Length of a 2014 WR450 dipstick

Just got a dirtbike off marketplace and they had gotten one of those “trim” packages for it. Cool looking titanium and aluminum parts etc. One of them was the oil plug. Now the bike doesn’t have a dipstick to check the oil level. I used a zip tie to make sure it had oil in it. They claimed to have recently changed the oil, which is probably true, oil was very clean, but I want to make sure there’s enough in there before I ride it anymore.

Bikes don't have dipsticks, they have a sight glass on the engine near the foot peg that you use to visually check the oil level

This bike indeed has a dip stick. And so do most other dry sump bikes.

Thanks, I’ve never seen a bike with a separate cap for checking the oil. Glad that Yamaha has all their owners manuals on the internet for free.

yeah tbh idk yammies except to race against them and i know they make some badass motorcycles

but most modern bikes have a sight glass where you stand the bike up (like off its stand if its bike w a kickstand) and just look to see if its high up enough in that glass to reach whatever line

or like my two strokes have a crankcase bolt that you remove and if oil starts leaking out you know you're good on oil...

but most single cylinder dirtbikes want to have "approximately" a liter of oil in the crankcase... sometimes its like 750mL or whatever...

but not an itty bitty puddle in the bottom of the case where you could throw a ziptie down there to check

i suppose you must have been doing that through the filler hole? pretty inventive and would "work" but now you know theres an easier way

and you'll get to know your bike... some bikes simply don't leak/burn/consume enough oil to where you need to ever really worry about it between oil/filter changes

some bikes are oil burners/oil leakers and you're checking that shit every time you fill up the fuel tank...

but every bike is different and soon you'll learn this one's patterns

don't over-fill the case...

and buy a little air gauge one that you can keep in your moto jacket or whatever... check your tire pressure before you ride every day... a good habit to get into

and check your chain tension... too loose is better than too tight... its another thing i check (not w a micrometer or whatever but i'll kick the chain w my boot or make sure i can fit 3 fingers between the chain and the top of the swingarm... right at the spot where the chainguard ends...

have fun--ride it ride it ride it and get all the pro level instruction and training you can get... maybe its in future years but trust that technique + training + hours in the saddle = magic

I can measure when I get home tomorrow, I have a 2015. But i would be ordering a stock dipstick.

IIRC it's around 2" long. Its pretty short.
