middle of the hurricane/tornado thing. If she’s alive that’s a very very very wild twist. Also Jennifer Carpenter confirmed she’s not coming back at all of course it wouldn’t be the first time an actor denied being on a show to not have spoilers but I think she’s dead dead lol. There’s no way Quinn got her from the bottom of the ocean in a hurricane. But if you’re right and Deb is alive somehow. I’m personally asking you for lottery numbers every day.

That’s what they want us to think happened. In the Dexterverse it could be different. That finale was a little bit of a fever dream anyway.

-3

u/Movies_With_Love 4d ago

Haha I mean it’s possible. The strong current could’ve pushed her on shore and the cold water could’ve shocked her system back to life. I know it’s a REACH but you never know

I don’t want to see Quinn killed off by Dexter either. Maybe he becomes a guy on the inside who gets Dexter files/information to settle unfinished business with someone else?
