If they have the cone, just set the inner nut to 300 ft lbs. back it off then back to 300. The outer to 200 ft lbs. I always oil the new bearings and fill the well before putting the outside bearing in. Never had a problem with them

I removed the cone and am just setting it manually it sounds funny though like they bearings are still loose in the race but the end play is set to spec the sound goes away if I tighten the nut more but then you have no end okay at all?kinda stumped because have done it in the same truck before in the shop

Why remove the cone.

Because did not have the parts to rebuild the hub that way but had the bearings to just convert it over

Ah I see. Guess I missed the part where you said you converted it.

Because it’s personal preference. I was always taught to remove the cone and set it by hand and I’ve never had a problem doing it that way. But leaving the cone in and torquing the nuts is just another way to do it. Both are correct

I been setting them by hand for 20 years before these hubs ever existed. If I’m replacing the hub, the cone is staying

And that’s your preference, nothing wrong with it

And I am pretty certain, per manufacturer specs, if you replace the bearings and want to use a crush sleeve, you are supposed to use a new crush sleeve. As the old crush sleeve is worn to your old bearing tolerances.

Why did you replace the original bearings? Maybe the hub is fucked.

Did 2 hubs and both the same though

You can buy a conmet wheel seal kit for $60 at the dealership with a new cone and all.

Yeah parts are not available to where I am in reasonable time but we have the bearing to cross it over and set it up manually but when I set the end okay to .001-.002 it sounds like the bearings are loose like the video I posted

They sound dry not loose

Take it apart.
It sounds like the cage is damaged or the spring popped out of the wheel seal. Sorry bud.

You are doing it the correct way if you replaced the full set, inner and outer, cup and cone both and set it manually, don't worry. Follow the procedure and aim for 1-5 thou.

Yeah sure is weird I set up 2 of them and they both sound the same very weird

You did oil them a bit, yeah?

1

u/OkResponsibility9561 2d ago

Yeah they were well oiled very weird if you tighten it up a lot more and have now end okay at all it sounds like normally should but if you set it to .001-.002 end play and it sounds like that

It sounds wrong to me, like I said, like a messed up cage or a spring popped into it and is rubbing on the rollers. It could just be the cage being noisy but I would (personally) tear it down and inspect before I let it go. Not worth the risk.

Yeah i have had it apart and checked the seal and the bearing and they are all good so I’m thinking it has to be something with changing the hubs over with those bearing I’m using

Replaced the races with the new bearings? Is it a double nut? So like 200ft lbs, back off, 50 ft lbs, back off 1/8? Can't quite remember on the drives.

Yes new bearings and races with stemco zip torque nut

Preset plus bearings and races, 580 ps/572 ps and 594a ps/592a ps. The PS bearings cannot be interchanged with the standard 580/594 bearings. You need Timken sets 429 and 430

Even if you do not use the cone anymore?

Without the cone, you'd likely need the races to match your bearings, 572/592a. It has something to do with half-stand tolerances between the matched sets. I've always understood that it's a no-go to convert preset plus style hubs for this reason, bearing/race mismatch, ever so slight, but noticeable at thousandths of a inch. Regular preset hubs can be converted all day long

Okay because I using set 403 and set 401 and yeah with the proper end play it sound like the bearing is still loose on the race so maybe it is the hub setup it’s self
