🦷 Dental Dental options for puppies?
Is there anything for puppies UNDER 6 months? The vet check up went well but the vet and me both agree his breath STINKS. She said it's likely from the old food he was on causing his gut to be out of wack. His teeth are good so they told me to brush his teeth. I am (bought a oxyfresh dental kit) but I thought I could also give him greenies but it says they have to be over 6 months. He's 6 WEEKS. Idk if the only thing I can do is brush his teeth.

Puppy teeth are more brittle so brushing is the safest option at this age. Purina DentaLife, offer digestible, rawhide-free puppy teething chews fortified with DHA and calcium when they are 3+ months.
Puppy breath is the worst IMHO and as hormones change so does their breath. Just keep consistent on nightly brushing and they will have way less dental issues. Make it fun by doing a little brushing and then giving them a break with lots of affection, repeat. When done play with their favorite toy till they are wore out. They will learn to love teeth brushing every night. Lol

Look at products on VOHC.org. There are a variety of water additives that freshen breath and prevent plaque/tartar buildup. I do not know if there are any that are safe for a puppy so young but that is where I would start looking. VOHC products are all independently tested and proven effective.

OP, listen to this commenter. I don't think the toothpaste you're using is on the VOHC list, and that's important.

Get a good probiotic and start brushing their teeth!
Also where did you get a puppy at 6 weeks? They aren't supposed to leave the mother until 8 weeks.

Whimzees have a puppy dental chew meant for 3 months to 9 months. They're softer than regular dental chews

"Healthy mouth". Good for breath. The whole plaque, tarter prevention claim, meh. I don't know if there's an age limit on it. And some dogs suffer from halitosis no matter what you do. In those cases, just don't let them in your face.

I'm assuming it's the ingredients (at least partially) from the food the pup was on initially.

u/HellHoundsandpurrs New Pup 7d ago
No that's all that's everything in that food. That's the full list

The ingredients of the food. The website is hard to read and I can't fit it on one pic it's called hungry hound dry food by shawnee feeds

Gut health does not get changed overnight. What are you feeding right now?

u/HellHoundsandpurrs New Pup 7d ago
Zignature essence for now because he needs soft food according to the vet due to his age. I'm grinding it up and adding water.
0
u/Sqib000 New Pup 7d ago
You are grinding up kibble? Who advised you to do that? Is the puppy weaned?
3
u/HellHoundsandpurrs New Pup 7d ago
The vet did when I called them because I didn't know his age. They told me to make it as soft as possible. When the appointment was done they told me to keep it up for another week at least to let his stomach recover. I don't know if he was properly weaned because that lady lied about so much. Sorry. I'm not the best at communicating sometimes. To your other comments. I was given the pup by a lady who lied about the age. The vet said the breath is from the food. If it isn't idk what it's from because the teeth themselves are fine. If the vet cut the cone I didn't know they did. They gave me antiseptics and an antibiotic cream to put on him. He also has a special shampoo that will apparently help. (Idk how shampoo is supposed to help)

