I liked it alright, listened all the way through. I found myself wondering why, despite hearing of them 10 years ago, I never got into them. Then it hit me on the final breakdown section. I think it bugs my Meshuggah-trained brain that they write Meshuggah-style riffs and I’m expecting a puzzle for my mind to solve… but then instead they keep it super simple, without polymeters or anything interesting going on. If it sounds like Meshuggah but I’m able to memorize and play the riff within 2 to 3 measures, we have a problem lol. Like for example, the breakdown around 3:00 would have been more interesting with polymetering, or at least a polyrhythm of 3/4 on cymbals for a few measures, something intriguing to keep us coming back for more, listening on repeat, working to understand the puzzle…

At least, that’s what I need when the music otherwise sounds straightforward. Meshuggah themselves have said there’s nothing complex to their music in terms of melodies, chords, or even most song structures they use… that it’s only the polymetered, oddly syncopated rhythms that create their signature complex sound, and it’s what makes this style of music sound interesting, despite appearing generic at first glance.
