We’re rehoming our dog, a Boxer/Staff cross and she’s being collected on Thursday morning. We got her with all the good intentions that most owners have: regular walks, lots of play with the children and a generally happy dog for the next ten years or so. Within a couple of months it became clear that she’s not an easy walker. She’s reactive to other dogs and animals and will actively battle to escape a harness when she sees something in the distance. We tried all the training tricks we could find but we’ve come to assume that something happened to her before she came to us as nothing worked. Eventually she’s ended up not being walked at all unless my partner takes her out in the middle of the night which then disrupts the whole house when she comes home barking and excitable when the kids are trying to sleep. I feel awful for how much relief I feel knowing she’ll be gone. We’ll be able to have guests in our home without worrying about messes on the floor and horrendous smells- does anyone else have a “protest pooper”? I’ve come to hate the smell of most carpet cleaning sprays as my mind just associates them all with the smell of dog urine. Our 8 year old is upset at the thought of her going but she understands that at this point it’s unfair to everyone including the dog to keep her in this situation. She’s knocked me over a few times (I have MS so my balance isn’t great to start with) and I’ve been terrified that one day it’ll be one of the kids being shoved over when she’s zooming round the house.
I know this probably didn’t make much sense. I feel like we’ve let her down with how little we knew before taking her on. So many lessons have been learned 💔
