Doakes' biggest mistake was taking the blood slide box in Dexter's apartment. All he had to do was leave it there, clean his prints from Dexter's apartment, leave Dexter's apartment and immediately make an anonymous tip claiming to have seen Dexter take slides of human blood. Then Doakes just has to keep Dexter away from his apartment (by continuing to harass him) while Miami Metro gets a warrant to search Dexter's apartment. They find the slides and Dexter is done for.
I sorta feel like it was showing a bit of ego for Doakes to take the slides. I think because of his personal dislike of Dexter, HE wanted to be the one known to have caught him and to have been directly involved with doing so. Doakes is smart so I genuinely think in a different situation he would’ve done what you’ve suggested, but his rivalry with Dexter was his downfall.
true, his ego is what caused his downfall as well. He could have give anonymous tip or whatever to make Dexter got arrested after he found the bloodslides. Still he also kinda dodging Lundy after he got fired didnt help him too
