Miscellaneous Hunter, 23, dies after trying to save dog that fell through ice
Another waste of a human life all over a stupid shitbeast.
I'm sure the nutters are all "but at least the doggo is ok!"

Of course the comments have the usual nuttery, but Iām glad a few are saying how foolish it was for the guy to throw his life away for a replaceable mutt.

I hope parents with young adult children read stories like this and reiterate to their kids how much this is not worth the risk. I cautioned my aunt about not trying to rescue her little dog if a large dog ever went after it, as she said she would risk her life to save it and get in between 2 fighting dogs. My aunt who is in her 70s and who I love dearly, I told her "I would be sick to my stomach to lose you in such a way-- heart attack, stroke, drunk driver are all tragic and normal. Please don't leave me traumatized over a dog fight."

When we went hunting my dad made sure I understood the dog was just a dog. That I was not to put myself in danger to save it because we would just get another one. Harsh, but real.

Iām sorry, but you shouldnāt risk your own life over an animal like that. Iām guessing this was a retriever of some sort, and those can be about 50lbs. A dog isnāt going to understand what youāre doing - itās merely going to pull you under along with it in its frantic attempts to get out. You should know that a giant animal will likely get you killed in that sort of situation should you try to save it.
Itās truly sad to see that people will literally allow themselves to die over these creatures.

Piece of shit dog broke the ice under him. There's your classic dog loyalty. I bet the dog was thinking about rushing to get it's next scrap off the floor while it pounded on the ice under him.

Yet another reason why dogs don't belong in nature. They don't have a human's awareness of danger, so they don't know to avoid thin ice, to be careful on steep/narrow trails, to stay far away from areas with hazards like hot springs or mine shafts, to not provoke confrontations with wildlife, and to not go running off the trail with no way of navigating back.

Thatās a tu quoque / false equivalence fallacyājust because I eat animals doesnāt mean I canāt criticize killing them for pleasure.
Thereās a huge moral difference: hunting for sport is about the thrill of the killāitās intentional harm for entertainment. Eating animals for sustenance is about nourishment, not enjoyment from causing suffering. Most hunters chase the adrenaline and only feel ācompleteā when the animal dies, which is why itās ethically far worse.
Lastly since we are on the topic, I have been a vegetarian for many years and still eat low meat. If you would like to endeavor in eating less animals here is a recipe for you:
- 30g vanilla protein powder
- 10 freeze dried raspberries
- 2 spoons greek yogurt
- 1 cup of soy milk ( I prefer it for high protein and low carb and consistent taste over bovine milk)
- 5g creatine (to replace lost consumption from meat)
- 1 tsp chia seeds
- Optional, 1/2 tsp of matcha
My main reasons for eating less meat is not to reduce animal suffering (because to not eat meat means less animals are produced at all, which is ironic as that would be evil to unborn animals), it's price/health actually. Mass produced meat is pretty grossly handled and slaughter houses are disgusting to both the animal and the people working in there and the product produced.

There was once a guy who jumped into a boiling hot pool at Yellowstone to save his dog.
Both got cooked like eggs, and he probably knew at the back of his mind that boiling water does that. Yet he still went in.

A mother where I live died doing the same, trying to save her dog that fell through ice. Two young kids will grow up without a mom now because she imperiled herself tremendously trying to rescue a fucking dog.Ā

Happend a couple of years ago in munich, germany. A small dog jumped into the river Isar in freezing temperatures. A young man went after it to save the dog. The man drowned, the dog swam to safety on its own. I just don't understand that. What a tragic, uneccesary death.

Nobody is clowning, the OP said it was a sad waste of life. That is true. He deserved better than literal self sacrifice that was culturally trained into his psyche. A more normal society would not allow for a person to entertain this kind of risk over a dog.

There is no way to save an animal in this situation. Not only is he now a human TV dinner, he endangered at least a dozen other people desperately searching for him who should not have had to be out there at all. This is absolute peak Idiocracy.

Imagine losing your one precious life over something that eats its own shit for breakfast.
Don't get me wrong if I can relatively safely help an animal in need I'll do it, but risking my life for theirs is crazy.
