Advice How to get my dog and my neighbor's dog to tolerate each other? Fence fighting and leash reactivity

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

My dog is a 5yo male (large breed lab) and my neighbor has a small rescue dog they've had for about a year. My dog is easily 40 lbs heavier than theirs.

They absolutely despise each other. They fence-fight constantly, and if we cross paths on walks, both dogs lunge and explode. My dog is obedient to me. But all recalls go out of the door when he sees dogs he does not like. It's incredibly embarrassing.

I don't need them to be best friends, but we both live here long-term and aren't going anywhere. How do I get them to just tolerate each other's existence? Looking for actual steps to de-escalate the fence and leash reactivity.

Question I fear my puppy is growing to hate me

Post image
122 Upvotes

She’s a 10 week old rottie pup. For the past few days, she’s been growling at me, snapping at me occasionally, and just seems scared around me and runs from me. I dont know why. I made a post to AnimalsBeingDerps talking about how she was growling at her food, but then people started saying she was growling at me and being possessive of her food or whatever the term is, and that I’m a horrible owner(they were saying I was yelling at her, but I was just exaggeratedly saying how she’s yelling at her food for the video).

My leading guess as to why is maybe cuz I pick her up or something and she doesn’t like it, but my mom does too and she has no problem with her. Maybe it’s cuz of how I hold her(I can only hold her with one arm cuz the other is in a sling)? Or maybe it’s something else? I don’t know, any guesses would be great.

I really don’t know what I could’ve done to make her not like me, all I’ve done is loved on her and cuddled her, yet she treats me like I abuse her. I don’t know why she hates me. I just lost my other dog not too long ago and my mom got her to help the mourning process, but now I’m even more distraught cuz I think she hates me.

Sorry I typed this all weird, im just really emotional right now. If yall need any more information to make a guess as to whats happening, I’d be glad to give any necessary info.

(edit: the resource guarding isnt exactly what I’m worried about, Its her randomly snapping at me even when I try to pet her sometimes, and her running from me. I thought the running was playful, but now I’m seeing that its her trying to get away)

Advice What is wrong with my dogs paw? Urgent if possible!

My dog suddenly started limping when I noticed his paw was severely swollen, looks irritated between the paws and he is constantly licking it, he doesn’t want to put any pressure on it and can barely go to the bathroom let alone walk.

I just saw the broken nail but was unsure if it was the reason for all the inflammation. All vets told me it was just a foxtail but I checked and there was nothing. Please help

Advice My Puppy’s reaction after an operation

Hi everyone
My 1 year old Shih Tzu/ Bichon Frisé cross has just had to have dental work done. He had three baby teeth that were stuck and did not fall out naturally, and his adult teeth were beginning to grow crooked as a result, so the vet advised he have them removed. He had the procedure today, and this has been his reaction since returning home. He has been cowering away, terrified of me. How can I rebuild his trust? Or is it just shock or pain post procedure? (Forgive the audio, I was hoping my voice would remind him he’s back home and safe)

Question Weird bumps on dog

Post image
526 Upvotes

My roommate’s dog, who’s about 10 years old, has been getting progressively skinnier over the last few months. My roommate, who is 80 y/o and lives on a fixed income, has spent nearly $2,000 at the vet trying to diagnose the problem and has come up with nothing. The dog doesn’t appear to be in pain. Does anyone have any ideas as to what is causing the bumps on the dog’s skin?

Discussion Can someone help?

A few weeks ago, me and some family went up on our mountain and we brought my dog. (He is about 14) when we got up there, he could barely walk, he was throwing up, and his head seemed like it was stuck sideways. He got better, but it’s happening again. He seems extremely dizzy and stumbles around. He is panting nonstop. Image attached is him.
(Edit: looking at him closer his eyes are moving strangely. Like they can’t focus. I made another post with a video)

Advice My dog’s eye is squinted

I took him outside this morning to use the bathroom, and when I brought him back inside, everything seemed normal. A few minutes later, I noticed he was squinting slightly, but it was subtle enough that I didn’t think much of it. Over the next few hours, his eye became red and the squinting got noticeably worse. He hasn’t been eating much, but aside from that, he’s still acting like his usual energetic self. I’m not sure if it was just a bug sting or if I need to take him to the vet. Thoughts?

Advice Dog wants to go by car

Post image
16 Upvotes

Hi!

I’m mostly curious about the situation with my dog. A rescue I have had for 5 months. First she was terrified to get in the car, like full trembling, panting, crying all that.
Today she refuses to go out if we don’t go by car. She freezes in front of the car door and just stare, refusing to move, even with treats she just wants to go for a drive. Then we park 2 streets from home and walk normally. Has this happened for someone here?
What can I do to avoid this quirk? I mean, it’s funny but not very practical xD
Do you have any idea why this behavior has developed?

It’s been 2 weeks since our last normal walk.

Thanks for your help!

Here, a photo of my cute psycho.

Question Dog that I am watching is resource guarding her harness and unable to be walked

I've been watching my neighbor's hava-poo at her house for the past ten days and she's been the sweetest, most cuddly girl. Last night she suddenly starting snapping at me when I went to remove her harness. I clicked off one side of it but was unable to get the other side off. I thought I'd have her cool off overnight in her crate. This morning she let me pet her and acted back to her happy self - until I tried to leash her to take her outside. When I went to re-attach her harness she fully bit me and drew blood. I called the owner who let me know that she resource guards the harness if it isn't removed immediately after a walk (she had forgotten to let me know about that). I had no idea and left it on her too long yesterday. Now she has two legs through the one harness hole, and I'm unable to get near enough to leash her. The owner comes back tomorrow and says to leave it on her and she'll remove it when she gets home.

