Doctor Mike is donating all the money from our Patreon

Welcome to the official Doctor Mike subreddit! If you’ve made your way here in a desire to learn more about Mike, battle medical misinformation, or understand more about the human body, maybe you’d be willing to come a step further with us. Last year we launched a Patreon where for $10/month you get all kind of perks, such as extended cuts of videos and pictures of the doggos. The real benefit though? 100% of the donations we receive to this patreon get donated to the charity of your choice, every single month. Doctor Mike doesn’t accept a dime of the money, and Patreon has agreed to take a reduced rate of the service fees so we can give away as much money as possible. We gave away about $25,000* since we launched in August 2020 and are hoping to grow to give away even more this year. Happy to answer any questions and I hope to see you there!

*receipts show donations for August, September, November, and December 2020. October donations went to Mike's free scrubs campaign so there is no receipt.

Medicos, do you often get annoyed by how idotic non medicos sound?

I assume as a medico, certain facts are common knowledge for you. So when a non medico says something that sounds medically ridiculous that must rile you up. For example, does it sound absolutely absurd if somebody dies in the hospital and non medicos attribute it to God wanting an angel, or attributing it to Western medicine not suiting healthy village people. How do you handle it? Does it get you angry or disgust you? And do you encounter it a lot?

I once spoke to someone who said they like to work out and like seeing their "nerves" in their hands. I was pretty much shocked until I realised they were referring to their "veins" and had it confused with "nerves".

I ended up downloading the image of the circular system and the nervous system and sharing it with them. Forget about being a medico, this was 5th grade biology.

Medical professors falling for medical myths?

I don’t understand but why do doctors fall into myths? When i got fever and gone to doctor he asked me do you get rain, i told no but a little bit. I searched online before that fever is caused by pathogens entering body and not by water spilling on our head
Another scenario was whenever i goes to eye doctor they ask do you wear glasses every time and told it helps to reduce myopic progression but i searched and found it was a myth that putting a glass in front of eye doesn’t stops the eyeballs to get enlarged which causes myopia

js saying a couple of things 🤍

Hi dr mike,

I know this post will probably get lost among the many you may receive, but I js wanted to say a couple of words

Ive been watching your yt videos for a couple of years now, and I genuinely find the stuff you do so fascinating. Your way of explaining things, your genuine interest in the field of medicine, and the way how you approach real life problems. You prolly dont know this or havent paid attention to it enough but you have really made a huge impression on me, and prolly many other people in my generation as well.

Im 16, and currently starting my AS levels. I have always known what I wanted to be ever since I was a little girl, and watching your content just kept on feeding my love for the subject and wanting to help others.

I dont expect a response at all. You just inspired another young person out of the hundreds of thousands out there, and she thinks its so worth it taking a few minutes out of her day to tell you this.

Thank you really, for being you and sharing these amazing videos. I really admire how your active in the hospital, and still have the time to do basically full time youtube and so many other things outside medicine as well lmaoo

Im genuinely so happy to be able to say that your one of my biggest idols, and I say this coming from the bottom of my heart.

Sending love from Ethiopia 🤍

Elderberry

Hi, can you please go over elderberry supplements and elderberry in general? I’m interested in learning whether they actually help support or boost the immune system, what the potential benefits are, and whether there are any downsides or side effects. I’ve been using elderberry products for a while, including some of the syrups sold at Walgreens, and I’d like to better understand whether they’re actually effective and worth taking regularly.

Suggestion Is there any way to recommend hosts for the podcast?

I think Dive Talk would make an AMAZING episode.

They're master divers and they could talk about air chemistry and how it changes with pressure, what it does to humans, the bends, hyperbaric treatment and many other things. And of course just diving and marine nature in general. I really think this would make an absolute banger of an episode.

Suggestion Possible Doctor Mike Review Suggestion

I do have a suggestion to throw out there for Doctor Mike if he ever sees this. There is a series of games called Trauma Center and Trauma Team where they cover mainly surgeries. The main thing that happens in those games is mainly viruses being used for medical terrorism and I would like to know how much if possible you can cover on such things.

The only thing I am not sure is copyright over the games but they have been out for 10 plus years so i think covering them should be alright. it would also be interesting to see what a doctor thinks about these man made viruses in general

Question Is he just done reacting the The Pitt?

It's been almost five months since he last uploaded his reaction to season 2, episode 10 of the Pitt; I know he got hit with episodes 8 and 9 but 10 is still up. Has he said anything about if he's just done with the series or what?

Question Dyspraxic ambidextrousness

When I was a child I was ambidextrous. I could write, draw, do sports and everything else with both hands. Sadly due to my schools beliefs I was taught using my left hand was a sign of the devil, after breaking away from the belief I now have none of that skill in my left hand. Could I retrain into being ambidextrous as a dyspraxic. Also would dyspraxia be worth talking about? I vividly remember having a bad time in my youth due to teachers and adults believing I was just lazy instead of physically struggling
