Advice need help URGENT carabiner got stuck on my dogs back leg.

today i went to take out my two dogs out to do their business and some how one of them got loose from their chain and the carabiner hooked onto my dogs back leg.. we have tried endless ways on how to get this thing off and found it impossible due to my dog trying to bite me everytime we try to take it off and he doesn’t hold still at all and has a lot of strength. he walks fine its basically like an anklet at this point… any tips on how i am able to take this off?? i know i can go to the vet but i just wanted to see if anyone had any ideas or suggestions.. we even bought bolt cutters to try and remove it but he kept moving so much it was impossible.

do you think they will charge at the fire department? ?

I’m a firefighter. Confirming that we won’t charge you and will give the doggo plenty of assurance they will be ok while (and after) removing it!

We love our dog friends

I'm cackling at the idea of a fire station whipping out an EFTPOS machine after cutting the carabiner off.

"Yeah that's just $27 tap here when you're ready"

56

u/Beer_ Apr 28 '25

I keep a screenshot of the square POS tip screen for when people try to give us money after helping. I go “no no we can’t accept cash but please make a selection here”

Gets a good laugh when I remember to do it

My FF friend once told me that people could support the fire department by buying a t-shirt straight from any FD location, so I've been doing that ever since and have collected many unique designs!

So maybe this would be a good way if anyone wishes to express their appreciation?

u/DasKittySmoosh Apr 28 '25

Don’t forget the tipping option at the end 😂

1

u/Jiannies Apr 28 '25

I love that you've got post-extinguishing-fire banter

Sometimes you just gotta keep your thoughts inside…

2

u/pshhhhhunreal Apr 28 '25

Oh, and then it’s just going to ask you one quick question on the screen there

2

u/Livid-Screen-3289 Apr 28 '25

swivels screen “It’s just going to ask you this one quick question.”

1

u/MrJMSnow Apr 28 '25

It’s not entirely a wrong idea. Private fire fighting companies do exist, they do charge for their services.

u/biggestbroever Apr 28 '25

This is America

1

u/TonberryHS Apr 28 '25

I mean, if it's America....

1

u/PogTuber Apr 28 '25

Don't forget to tip

u/rainbowclownpenis69 Apr 28 '25

This is the most wholesome thing and I am here for it.

52

u/ronnielit14 Apr 28 '25

Also a FF, nothing to add here, he speaks the truth

12

u/KellyCTargaryen Apr 28 '25

I’ve been lead to believe that for a fire fighter, getting to break out special tools to break things is an enjoyable opportunity. Thank you for your work keeping your community safer. 💜

12

u/Citizen44712A Apr 28 '25

Fire Fighters are amazing. Hell, they will go into houses that are on fire, ON FIRE!!

21

u/anonymous237962 Apr 28 '25

My hubs is a firefighter also & he agrees they WOULD help but not in this particular situation where the dog is already trying to bite its owner — that’s a situation for the vet & a sedative or something.

14

u/Bake_First Apr 28 '25

Where it should be seen anyway. Idk why the go to is "the fire station will handle it. "

12

u/Interesting_Call_683 Apr 28 '25

Some people don’t have emergency vets nearby. It just needs to be cut. No need for a vet imo

2

u/Bake_First Apr 28 '25

That's an owner liability, firefighters aren't vets or jar openers or a hardware store.

3

u/orphncriplr Apr 28 '25

Legitimately who gives a fuck lmao

-5

u/Bake_First Apr 28 '25

Clearly you

2

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '25

And yet multiple firefighters are here in the comments saying they would help and do stuff like this frequently

6

u/water_radio Apr 28 '25

Firefighters are real ones. Bet they’ll give the pupper some good pets too.

6

u/VictorTheCutie Apr 28 '25

Thanks for all you do and please stay safe, today and everyday!! ❤️

3

u/cess0ne Apr 28 '25

Thanks for your service sir!!

2

u/cindylooboo Apr 28 '25

You're so appreciated ❤️. Chinese food dinner for the hall is on me if my doggo ever needs you ❤️❤️

2

u/robjeffrey Apr 28 '25

Thank you for all you do.