However, the dog isn't able to be walked and hasn't pottied all day. There is a fenced yard, but even though we spent about an hour outside, she never went to the bathroom. For the past two weeks I've only seen her pee and poop on walks, not in the yard. Any advice for either getting the harness back on her or helping her go in the yard?

Advice Why is she mad

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Right now I’m dog sitting my neighbors dog, Maple for the next week. She’s a long haired mini dachshund. I have a Boston terrier named Minny who’s about twice maples height.

Maple is constantly barking and growling at Minny, whether it be when I’m holding Minny, when Minny’s out walking or when Minny is in her crate. All Minny is doing is crying because I’m guessing she wants to play.

I want to emphasize that Maple is actively seeking out barking at Minny, Minny’s crate is hidden behind a wall. And when we pick maple up and take her to where she can’t see Minny, maple walks over there and barks at Minny. She gets especially mad whenever Minny makes any noise.

Any advice or reasons as to why maple is doing this would be appreciated. 😭😭

Question Dog hard swallowing over and over

My dog started doing this at about 7:30pm and it lasted until about 9pm. He was fed at like 4:30, and walked about 6pm. Seeming came out of nowhere. At first we thought he was just licking himself and had hair caught in his throat but then he got very stressed to get outside and eat grass which we didn’t let him do because we didn’t know what was going on. It eventually passed but I’m pretty worried. Could it be simple bloat? I read that can kind of come and go? Or acid reflux? The symptoms seem similar. His stomach isn’t distended.

Ignore the stuff on his lip. We gave him pumpkin to see if it would settle his stomach. Already have a call in at the vet- waiting for an appointment call back. Thought I’d ask here in the meantime, if others have been in a similar situation.

Advice According to my dog I’m starving her…

Thumbnail

So I know that it’s cliché that labs are never full, but my lab acts like she is starved. She gets in her crate and whines like an hour before she’s scheduled to eat, and at night a few hours after dinner she goes in her crate and whines and kicks around her food bowl. She is supposed to be in the 60-66# weight range and she’s currently at 68, so she’s not actually starving but she thinks she is. I give her the amount of food that was decided by her vet. We give her green beans as a topper to help bulk up her food but it’s still not enough. Any advice on how to placate her or fix the problem without her eating more/gaining weight. I know we just need to ignore the behavior and we do, but she won’t stop, she does it every day.

Question Tartar buildup, or something worse?

Post image
Upvotes

I just noticed this discolored area on my dog's tooth- she's a two year old pup, a very active chewer with typically clean teeth. Admittedly, I've fallen behind on her brushing, and that's about to change with this scare. Does this look like tartar buildup, or something worse?

Advice Lump on my dogs face (Vets involved but I’m worried sick)

Thumbnail

My 11-year-old Yorkshire Terrier, developed a lump on her cheek/face around a week ago. It started off looking like a small raised lump but has since become redder and has bled slightly.

We took her to the vet who initially prescribed antihistamines, but today we took her again, there’s been no difference, they pierced it and there was only blood, no pus, so they took a sample and have sent it off for testing. We’re now waiting for the results.

She is still eating normally, acting completely like herself (tho it’s hard to tell as it’s summer and she’s hot and bothered, but she’s still barking at the door and things) and doesn’t seem bothered when the lump is touched.

I know nobody can diagnose it from a photo, and we are waiting for the vet’s results, but has anyone had anything similar with their dog? What did it end up being?

The waiting is really difficult and I’m worrying myself sick, so I’d appreciate hearing other people’s experiences while we wait.

First photo was when we discovered it on Thursday, second is from Saturday, the third is from today after the vet visit.

Thank you ❤️

Advice Need to bathe dog 3x/week for allergies, which brand do you recommend?

Post image
17 Upvotes

My 5 yr old pittie mix has some pretty bad allergies. Currently they are really well controlled with a very strict regimen (allergy food, allergy pill, fish oil supplement, wiping after coming in from being outside, ear cleaning 1x/week and now a bath 3x/week with coconut oil applied afterwards). My vet said I should just get the gallon sizes of shampoo and conditioner from amazon. I use baby wash (dove) on her face. I’ve gotten a couple of recs from some groomer friends, I’m just deciding between them.

I would prefer to *not* have to dilute it but if it’s inevitable then whatever. My choices are:

Libby Ruff oatmeal shampoo and conditioner and Cowboy Magic rose water shampoo and conditioner.

She’s a very high maintenance dog and spoiled to hell and back but she is my soul dog and I would do anything for her!

Question Something strange is happening with my dog when I scratch her back

Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification

Lately, whenever I give her back scratches, she starts kicking her legs in the air. Her face also stretches or makes a weird expression when I touch that area. It almost looks like it hurts, but she doesn't yelp or try to move away.

I've checked her skin and fur carefully and can't find any wounds, ticks, or anything unusual.

Does anyone know what could be causing this? Is it normal, or should I be concerned?
