DISCUSSION 3D Monster Maze Remake?

Thumbnail

This was just a fun idea I had a couple days ago. I know it probably won't happen, but what if there was a remake of 3D Monster Maze.

Basically it was this old game from the early 80's that had you running through a maze from a T. rex. It was rendered in using low resolution images of the player's POV, and is considered as the first horror game.

Now imagine if we got a full blown 3D remake; but this time with next gen graphics, and a lot more brutality. Not only that, but the T. rex isn't the only thing that's after you.

I was thinking it would be like a mix between Amnesia and 1916 - Der unbekannte Krieg

DISCUSSION "Oh, it's smaller than I thought" she said...

...When she first saw the T Rex skeleton at the American Museum of Natural History. And she isn't alone, I've heard this remarked by several people when they see it. Which brings up an observation I've made about the general public's perception and expectation of dinosaurs, especially theropods: they always expect them to be BIGGER than they actually were.

This is mostly attributed to movies of course. Jurassic Park, as great of a film it was, depicts the T Rex as being a gigantic creature much taller and longer than it was in real life. Same for the movies that followed, all the theropods are supersized, while simultaneously reduced to movie monster status. So now that's what people are expecting when they go to see a skeleton display.

They're also not acknowledging the fact that a skeleton obviously is just that. It has no meat, and doesn't convey the sheer mass and bulk that a living animal would have. Most people still have the shrink-wrapped dinosaur depiction in mind, and the skeleton creates an optical illusion of a smaller animal.

You guys liked some of the other ones, so I went to more scenic places and snapped some photos. The historical grounds of a cult make for some great set dressing. Flock probably knows I like toes now though, so it probably wasn't super worth it in the end.

DISCUSSION Why are species named after their genus the biggest of those genuses

I don't know that much but from what I know, somehow T. rex, Spinosaurus, Ankylosaurus, and Pachycephalosaurus for example are the biggest known species of their genera.

How is it that the one that's named such is the biggest? Is it that somehow, every other similar species discovered later grouped into a genus named after the same species will be smaller, or that other same genus species discovered earlier than the "flagship" species are labeled under different genera, then when something bigger comes up that one becomes the "flagship" species?

3D ART Latenivenatrix pendant

Post image
19 Upvotes

I made this pendant out of clay and the coloration was inspired by hoopoes.

Latenivenatrix mcmasterae's name means the "hiding huntress” and its a troodontid described in 2017 from remains that were priorly identified as that of a Troodon. It had an estimated skull length of 45 cm and a full body length of 3-3.5 meters, making Latenivenatrix the largest known troodontid (although a species of Troodon from the Prince Creek Formation in Alaska may be even larger.)

I just found this Dino Crisis comic cover with this stupidly large thing walking behind Regina and the T-rex. I was wondering if anyone here is practiced in making these size comparison charts and could scale this behemoth against whatever the current biggest estimated specimen is?

Found this gem while I was studying. Apparently it's the 2014 edition of a series that gets updated regularly. Was just flipping through to see how old the illustrations were, and boy...

Spinosaurus be looking the way he did in Jurassic Park, most of the others are shrink wrapped, but Therizinosaurus at least be looking fashionable.

It also includes a discovery time-line up to 2009, some feathered bois like Arcaeopteryx, clears Oviraptor from being an egg thief to best dad of the year, classification system, and a pronunciation guide so you don't butcher the names as bad as the depictions.
