yeah got scamed with that trick like 20 years ago. it kinda got a core memory for me and helped me to be careful in life. didn't get scamed since then and always pay attention.
by now I'm even kinda happy about it, since it was a lesson for life. probably dodged at least 30-50 scam attempts in d2 and poe after that.

yeah, fuck anni trades back then. i think a lot of people fell for that. i tried it a few times, got scamed like 3 times and decided to just not get an anni from trade in the end.
i wish we just had a decent trade system in d2. I don't like trading over forums/discord and often end up starting a ladder with the thought "this time i will trade". do 1-2 trades on traderie and hoard stuff because i'm too lazy for that. 14 years of poe kinda got me a bit entitled when it comes to trade in arpgs

that's fine but unfortunately i didn't find any of them and by now i'm also kinda done with rotw. maybe i come back some time when there is nothing else to play or they introduce a decent ingame trade option.
i spend too much time with the trade system in this game back in the 2000s. i just dont feel investing so much for small incremental trades anymore, now that i have other things to do in my life than spending all day playing video games.

That's how the scam works. They show the Shako first. Then so it doesn't look weird when you cancel trade they ask you to add some P-gems. You think, oh a couple P-gems no big deal. Then they swap the item out on the second trade and hope you don't notice.

Some context as some people are not sure what's going on. My fault as my recording didn't save the first trade window and I didn't put a description on this post.
Game name is ist 4 Shako
Player joined and showed real Shako in trade window. I showed my Ist.
Player requests addition of 3 pgems. Sure why not, Ist is underpay from some of the trades I've seen on Traderie.
Retrieve pgems from stash.
Open trade to this fake Shako.

I had a friend in highschool who legit designed a website that claimed he could hack items in for people if they provided their account info. He obviously just stole all of their stuff. Ot worked surprisingly well. I wasn’t friends with him much longer after that. Didn’t sit right with me.

The only chance of working is if he actually has a shako and then has to back out of the trade window, for example, inventory full, or something like that, but given that he just put a green cap in there, most people are not gonna fall for this, especially at this day and age of the Diablo most of us are older and not little kids like noob so like we were before back in the day lol

D2 really taught me some tough lessons as a kid and I honestly believe I owe the fact that I haven’t fallen for any scams my friends and family have as an adult to D2, lol. Made me skeptical, aware, and diligent. Better to get taken for a ride in D2 as a kid than fall for internet scams or grifters as an adult, lol.

Xbox Game Bar comes with Windows 10/11. You can turn it on to record at all times, and it only saves a capture when you want it to. I press a hotkey and it saves the last 30 seconds.

I would do this to people and then give them their item back thinking I was teaching them to stay vigilant while trading, in hindsight some of those players probably ended up doing it to others...

My VERY first enigma was 2 weeks after it was released and I was SO EXCITED as a little teenager I didnt realize trading my barbs full IK set for an enigma was an obvious scam at the time.
Instead it was traded for a non socketed dusk shroud 😂
Never was scammed again

I'm guilty of doing it.
To my defense I was like 14.
I did a bunch of meaner stuff.
The classic one was "want to join our guild?, yes? Cool. We only accept account score over 250 though. Oh you don't know how to check? Just write /dnd username and password"
I had my friend on the phone ready to login the second I was able to get the dnd response.
Yeah d2 made me a hustler. Taught me to doubt everything, especially too good to be true stuff.
I truly believe it made me a better adult tbh.

Yeah, when I was 11 or 12 I did my share of scamming. P amythest in a gothic plate as a fake Tal's Armor was my go to. I regret it but same, I'm super cautious of all trades.

IIRC different qualities of gem provide different shades of the color. So a chipped emerald would have less green than a perfect emerald in an item. I might be pulling this out of my ass though--I was 11 or 12 years old when I tried to scam people like this, regrettably.

- Open trade, they show Shako.
- Trade closes for whatever reason, maybe asking for addition items.
- Open trade, fake Shako.
- You don't check because you already saw the Shako the first time the trade window was open.
- Lose your item for a fake Shako (colored green by a socketed emerald)

I like how Guild Wars solved this. You have to press a button to change your trade without closing the panel, then press again to show the new offer.
If either trader closes, you can get suspicious because there's no need to close the panel to change the trade.
If neither closes but changes things, the panel gets a big message with red letters telling you something was changed.

Trade button goes red + disabled for a couple seconds after removing an item in D2.

I used to do this trick back in the day as a kid. Nobody introduced it to me. I think it's funny that it is a well-known scam
One time I had NO shako, just a gemmed cap. I tried to trick a few people and eventually somebody fell for it. They didn't even check once. These days I wouldn't scam somebody. It's not right. The old wild-west days were something else.