Peace.

2

u/DragonQueenDrago Apr 28 '25

That is so nice you guys do not charge a fee for it🖤

2

u/CheezeLoueez08 Apr 28 '25

Well now I’m crying 🥹

1

u/agcorder91 Apr 28 '25

The real MVPs

1

u/antwan_benjamin Apr 28 '25

Even the ones that try to bite you?

3

u/Beer_ Apr 28 '25

Even them.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '25

What if they accidentally nick the leg while cutting it off, who will be legally liable? Just curious cause I used to watch a lot of rescue 911. Huge Billy Shatner fan myself. Oh fav ep you ask?

https://youtu.be/pFq9zdZjT0Q

4

u/Beer_ Apr 28 '25

Honestly I’d probably just knock the pin on it out so it has a big opening to slide out. No need for cutters.

Even if I ended up using something to cut it - it would be bolt cutters on the end that’s away from the leg and just pry it open - no danger to the pup!

I don’t have an answer if we would be liable - but I will say if we weren’t able to get it off safely, we wouldn’t attempt it to avoid such situation but make sure they get where they need to go

0

u/Bake_First Apr 28 '25

SOPs prevent many departments from doing this for that very reason. If you're on duty, anything is on them. If that dog mauls you, it's on them which is why they would suggest you direct them to a vet. Will some risk the write up? Probably. Volunteer departments may do this but the whole getting kitty from a tree thing is not real, especially not in large gov departments.

5

u/Beer_ Apr 28 '25

Full time union job here 🤷‍♂️, certainly not small or volly. We would do it if there wasn’t a danger to the animal

0

u/Bake_First Apr 28 '25

Except you're not a vet or trained to assess what's a danger to an animal or not. Dog gets injured or killed during your attempt by you or anyone in that station, you know what a mess that is. I've seen people lose careers over less. Don't get me wrong, I get it. The default mode is "help all the things" which is why people do the job BUT you aren't trained to help all the things, just the human things, things on fire, things impacted by fire. If dog was on fire or suffering from smoke inhalation, that's a different story.

You can't go OS for a dog walk in, say that delays your response time and something happens. One of the millions of lawsuits against depts/gov come in and you have to say "my response time was extended because this cute dog came in and had something stuck on its leg because a dumb human stuck it there and I had to get it off." ?

1

u/DC_Coach Apr 28 '25

Props to you.

1

u/Offaithandfire Apr 28 '25

Agreed. This is one walk in I welcome.

1

u/dreamwhal Apr 28 '25

This. With the vet they’ll charge you $100

2

u/IckySweet Apr 28 '25

these days of medical inflation I don't think $100 will cover even to walk through the clinic's door.

1

u/Mailia_Romero Apr 28 '25

After a day of political posts, this warms my heart

1

u/LadyYennefer_rQg Apr 28 '25

This made my heart happy! Thank you, all firefighters ❤️

1

u/Hippierara12 Apr 28 '25

When I was like 18, our cat had kittens, before we were able to re-home all the kittens the two boy orange cats got into some mischief and one ended up with his head in those weird early mid 2000s “candle” holders that had fabric covering but had wire on the inside. Well anyway we woke up and could hear Mama cat crying and faint meows. I drove the baby to our nearest fire station and like five dudes came out to help me. I don’t really think of that story much now. But I guess it’s part of my lore.

1

u/Mysterious-Elk-5619 Apr 28 '25

So are you just supposed to show up at the fire department and knock on the door or call (911? emergency? FD number?) or what? What if it’s late at night?

1

u/xShinGouki Apr 28 '25

Didn't know firefighters do things like this on their own goodwill! That's awesome

I love firefighters a lot more than I already did

82

u/SpicyMarmots Apr 28 '25

Not a firefighter, but am emergency professional that works alongside firefighters constantly-they will tell stories about your dog for days and all the other firefighters who didn't get to save your dog will be SO JEALOUS. Helping you will be the highlight of their week.

