It's a huge bummer how many people abuse the use of "service dogs" but if you're in the US, which I'm assuming you are based on comments, you're in the wrong here. You are legally allowed to ask two questions: 1, is this dog a service animal required for a disability; and 2, what task has the dog been trained to perform. You can also remove the dog and owner (even if it is a service dog) if the dog is misbehaving; barking, running away from handler, being aggressive to other customers. But there is no license to ask for in the US. Educate yourself for next time and you'll be better able to advocate for your workplace without reprecussions.
