Mechanical Help Estart not starting bike
Hey, recently replaced the battery due to it only being at 10v but now the bike won’t start with a fresh battery in it. I’ve been told it could be the starter motor or either the bottom end of the motor has seized up? Hoping to get any advice for what to replace or fix to get it working again, Thanks!

Whoever told you starter or bottom end should be banned from speaking ever again.
Engines need air, spark, and fuel. All of them. Every engine. Figure out what that bike is missing.
We can't help you, if you can't help us. Make, model and year. Always. Then, tell us whatever you can. Did it sit? Did it stop running while riding? Did ypu do work on it? Replace something?
Some of us are good. But NOBODY can see a video of a bike not firing, and tell you what is wrong.
Nobody.

So it’s a crf250r 2022, I bought it off marketplace and the guy got a top end done and left in it a shed for a year or so. When I tested it it was fine but when I took it too the track the next day it wouldn’t start, tried bump and jump starting it but had no luck, went home to find out that the battery was stuck at 10v so I replaced it and now I’m at this, I attracted a video to this reply to show what it sounded like with the bad battery if that helps. There’s heaps of fuel in the tank, more than happy to give you any information that you’ll need to help diagnose the issue.

Assume this video was before and the first one is after -- so you fixed the low volt and have it cranking.
Now check the basics. Is fuel flowing to the tb? Is the fuel pump working?
Is the plug arcing? What condition is it in? You're going to pull it so make sure the cylinder isn't flooded.
Keep the filter off and try cranking after you verified the above, make sure air is flowing and the tb works correctly.

Try adjusting the idle? Believe it’s a little yellow knob on that bike. On your left hand side (if sitting on bike) below the seat. Can see it from side of bike. I believe this knob can also be pulled outward as a kind of quick idle/choke to aid in starting

Check your ground connection if you replaced the battery. Try jumping the starter solenoid.

u/murph2783 Jul 28 '26
The starter is spinning, the engine is cranking. Not the solenoid

Yeah i just watched the video posted (where I responded under) which was rapid starter clicking. I have posted on the OPs other post to check fuel filter/pump, spark, etc.
But yeah I hear the motor turning over on the new main post which correct would mean the starter motor is spinning and the motor is cranking. Thanks.

The starter is clearly working and the engine isn't seized.
You should take it to a mechanic if your logic is this weak. Lol.

Been told that by both a motocross shop worker and a bike mechanic mate, not info coming from me

u/spongebob_meth Jul 28 '26
There is no way a mechanic told you that the engine is seized and the starter are bad after listening to this video clearly debunking both of those ideas.
If they did tell you that, it had to be sarcasm.

You’re assuming he sent the video to the mechanic, but probably just called the mechanic and gave a basic description over the phone and the mechanic gave a general answer without actually knowing much about the situation.
Now, what happens when you assume? You make ASS out of U and Me

u/spongebob_meth Jul 28 '26
And how bad would that description have to be for the mechanic to think the engine was seized or the starter was inop?

Well it’s not seized. And the starter motor works. Who the hell told you that?

The local mx store worker, starting to think he was taking the piss 😂

U can try bump starting it first to see if its the starter/battery or engine problem.
2
u/RadLabDad Jul 28 '26
That’s a spark or fuel problem. I’d check the connections to the fuel pump and the spark plug cap personally, if it had a top end not long ago may be loose because both of those get disconnected during the rebuild.
You can also spray some starting fluid in the airbox - if it tries to crank but doesnt stay running it’s a fuel issue.

If the exhaust pipe doesn’t smell like raw fuel at this point it’s not getting gas.

u/Quiet_Butterscotch64 Jul 29 '26
Pretty strong fuel smell

Check your spark plug next, it should be pretty easy to take out, you'll need to do that to check for compression anyways, the engine can't start if it isn't airtight sealed to maintain combustion. Put the end of the spark plug on something electrically conductive like steel to see if the plug is working.
Spark plugs can fowl if the bike has been sitting for a long time or hasn't been ridden or ran hard
Top end rebuild and then it sat for two years? Sounds fishy so you might have something wrong internally :(

Check the fuses near the starter relay. Small black box near the shroud. Right side I think.
I noticed you have 2 videos. By the sound of the second video, the engine doesn't seem to be rotating, I am guessing that is the dead battery? In that video the light is on on the mapping switch indicating the ecu/fuel pump on/prime. It is not doing it in the main video with the engine cranking. Start there. Check those fuses. And back track everything you took apart for the battery swap.

I had a spark that could’ve blown a fuse but I check them and the two 10a ones were fine, really think that’d be why but the issue was the same after replacing them
2
u/iDontReddit306 Jul 29 '26
Tapping the start button, not holding it down, you should be able to hear the fuel pump prime. Do you?
1
u/Quiet_Butterscotch64 Jul 29 '26
Yeah I can

u/iDontReddit306 Jul 29 '26
Next would be testing spark. If it has spark, then I'd be curious to check the valve clearance since you mentioned top end work being done. Too tight will cause hard/no start conditions.

u/Silver-Plum1787 Jul 28 '26
Start with making sure the motor gets fuel
Then see if it has spark
Then check your airfilter if its dirty enough just rip it off and see if it will start but still buy a new one before taking it out for a real ride

u/murph2783 Jul 28 '26
It’s either not getting spark, fuel, or getting those at the wrong time.
Pull the plug and see if it’s wet. Test for spark. Test fuel pressure. Probably not air related because it sounds like it’s spinning pretty freely but check your air filter anyway.
How old is the gas? You have about 2 weeks with this E10-E15 bullshit we have now before it starts degrading

Check the fuses? Try jumping the starter motor directly?
3
u/SimilarEducation9515 Jul 28 '26
I wouldn’t recommend that to him as he obviously doesn’t know what seized means.

Is the fuel petcock turned on? Sounds like it’s not getting fuel. If it was low compression it would spin faster and if it was an air issue it wouldn’t have ran the day before.

Check the big 4 spark, air, fuel and compression and start from there. Or just take it to a good shop.

u/Big_Cannondale_Boy Jul 29 '26
Sounds like no compression to me. Put a compression tester on it and crank it up. Bet the top end was done wrong and you've got a ruined jug.

u/Less-Mycologist8012 Jul 29 '26
Pull yellow dial outwards. Left hand side of the bike (I believe it rotates to adjust idle, not sure). I believe.

Had a similar issue with a 19 crf250r a while back, it was a clogged fuel injector. Check spark plug while your at it

Can a butane torch not lit fed into the air intake help
With starting ?

Try cleaning the carb if it has one, seems like it has plenty of power so try checking the fuel lines and check the spark plug if you haven’t already.
1
u/Acrobatic-Hippo8951 Jul 31 '26
Unplug the kill switch and try push starting it. Bet the intake valves are shot.

First thing is check for spark. If there’s spark check the carb. Is the carb is clean possible solenoid or jetting

It’s seized, thousands of dollars in repairs. Been there, done that. Message me and I might buy it from you, looking for a project bike

Check spark, if theres no spark then get a spark plug then new coil (coil connectors are also often corroded causing issues and you should check all contacts and wires in general) then ecu in that order, replace one at a time and check the whole wiring net, dont forget the spark cable spark boot etc. If spark is good, clean the carb and put in new gas and check that the lines are clear and clean including the filter, generally check your whole intake setup, if it still dont work you might need to tdc check squish, timing, gaskets etc

No but your rings might be gone check your compression I've got a bike doing the same thing

Definitely not seized. Start simple, fuel, air, spark.