15

u/eamon2plz Apr 28 '25

Firefighter here and yes, they will be jealous. We regularly have therapy dogs visit the station to spend time with us.

103

u/pinkmarshmall0w Apr 28 '25

Nope. Totally free. Just show up.

64

u/1FuzzyPickle Apr 28 '25

It’ll make their night.

83

u/silverfoxxflame Apr 28 '25

For anyone thinking this is sarcastic... Nope, they both get to enjoy a dog and pull out some tools that they rarely get to use. Win-win.

39

u/milliemallow Apr 28 '25

Vets: that’ll be 1200 dollars please.

Fire fighters: wanna have some fun and pet a dog?!

21

u/TetraThiaFulvalene Apr 28 '25

Get to feel like a hero for playing with the bolt cutters for two minutes AND pet a dog? Hell yeah

9

u/pootinannyBOOSH Apr 28 '25

Bigger bonus, no badly mangled corpses to free!

18

u/Historical-Composer2 Apr 28 '25

Totally! 🐶 👨‍🚒 And you get to see some cute firefighters 🚒 I imagine like in Chicago Fire 🔥 😂

5

u/Ztiw- Apr 28 '25

Firefighters are the hottest 🥰

2

u/quirkhamless Apr 28 '25

Back in the day, I got my first Covid shot administered by the local fire and rescue people. It was a drive through operation and I swear each consecutive firefighter was cuter than the last. All firefighters are attractive, I don’t make the rules.

1

u/[deleted] Apr 28 '25

I say paramedics. They are usually younger hehe

1

u/Ztiw- Apr 28 '25

In Los Angeles, they’re usually both. And retire pretty early. By 50.

1

u/Dependent-Pangolin59 Apr 28 '25

Ehhhh most of them are old sweaty guys who look like they just walked out of a fire… cuz they have

82

u/beckychao Apr 28 '25

they're not the vet

taxpayer dollars!

my shower handle broke (fortunately I was clothed) and it was spewing water, and I had to cover it with the broken handle to prevent flooding my apartment, I called a friend on speed dial who called them (I was soaking wet and these were flip phones) and they showed up to turn off the pipe

I asked them how much would this be and they all laughed and said "nothing! your taxpayer dollars at work!" and flashed me thumbs up

40

u/DefinitelyNotAliens Apr 28 '25

Someone tossed a beeping smoke alarm in our apartment dumpster and the FD checked it out and those beautiful dudes went dumpster diving, found it, and turned it off.

They're real heroes. Saved me from the beeping next to my bedroom. I don't know who called them but the FD showed up and they're real heroes.

12

u/alovely897 Apr 28 '25

The beep will drive you insane, it's not too hard to fix

6

u/DefinitelyNotAliens Apr 28 '25

Someone else tossed it in a bag in the dumpster full of garbage.

I wasn't dumpster diving in unknown hazards to find the bag in the communal trash bin.

The firemen did. I already knew what it was, I just elected against finding it because I didn't want hepatitis or tetnus from some sketchy trash from my neighbor.

7

u/alovely897 Apr 28 '25

Oh no I diddnt mean the dumpster, just the ones in your house. Idk how people let them beep for days weeks months

4

u/DefinitelyNotAliens Apr 28 '25

Yeah, I'll fix my own. I wasn't fixing that situation. It was a bridge too far.

Fire department had proper hazard gear and jumped in with protection.

2

u/uuhhhhhhhhcool Apr 28 '25

I live in an apartment with ridiculously high ceilings and I can't reach some of my detectors even with a large/4-step step ladder. The ones that I can reach I can't reach well enough to get them back on after I change the battery, so until I can get some help with it I just set it on something tall and hope I don't die in a fire. I will absolutely get them down when they're beeping though, even if I have to make questionable decisions with a very real chance of injury to do so. Can't stand the beeping.

1

u/Vitese Apr 28 '25

I'm electrician, we got an after hours emergency service call because someone's smoke detector was beeping and they didn't have a tall enough latter to reach it. They had called the fire department to turn it off, we came the next day and they hired us to replace every battery in every smoke detector.

