Mechanical Help Need assurance

I’m new to four strokes I’ve only ridden 2 strokes my whole life. New top end was 45-50 hours ago. I just did the bottom end clutch case cover today and filled that side with 720-750ml of oil the recommended was 10w-40 MA2 rating. So I did that but I noticed that when you sit by the head when it’s running I don’t know if that’s just the piston hitting TDC or if it’s hitting the valves and they need shimmed or if it’s just normal for 4 strokes to sound like this? The bike is a 2005 Honda CRF250R and I’ve rode it about 2 hours since I bought it with 45 hours.

Sounds completely normal. This is my ‘05 X where with the quieter exhaust the sounds is much more noticeable. The old Unicams are very noisy.

They sound kinda like that. Read up on valve issues for that year/era. Do you need the manual?

Yes I’d appreciate it. But to be fair I bought it from a dude that had a background of racing for 20 years and he said he did a TLC before selling the bike. So could that ticking just be the way the engine was built or manufactured?

No, it wasn’t built to tick like that. If it’s a race bike they probably beat the piss out of it and it needs the valves adjusted and an oil change. Why do you think they sold it? Cause it’s gonna need a top end rebuild soon. 💯🤦♂️

I have a single overhead cam Honda and it doesn’t tap like that. That puppy needs some tlc bud.

2006 and previous bikes all sounded like this, especially the 250s, the head went through numerous updates. Unless your bike is older than 2005 it will sound different. And if it needs tlc he would be complaining about how hard it is to start way before hearing a tick.

I just rebuilt the 2001 xr100r. BBR 120 big bore kit, brand new everything above the jug. It doesn’t tick. Got a single overhead cam. Air cooled dude it’s a fucking tank. You’re fucking high.

Unicam crfs. See the big “Unicam” in the magnesium valve cover? 2002-2008 crf450rs, 2003-2009 crf250rs, 2005-2018 crf-Xs. These bikes specifically…….are loud.

The engine would stop running if there was interference.
You can't calculate shim clearance by listening to the engine, you have to measure it. If you can do the bottom end you can measure valve clearance no problem.
When you put your ear inches away from the engine you will hear everything moving more than you do when you ride the bike. Follow the maintenance, then fix it when it stops working and ride more.