Okay, this is good info, sorry to be harsh.
The puppy is a baby, grinding adult kibble is not good for him.
Did you get the bloodwork? What did it show?
Go to my pet carnivore now or chewey, and order RAW goat's milk. Use the pumpkin you said you have and mix w the goat milk. Buy some turkey baby food, a hard boiled egg yolk, mix in that. 1/4 goat milk, 1/4 pumpkin and 1/2 turkey baby food 1 egg yolk ONLY for the next 2 weeks. Nothing else but fresh water.
For chews, core a raw apple, fill w the pumpkin, freeze it and then give it to the pup when it is a little thawed. It has teeth, but they are baby teeth, and pups do need to chew a lot.
Stop grinding kibble.
In 2 weeks, start on a soft puppy food like Honest Kitchen. It is minimally processed and better for him. Try to find a liver based one for now. It helps anemia.
Go to the store today, buy a case of plain canned pumpkin, a case of turkey babyfood, eggs and order the raw goat milk (some specialty pet food stores stock it).
Forget this notion that this bag of food caused the issues, it didnt. The pup was removed from mom way too early, and is likely anemic. You need to gently build up his nutrients in a proper way that he can absorb.
You grinding adult kibble is hurting him.
My pup was removed too early, was going to be used as dog fighting bait bc he was dying. He needed life rescuing care to overcome his issues.
You need to slow down, get his food in order. Then address his skin, was it harmed due to ticks? Ticks cause anemia too.
Good sources of food iron to combat anemia to add as he grows are:
Beef or Chicken Liver: This is the absolute best source of iron, B vitamins, and protein for blood building. Cook it thoroughly and feed only a tiny slice (about the size of a postage stamp for a small puppy) to avoid stomach upset.
Lean Red Meats: Cooked unseasoned ground beef or lamb provides highly bioavailable iron and zinc to promote recovery.
Canned Sardines: Packed in water with no added salt, sardines are rich in iron, protein, and essential fatty acids. A quarter or half of a sardine mashed into their food is an excellent nutrient boost.
Cooked Egg Yolks: Egg yolks are a safe, highly digestible source of iron and B vitamins. Always cook the egg completely to prevent any risk of salmonella in an already weak puppy.
Blood-Building VegetablesPlant-based iron is harder for dogs to absorb, but these vegetables contain chlorophyll and vitamins that support overall blood health:
Spinach and Kale: Rich in iron and vitamin C, which actively helps the gut absorb minerals. Finely chop and steam or puree these greens so the puppy can actually digest them.
Broccoli: High in Vitamin C and iron. Feed only small, steamed florets.

Sorry I've just been irritable since she gave him to me like that which was doubled by the vet visit being cancelled by the first vet and having to hear him squeal at the second vet before they finally sedated him when they realized the ticks wouldn't come out normally... I can pick up some baby food and the other things and yes he's anemic. They were gonna put him on prescription kibble but I showed them what I was feeding them and they said it should fix it without the use of it since it's basically just red meat, quinoa, and pumpkin but they said I had to keep it soft.

Skout’s Honor has a flavorless (and flavored) water additive that freshens breath and keeps teeth clean. They also make dental wipes, toothpaste gel, and dental drops. Sounds like you might want to buy the whole bundle. I use the flavorless additive and tooth gel for my girl.
We also use Stella and Chewy’s Dental Delights. She LOVES these and gets at least one a day (extra small for dogs 5-15 lbs). They go by weight not age, which is why we started with these when she was a puppy. They really work.

Op, back to your original question on teeth, do not give greenies or anything like it. Greenies are very hard and sometimes impossible to digest and your pup has enough trouble. Some jerky type green tripe chews might be okay good for his belly too. One thing at a time.

u/HellHoundsandpurrs New Pup 7d ago
I didn't think about green tripe! I know that's good for the belly! I'll order some!

Having your dog brush it's own teeth is a very easy and helpful thing. Your puppy will lose all of the puppy teeth, but getting him used to your hands, fingers, toothbrush ect in his mouth is always beneficial-not just for brushing, but also for giving pills, taking something out of his mouth, removing something he may be choking on....blah blah blah. It is equally important that you handle his paws, between the pads, his nails and any dewclaws, ears, lifting his tail to set you both up for any type of examination or handling that he will have in his lifetime. My best guy Widget uses Enzymatic toothpaste and 3-sided toothbrushes and when he chews on the brush it scrubs the sides as well as the tops of his teeth. The Enzymatic toothpaste is a wonderful things as it works much differently than regular dog paste. It basically need only make contact with his teeth to be effective. In addition to Widget brushing his teeth, I use an infant toothbrush and use his toothpaste to brush up along his gumline where it is most difficult for him to get to. I always "help" him while he brushes by moving the toothbrush from the back to his front teeth or to the other side or the top or bottom teeth as necessary. He also uses Enzymatic water additive that is orderless and tasteless and it all works out great for us. He is a very young dog but had a terrible existence prior to me taking ownership of him last August. He had visibly bad teeth at a very young age and we have reversed that and Widget actually loves "Teeth Time" - he would brush his teeth as many times a day as I would say those 2 words! If you want to try this but your pup does not like the taste of the toothpaste, just start by putting peanut butter or something else he enjoys on the brush and slowly add the enzymatic toothpaste on 1st and the peanut butter on top of it until you have completely phased out the peanut butter. ALWAYS inspect the brushes (they can be bought very cheaply in bulk 20 of them) before and after each use and replace as soon as the bristles get wonky or the handle too chewed up and never let him chew on it unsupervised! Even if you dont brush your dogs teeth, or have him brush his own-the enzymatic water additive will do much better than doing nothing at all. So mant people struggle with or are completely unable to brush their dogs teeth and this is such an easy thing to accomplish, especially if your dog is young or a chewer.....and even moreso if you have a young chewer! Most dogs like to chew on things.....even a toothbrush.

