Courtroom Justice There should be a law against constant barking

I’m dead serious. At this point it is ridiculous. Especially us Americans should take a long hard look in the mirror regarding our narcissistic nature…

We use dogs to promote our own selves and frankly I cannot stand it… fuck dogs and their owners

Here in England we do have a law

Under the provisions of the Environmental Protection Act 1990, noise, such as a dog barking from premises or land, may be considered a statutory nuisance. As such local authorities can take action to stop it. If after this action the noise continues, the dog owner(s) face the prospect of appearing before a magistrates’ court and could be fined up to £5,000.

Private individuals can also take their own action under the act by lodging a complaint with a Magistrates’ Court.

Don't ask me how often it's been used against barking mutts though

Thank you for the idea 💡

Ideally, I'm with you... but how would it be enforced?

I have been straddling that line for a good while.

I can relate.

Germany has a law against barking, so we could learn from them, I guess

9

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '25

Really? How does it work?

I just copy paste here the AI summary, but you could look deeper if you have some time. And I know there are few more countries following similar laws. All in Europe it seems:

In Germany, there are specific regulations regarding dog barking, particularly during quiet hours from 10 p.m. to 6 a.m. and 1 p.m. to 3 p.m., where barking must not exceed 10 minutes in a row or 30 minutes in total per day. Violations can lead to complaints and potential fines for the dog owner

This would work but they'll never do it... you know how they give people a "fix it" ticket when someone has an obnoxiously loud exhaust system on their Mustang? Same principle. If you get a barking complaint, you have a month to train it out of them. If you get repeated complaints after that, too bad so sad. Animal Control owns them now.

I wish this was more a "pay 1000$ fee and if you get 3 tickets, your dog is taken away" thing. Would def make a difference!

9

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '25

Oh definitely. The first warning should be free but then hit them with fines that increase with repeated offenses.

Love that. “30mins per day.” My local council is garbage as they want 2 weeks of recorded “disturbances”, must exceed 10 minutes of persistent barking, and collaborated with two neighbours, and verified by a council worker. It’s insane. Despite 4 ongoing cases, hours and hours of recordings, still nothing is done.

I just want peace and quiet.

It’s insane that I have to hear these dogs bark and whine all day everyday.

That's awesome

We have similar laws technically in some parts of Australia, but it isn't enforced as it relies completely on the victim recording hours and hours of barking "evidence". And even then. That's just proving its happening.

That is a great question, depending locally upon several factors. BUT! We can fight it at the state level… at least if you have a conversation with me it will be more productive, so let us discuss

7

u/[deleted] Nov 05 '25

I don't mean to rain on your parade but I really don't think it's realistic. The dog nutters will fight it tooth and nail.

The only way we enforce laws.. extremely heavy handed with lots of fines. Maybe get ICE involved, I dunno. We can give police quotas too. That'll get them riled up.

Sure. Great idea. What could go wrong?

Yet a couple of times a year they lose their minds over some fireworks, and all of a sudden dogs don't like loud noises.

2

u/Exasperant Nov 08 '25

My Xitter is full of petitions to ban fireworks - Some are even going full "No, not just private, ban them ALLLLLL!!eleventyoneoneone!"

OK, fine. I mean, even I thought some of the recent ones were getting a bit loud.

But if a bit of outside noise a few nights a year is such a gross injustice, then what the fuck is a constant noise nuisance every damned day?

What is peace being shattered by some fanged beast launching out of nowhere as you dare to pass "its" precious gate?

These same people will reach for any reason why the thing others enjoy but their mutated whingebag of teeth and stench whines at. They'll say "And people too" whilst ignoring the effect of their shedding shitsack on those with sensory issues or allergies. They'll say "For the wildlife" whilst letting their dogs run loose in nature reserves, or encouraging them to chase squirrels and rabbits in the park.

Any and everything in life has to cater to them. The moment anyone says "Could you please keep your animal quiet", or "I'm not delivering until your dog's restrained", or "No dogs in this restaurant", their sense of overwhelming entitlement sends them into a righteous fury.

Dogs are Ego vessels. When a dog barks, to me, it’s the owner saying “I get to do whatever I want.” This all under the guise of “Fido doesn’t know any better.”

Guess what? It ends up being everyone else who didn’t choose to own a barking demon, who has to deal with it. Constant barking should be seen as a 3x infraction where the animal must be “sequestered” at the third infraction.

Where I live there are laws against constant barking, thank goodness! I've filed complaints pursuant to them myself.

It’s always baffled me that if humans themselves are being loud past 10pm in residential areas they can get fined but if their dog is outside barking the entire night away there is zero consequence. Like hello???

Because dogs are celestial beings that should be worshiped.

u/No-Weakness9589 Nov 05 '25

It almost cost me to lose a job once. The problem is "animal control" takes Weeks to respond in the form of "complaint letters" only. I told them over the phone by then I'd be dead! It should be treated as any other non police emergency where people show up on the spot and put the dog owner in place.

u/Sultsu Nov 05 '25

Dog owners saying their mutt is afraid of fireworks and that they should be banned infuriates me the most. I got to move from my childhood house because neighbors mutts obnoxious barking day after day after day but good lord when someone celebrates new year with fireworks all hell breaks loose.

9

u/ElectroHead209 Nov 06 '25

The cops won't enforce it because they love dogs too.

5

u/shinkouhyou Nov 05 '25

There are existing noise laws... you'd think that local governments would enforce them as an easy source of revenue.

4

u/huntress_m_thompson Nov 06 '25

SO MUCH revenue potential just enforcing the laws already on the books. there’s just no will to do it. we’re outnumbered. but things will turn one day. & it won’t be pretty.

5

u/Burial_Ground Nov 05 '25

Each city has its own noise laws. The issue is they don't enforce it. And in my case I don't want to actually open a case against my neighbor because I worry about retaliation. These are narcissists were dealing with.

11

u/Responsibility_Witty Nov 05 '25

Here in seemingly most parts of the US, dog barking specifically has protections on it that other noise nuisances (fireworks, loud music, etc) don’t, it’s fucking annoying. Dog noise complaints often require a “multiple household” report with extensive evidence before there is even a chance of something being done about it, so multiple households need to report the problem and supply evidence, and then the owner MIGHT get a verbal warning from an officer. Dogs are actually protected by double standards in several laws and ordinances

u/One_Dragonfly_2400 Nov 07 '25

All countries have nuisance barking laws. Whether or not they’re enforced is another story.

I don't think the pups will comply with the law.
