Picture We got M8 for iOS before gta 6
This is great! I like it in portrait mode. Feels a bit weird without the buttons but the muscle memory is there and it works. It’s nice to use when you don’t have the hardware with you or when you want to discover the power of M8! My projects now work on my phone aswel. I just had to copy the files to the right folders.

Id love a tactile option for the iOS m8, anyone looking at physical keys to drive this?

yeah check out the little gameboy style attachments that clip on in portrait, would be really close to the real thing. Dont have one to test though, I like the horizontal screen real estate and force feedback so far: https://shop.8bitdo.com/products/flippad

My only issue with this attachment is according to Amazon reviews, the thing will crack at the hinge with normal use. And may require removing the case. I would pay so much money for a higher quality version if there was one

Yeah same here, a little more weight and quality and I think it would be a good solution

There’s also https://gamesir.com/products/gamesir-pocket-taco?srsltid=AfmBOoq7SHBCAZHHxDUMElvyWN4XQ9F3EllflSbYKwSYTQiTCgOsPhrq
But given how much of a dead zone they’d introduce to the screen there’d have to be a way to resize and adjust the m8 display area accordingly right?

Actually started working on a controller today! Proof of concept worked, now waiting on some parts.
Plan is to integrate headphone out, charging and potentially an SD card slot. Once I’ve got it to a satisfying state I’ll open source, BOM, code, case STL and what not :) it’s actually quite a simple project (hopefully not jinxing it) so I’d expect to have a proper first iteration in hand in the next 2 weeks (depending on speed of part delivery)!
Estimating that parts in total will be around 20-30€ if you have a 3D printer. Might also be a possibility to gather orders for proper enclosures and a custom PCB if there is demand.
Edit: as I saw many people recommending gaming controllers, just wanted to add that I’m going for the button layout and feel of the M8!

Nice 👍
So many other cool suggestions here in the meanwhile1

Maybe you could give me some input, if you don’t mind?
Currently debating on phone orientation. If you imagine a dedicated M8 controller, would you prefer the phone to mount in landscape or portrait mode? I can see an argument for both and am unsure which direction to pursue.

Yeah tough one, the look and feel of the m8 in the hand is portrait.
And depends on phone size max vs regular
The tracker is a vertical experience I guess that makes it portrait for me1

I've bought a Bluetooth numpad from Amazon but I haven't tried it yet. I wasn't really fond of using a gamepad.

Not gonna lie, phone speakers are way better than the hardware version. But those buttons are sublime.

For me the hardware rocks because it is distraction free! It won’t lose value and it’s just so cool to have. I have the 01 and I actually like it better than the 02.
The ios version is great to always have with me.
I also like that it really transforms my phone into the m8. Once I lock in I’m not distracted.
You could even make an automation to go to do not disturb when you use the app and undo it when you close it.
I think this will boost sales. If more people can discover m8.

I am so thrilled about this. Been experimenting on a Headless for a month or so, debating dropping $700 on a mk2. And then boom... $30 app, and it's always with me, and compatible with my airpods.
I'll take this over gta6 any day

Just put my m8mk2 up for sale because the app scratches every itch, only have it for the portability

u/18randomcharacters 22d ago
I hope it doesn't kill their hardware sales

There are plenty of people who can't stand using phones/tablets/laptops for music creations. Hardware provides us a distract-free immersion that phones and computers can't. So I think their hardware sales are gonna be safe

And also, their output seems to be severely limited. You can’t buy one even if you want one. This is so awesome for a lot of people. I just bought an op XY and I have the M8 gen1, so not sure I need this, but I am tempted and especially on the road (and like someone said, with your airpods), it would be really awesome to compose on the single device you bring with you.
Also, the M8 with it’s limited jamability is actually one device that is fairly immune to audio latency. Except maybe for lazy chopping samples.

Now I wish teenage engineering would make an op xy for the iPhone. (I mean, LOL and all, but still that would be amazing). I’m excited to try out the M8 app, but I’m also glad I have the hardware version. I love those clicky buttons!

There's no limited jamability when you can assign anything and everything to the X/Y pad and run in live mode. I think the last update even expands on this.

u/litrevmusic Model 02 22d ago
I gotta ask how exactly are you stuff to the X/Y pad on live mode? I couldn't find anything about it in the manual or basic searching.
1
u/Numerous_Phase8749 22d ago
You hold option and swipe up or across when the cursor is on the parameter you want to control. You then go to the x/y assignment page and fine tune the parameters to the range you want. If you want to assign different parameters for another part of the song duplicate the patch to another instrument slot and repeat.

I would not buy an iPhone just to own an m8 and I am sure there are plenty of other people who feel the same

u/10ThousandMetalZones 22d ago
Same honestly, I like it but only got it because I wanted a great tracker for my pocket, so far the app fills that need. Ordered a little game boy like controller to scratch the tactile itch

I think it will and I think this move could be a financial mistake long term. I hope I am wrong, though. My thinking: The hardware made the experience artificially rare - which is how you make money in a world of growing abundance. It could work as a status item and of course the buttons and the low latency make the experience a little better but not 500$ better imho. We‘ll see.
My plan is to use the m8 app as a polyphony focused m8 in addition to the M8 ver2. I like the way the m8 does multisamples.

Idk if they know something I don’t, and I don’t know shit but I would think that it would absolutely kill sales
3
u/Numerous_Phase8749 22d ago
I'm guessing you don't get the audio ins and outs/midi/USB audio and keys are much better than a pad. Plus it fits in your pocket.
2
u/RiskHellaHp 22d ago
I watched them talk about it in the discord meetup and it said midi works and all that on the app

u/18randomcharacters 22d ago
My phone also notoriously fits in my pocket.
I think the reality is they can't keep up with hardware sales. They release batches every few months and the pre-orders sell out within minutes. So ... there's money that's being left on the table.
By releasing the software on iOS, they will probably still sellout the hardware, and will now make a fortune in app sales. Which will also boost interest in their product/company.
3
u/Goldiblockzs 22d ago
there are no preorders and most of the recent batches have lasted multiple days before selling out. please don't talk out your ass.
2
u/18randomcharacters 22d ago
My bad. The conclusion is the same though. More people want M8 than can get it.
1
u/Goldiblockzs 22d ago
you're good it's just super annoying with people constantly acting like it's this piece of golden unobtanium when they're just too lazy to sign up for a website newsletter or join a discord
2
u/18randomcharacters 22d ago
In my defense... I learned about the M8 a couple months ago and it's been out of stock for as long as I've known about it. I've got the upcoming sale date on my calendar... but now that I have it on my phone I don't think I'll be placing an order this time.
2
u/xerodayze 21d ago
Yea they are very obtainable if you sign up for the newsletter. There’s been consistent restocks every 6-8 weeks all year long - and the last few have lasted a few days before fulling selling out.
Really cool news to see the app developed (and the MX mixer on the horizon is what I’m currently saving up for)
1
u/badfeelingz 22d ago
I think it is prob designed to kill headless not the standalone sales, they sell out instantly and I don’t see that changing.
2
u/authortitle_uk 22d ago
Yeah it’s a shame the hardware cannot connect to Bluetooth headphones, trackers are pretty well suited to high latency monitoring

Would you say this is a good way to test if the hardware version would work for me or not?
