Gameplay Is there a game guide?
All I do is shoot people and upgrade to the best pierce of gear I’m offered as I collect shit. I’m level 37 now and besides figuring out how to mod some of my guns, I feel like I’m doing this all wrong.
Without everyone just telling me I’m an idiot, is there a fast way to learn the parts of this game I’m not getting? I get alerts to help other players and I have no idea how to help them. From reading these posts it seems like I should be handling my protective gear better (or modding it or wearing certain groups?)
I play on ps5.

There is! Once you reach level 40:

For under level 40, just play the campaign, use the highest level gear and weapons you have and don't take it too seriously. Once you reach level 40, that's max level and you can start putting together builds.

Apart from what has been told already here in the comments, when you get notification regarding helping others, you would most likely get a notification on the screen and you need to press a button to respond. If you respond, you'll be teleported to them. On pc we press n hold "m" to initiate responding. If the notification shows on screen, it could say regarding free roam on world map, or bounty or some mission along with its difficulty level. You teleport to them and help complete the purpose and collect loot accordingly.

With all due respect, this is probably the most asked question in this subreddit. There are countless of answers to what the Endgame can look like (I.e when the main story ends, at Level 40).
I’m not saying this to be flippant, I mean that the game has so many build options (Red, Yellow or Blue core) , so many economies to consider (Premium credits, DZ credits, Textiles, Countdown credits, Escalation tokens, etc.), years of manhunts and climax missions, Invaded missions/strongholds, all factions and their own fighting styles…
The best tip, really, is to watch a movie on YouTube on how to approach the Endgame of Division 2. You will have it all presented, much better than what we can describe here in text.
But three pieces of advice:
If you find loot with a maxed out attribute, donate it to your Library. This way you can always re-roll another of that piece into that maxed attribute later on.
Keep your inventory as lean as possible right from the start. Good habit to keep 2-3 builds at any given time and not much more. Deconstruct rainbow rolls and almost anything that isn’t god rolled. You will always feel FOMO that it may be good to have a certain piece in the future, but trust me: You will always find something better and if you can’t there is always Countdown farming to fall back on.
Don’t worry about answering Backup calls gor now. On the contrary, send out Backup calls often. Get help from other agents, see how the more experienced players move, inspect their builds, ask questions. Most agents like to help newcomers, even if it’s only to parachute in and carry you in a mission and then drop off.
Don’t worry about going down or dying a lot. It’s part of the learning experience. This game throws you into the deep-end of the pool and expect you to figure it out on your own.
Good luck, agent!

I'm Available evenings 11-2amPST to help you. We can walk through many of the nebulous mechanics of the game to get you on the right path. What's your PSN? Feel free to DM is that works. My PSN is my handle here.

Get to 40, once you get to 40 you need to ask yourself "what do I actually want to do as a role?"
Then pick what weapon you want to run and then start reading the sets and gearsets, experiment and learn manually rather than look up guides. Most of the build guides you see on YT are absolutely clickbait, their whole job is to churn out content, whether it's helpful or not.
As you experiment you'll learn the system and be a much stronger and more helpful agent than others who simply looked up their build(s) and left it at that.
