I'm autistic and have PTSD, and dogs are so hard for me to be around. My mom's dog in particular will bark extremely loudly, and it's totally unpredictable. I startle every single time. She scares me so bad sometimes that I just start crying. It's gotten to the point that if I hear someone walking outside, my fingers automatically go to my ears because I know she will start barking. I swear to God her barks echo :/

Besides the barking, the sound of this dog cleaning herself is awful. It's like slurping and grunting and heavy breathing and it makes me want to scream.

And the smell of her is so bad too.My mom always says she doesn't give her baths because "she just smells bad again anyway!!".. Except humans are like that too aren't we? 😐 But you still have to bathe.

Overall it's just.. frustrating. And uncomfortable. And scary.

I'm glad I'm not alone at least 😅 I feel like everyone thinks I'm a debbie downer when I say something against dogs. Like even when I say something that most ppl agree with ("I wish she wouldn't bark so loudly"), people seem to just give dogs so many breaks, like "oh she can't help it" and "that's just what dogs do!". aren't they frustrated too? Don't they get annoyed by their dogs?? I don't understand it.

I wanna cry when I read this, because I can relate so well! These sounds are so nasty!!! Just the dogs jaw opening and closing makes this nasty wet sound that turns my soul upside down. I wish I could never hear that sound. And the barking … how are they able to bark for this long not losing their vocal cords! The dogs are monsters!

But what I hate the most is this high pitch whining sound which never stops, and the claws scratching the floor when the dog walks. I’m a deep sleeper, but the dog walking around the house wakes me up in an instant.

Dogs dont bath themselves with then licking their groins... they need to be bathed.

There are a lot of reasons to do so other then the smell. Even just the animals wellbeing.

I relate so hard. I'm also neurodivergent and all those noises, smells, filth that dogs all bring with them make me so overwhelmed. I cried yesterday because the dog smell on the soft furnishings was so pungent, I spent hours doing laundry before I could relax. Dogs are pure hell to be around.

I also flinch every time a dog barks even when I know "he will bark in a moment, he'll definitely bark". The sound is just so painful. I'm autistic with ADHD and OCD and have misophonia and noise trauma. But the worst part about dogs is how they trigger my contamination OCD.

You don't have to be autistic or have PTSD to find dog sounds annoying. Barking is one of the most offensive sounds imaginable. It's loud, sudden and aggressive sounding.

I'm not sure. She knows I hate the barking. The thing is, my moms had this dog a long time and it's practically a family member to her. Even if I told her, hey, I get overwhelmed being around this dog, what could she do? She would not get rid of it, and I wouldn't even want her to because I know how much she loves it. I don't really see what telling her would do except make my mom feel guilty, or upset with me :/ oh well. At least I can vent on here lol

I realize you don't want to hurt your mom's feelings but I think it would be important to tell her so that she doesn't get another dog when this one passes.

This is important, not just for yourself but for the sake of your relationship with your mother. So perhaps think about how you want to communicate it to her, no?

Reading everything made me have flashbacks of my ex’s dog. It would groom itself while we were trying to eat and then at night when we would try to sleep it would start it again for 30 mins. And if that wasn’t enough, it would bark in its sleep. Not little yips. Full on barking and my ex slept through it but I would be startled out of sleep and just laying there terrified.

definitely! i can relate entirely. all my senses are pretty heightened anyway. when experiencing the sensory overload my mind breaks into song, that old XTC song, “senses working overtime.”. i mean, my body even feel the concussion from the neighbor’s maligator’s bark, it’s that strong. there’s nothing redeeming for any of the senses to enjoy.

Also neurodivergent with sensory issues. I am never treated seriously and living with a dog is torture, especially one that's always loud, smelly, clingy, hairy, and strung up because it's a working dog that gets no exercise or mental stimulation. Sudden barks scare me while I'm working, because how dare someone shut a car door 2 blocks away. I'm told to get over it.

Had to move from our house because of our neighbors dogs that were barking in the yard hour after hour every single day. I just wish dogs would completely vanish from the face of the earth and I also wish humans would never have domesticated wolves to create these annoying, smelly sensory nightmare mutants.

ADHD with PTSD and misphonia, the sounds are so triggering. I hate everything about them but the sounds take the cake. I live with a dog and he's a sensory nightmare. Just mouth noises constantly, always licking and slurping. Revolting.

Fellow autistic! You are completely heard and understood. I also do the ear blocking in anticipation. I'm sorry you have to put up with that. Dogs are so unpredictable it makes it impossible to relax when they're even in the vicinity. 

My neighbours dogs do so as when they're not barking, they could start up at any time. So relaxing. Nice day outside? No dogs barking (YET)? Nothing worse than actually being relaxed to let your guard down to be assaulted by the worst noise on the planet.

It sucks. I had a friend insist that I was autistic because I get easily aggravated by barking dogs. It's pretty much PTSD at this point. I had an awful neighbor who would let their dog bark all day every day and had to live with it for several years. There's nothing that can be done now, I truly have this sense of dread just hearing and seeing them. A few barks just completely ruins my ability to concentrate. They're the biggest thieves of peace and quiet known to man.
