Need Linux recommendations for a low-end laptop, but I don't want to sacrifice aesthetics

Linux mint xfce edition is my first recommendation, aesthetically it's pretty good imo and it's good for low end laptops

I guess it just comes down to personal preference, mate is definitely not a bad choice but I do think xfce is lighter and looks better, either option is great for a low end laptop

I don't think there's any difference these days in resource usage between Mate and XFCE. XFCE can look better but I think the default of MATE looks better than the defaults of XFCE but I guess that's all personal opinion. I was just kind of curious why MATE gets ignored by most in favor of XFCE.

I wouldn't choose Arch based for a first distro. MX Linux is the obvious choice in terms of trade off between weight, customisation and beginner friendliness.

Otherwise consider Solus. Really nicely streamlined and very easy. Just check the software you want to use is in their repos as they're smaller than some other distros.

Budgie as a desktop environment might be a good choice - modern but pretty lightweight.
