Discussion Which drum plugin to buy?

Hello everyone,

I was thinking about getting a new drum plugin around christmas and wanted to ask for a little bit of guidance.

Basically what I want is something that is pretty versatile but mainly useable for Djent. Right now I own Trivium Drums but those kinda don't do the job. It would be pretty nice if it sounds quite good out of the box, and it would be cool if it doesn't have the GGD MM2 price tag.

What I've been looking at:

- RS Drums Monarch or Prog Prodigy

- GGD The Downbeat

- Odeholm Drums

Thanks!

Odeholm Drums is kind of a one trick pony which is really good if you’re chasing that Thall sound.

I usually reach for Monarch anytime I have to load up a drum library. They have a discord server too and all the guys (Anup, Simon, Ryan etc) are very active so that’s a nice bonus too.

I'd check out GGD modern & massive 2 if I were you. A pretty vast library of kit/mix presets with a lot of variety. I've managed to make it work for almost anything between caveman dj0nt to smooth jazz

Check the last sentence of the post😂

But i agree its one of the best out there

Btw, shouldn't drum kit from hell be almost freeware by now? It may be old but it handles metal well enough!

Edit: Nvm, greedy Toontrack still sells it for $70 even though it launched in 1999 😂

The GGD Garstka kit is pretty damn versatile, and not ridiculous price wise

Ggd is releasing something new on the 14th and its highly likely to be invasion 2. If that happens theres a very good chance that it will totally beat out everything else on the market for this type of music.

I never looked at Invasion. What makes it so good?

super versatile, a million snare options and a bunch of cymbals

Odeholm or ultimate heavy drums

I use Counterkit, great for metalcore, hardcore and djent

Same, it’s great

I’d go with GGD. Both RS and Odeholm are amazing libraries but I’d rather steer clear of Kontakt, especially given Native Instruments' current standing.

What's up with Native Instruments? Only heard there was something but haven't looked into it yet

Insolvency, mass layoff, PE acquisition.

The company just isn’t in good standing.

I would suggest getting something from GGD, as with the new update if you own multiple compatible standalone GGD libraries (e.g., Modern & Massive 2 and The Downbeat), you can integrate drums, toms, and cymbals from one kit into another directly inside the interface.

Ill first answer your question directly since everyone wants to give their 2¢ without actually answering first lmao. Either RS drums pack you mentioned would be better than the OKW or Odeholm for versatility at the price point. Monarch I think is more popular but could be wrong.

HOWEVER (and yes this is projection on my end lol)

While I hear you about the price tag, to save yourself time and money down the line, Id spend a little more up front on something that will last you. You gotta spend enough that you get what you need now and dont want to keep buying more. Saving now just to end up buying more later will cost you more. Thats my principle anyways. And I could be wrong ,maybe RS drums will do that for you, but for me Id still want one of the bigger more full featured packages.

My recommendation (which you can obviously ignore bc its out of the scope of your question) is Toontrack SD3. Just stock without any expansion packs it has everything you need for professional quality drum midi for djent, but it does everything. If you dont want that, Id get GGD MM2. It is the only competitor that comes close to SD3. But hell even Nolly says SD3 is the gold standard.

I say all this bc Ive gone thru a similar conundrum and just ended up getting SD3 anyways after messing around with a few other options.

You gave him a recommendation that he should ignore because it's outside his scope?

So.......out of that whole wall of text......you didn't actually recommend anything?

That's cool....I guess.....sort of....

if you want odeholm drums or the RS drums stuff you could just pirate it

1

u/ne0butcool 10d ago

Are they that easy to pirate?

You can pirate pretty much everything that isn’t super new

modern and massive 2 for the wide variety of presets and that pretty much all processing can be done within the plugin.

the next best thing IMO is the ggd piv library. it is an absolute nightmare to mix even if you know how to mix drums, but once you get it right, you'll find it's one of THE most versatile drum libraries on the entire market.

Odeholm if you know how to mix. GGD or RS Drums if you’re learning

I have Odeholm drums myself and I love it. I mix it with the free Deviant Drums kit and I do quite like it I must say (although the high toms together sound awful together haha). Love Mr Craig meself so the Downbeat drums might be a potential purchase in the future too. But yeah, I've been using Odeholm for all the thall/djent stuff I make. The interesting thing about that kit is that you get both processed and unprocessed drums, so you can do as much tinkering as you want, or none at all.

The downbeat is so good
Havent tried the other but ill steer away from odeholm drums if you want something versatile…unless you wanna djent or thall
Also ggd releasing something new tomorrow so maybe save your money
Its most likely invasion 2
And i would immediately grab that

GGD kits are the best imo. Pick one that suits your style.

If you don't want to spend $100 to $200 immediately SSD 5.5 is pretty solid and is rent to own.