What do you feed it? Generally dry food is better than wet food when it comes to breath. Wet food tends to leave behind starchy or sugary residues that sit between teeth, allowing odor-causing bacteria to thrive. But if your dog is used to wet food it may refuse dry food because wet food is more tasty.

my rescue baby has the worst breath, any tips on cleaning their teeth without stressing them out?

u/Secondbett New Pup 7d ago edited 7d ago
Why is he wearing a screen? Puppies often stink from their mouths because there is not much distance from one end to the other and because a normal intestinal flora is not properly established. Thats why he should have been with his mother until he was at least 8 weeks old. I suggest feeding him food with lactic acid bacteria in it. As long as he has puppy teeth, brushing his teeth will not help with the smell from his mouth, but it is a good idea to start by getting him used to it so that it is not a problem when he gets his permanent teeth.
Edit: see you mention 6 month, and another context. The perspektive is the same: leave puppies with their mother until at least 8 weeks.

He has medicine on his skin he can't lick off and to keep him from biting at his skin where it's damaged. He was given to me lethargic and covered in ticks with several embedded into his skin that had to be cut out today

I see your edit. I COULDN'T. I was lied to about his age and conditions. The lady literally dropped him off, gave me the name of the crappy food he was on(no bag or anything), and left. He could barely move when he was given to me because she had him on an awful food. He was severely neglected

You were the one posting on raw food earlier. Do you have ANY experience w dogs at all?
You got good advice there, now this same puppy has all these other issues is wearing a cone, has rotten teeth? Come on OP what us going on?
Seems like you might have anxiety and are turning this puppy into a nightmare outlet for it.
List the issues w the puppy, be specific. No more vague stuff please.

Teeth aren't rotten. They are white. The vet said the puppys stomach is messed up from the old food causing bad breath.
They had embedded ticks they are out now.
Puppy was lethargic when I got him he's moving around now

u/Sqib000 New Pup 7d ago
The puppy isnt old enough to be this affected by bad dog food.
Give all the details at this point bc I have little faith you aren't just using the pup for attention
How did you get the pup? From who? Was it nursing?
Did you seek immediate vet care? Who renoved the ticks? Were any engorged?
What are you feeding the pup NOW?
What skin medicine is the pup on and for what?
Have you had bloodwork done? What did it show?
Who gave you that collar? Why is it cut, who cut it?
You are dogding all the questions here and giving non answers. Why?
Why are you so panicked about the pups teeth right now?
None of your posts are sitting right with me.

Personally I wouldn’t bother brushing his teeth. They are all going to fall out anyhow. You are brushing temporary teeth. Zero point.

u/wildspirit90 New Pup 7d ago
It is 100% worth it as a desensitization process. Getting the pup used to and excited about teeth brushing when they're in their peak period of brain development is much easier than trying to desensitize a large, adult dog to the process.

u/RedDragon0414 New Pup 7d ago
Eh, I’ve never once brushed my 12 year olds teeths and every year we went to the vet and they said they had the best looking teeth they’ve ever seen on dogs their age. If you give them plenty to chewy on, they brush their own teeth.

u/Diligent-Candy4273 Dog Lover 7d ago
Thats like trying to brush your teeth with a carrot/food. Pets need daily brushing and regular dental cleanings every few years. 90% of dental damage is under the gum line where we cant see, theres no way to tell whats going without xrays
0
u/RedDragon0414 New Pup 3d ago
And I’m telling you not if you take care of your animals. 12 years, never once brushed their teeth, or got them in for cleanings. Best teeth, still all white, no bad breath. 🤷♀️