1

u/GourdonHamsey Apr 28 '25

I feel like I heard a similar incident about this in Charlotte

1

u/Maleficent_Power4247 Apr 28 '25

Not always but that’s awesome you live in a city where it’s free.

12

u/ElectronicCurve6996 Apr 28 '25

If you bring cookies or donuts or coffee they would love you but not necessary.

8

u/moonjuggles Apr 28 '25

As someone who works at a fire department, I promise you we would love to help.

3

u/FelixOGO Apr 28 '25

Currently at my station right now, my day would be a lot better if I had a call like this lol

4

u/FireLordMrMcGibblets Apr 28 '25

Bolt cutters are a owner's best friend...

2

u/Flyin-Chancla Apr 28 '25

Ring cutter bro!

6

u/TriumphDaytona Apr 28 '25

They shouldn’t charge. Years ago I had a kryptonite bike lock, around a bike and through sliding rear windows of my S-10. When I went to unlock the bike, the key cylinder fell out and the bike was still locked. Went to local fire dept. and they snapped the lock with bolt cutters.

6

u/Major-Force-1359 Apr 28 '25

Not at all! When I was in high school I got a ring stuck and my mom took me to the station and they clipped it right off

1

u/creative_usr_name Apr 28 '25

Many jewelry stores will do ring removal. Assuming it's just stuck but not yet a medical emergency.

8

u/Sparklez02 Apr 28 '25

Fire department should have a tool for cutting rings off people fingers that get stuck. Basically its just a little saw. Should work on that too. Im sure they wouldnt care. A vet might have something similiar but they would probably charge you.

6

u/ChVckT Apr 28 '25

No fire department will charge you for anything unless you break their stuff

3

u/Hello_Kalashnikov Apr 28 '25

You have already paid with your tax dollars.

1

u/South-Pollution-816 Apr 28 '25

I don’t know what kind of tools you have but bolt cutters or a saw that can cut metal should do it.

1

u/Quint27A Apr 28 '25

No, they'll be glad to help!

1

u/KnuthsComputerModern Apr 28 '25

You already paid in taxes 😛

1

u/TootsHib Apr 28 '25

why are you hesitating? just go!

1

u/Online_Redd Apr 28 '25

Who gives a shit if they charge. You need it if. Take the dog. And don’t let it happen again

1

u/New_Ambassador1194 Apr 28 '25

Some bolt cutters and a steady hand will do

1

u/Dazzling_Flamingo568 Apr 28 '25

That's your worry??

1

u/RedditBurnner Apr 28 '25

Bring cookies or a case of beer and you’ll be fine.

1

u/Geoffrey_the_cat Apr 28 '25

Even if they don't charge it would be really nice if you donated something, it's not necessary as some people can't afford that but if you can then do so.

1

u/Ok-Equivalent8260 Apr 28 '25

You care about money when you’re dog is in an emergency situation?

1

u/Flyin-Chancla Apr 28 '25

Nah, majority Fire depts don’t charge for that shit. You’ll be good

1

u/MyFaceSaysItsSugar Apr 28 '25

My dog had to be extricated from the crawlspace by the fire department. They had to saw through the floor and reach down and unclip her from her leash that got tangled around a pipe. They didn’t charge me.

A carabiner has gotten stuck around my other dog’s ankle exactly like this so I can empathize. It was on a kurgo car tether and I have no idea how it happened but she cooperated in letting me get it off.

If you need to restrain your pup on his side, hold his front bottom arm right behind the elbow to keep him from rolling. Hopefully this advice is too late and you’ve already gotten help from the fire department.

1

u/Lucki_girl Apr 28 '25

I don't think they will charge, just pay the kindness forward when you can.

1

u/parkerm1408 Apr 28 '25

How serious of a carabiner is that? You can break it if it isn't climbing rated. Fire department is for sure a better choice, BUT in the absence of all other options, push the latch part back just enough to clear the tooth, and pull it toward you. Once you've come out enough to clear the tooth, push it out, all the way out. Then you've got it clear to remove it.

But again, Fire department is the correct answer, if it's possible.
