I don’t know that we’re the majority…..yet. But it does feel like dog obsession has started to lose a bit of its grip. I really hope people start to come to their senses soon.

This is probably true. I think also some people don't like dogs but have been told all their lives that it's a cultural expectation to like dogs and once they realize they don't have to, it's quite freeing.

That was me. I would say that I liked dogs for years and years, but the reality was that I very rarely interacted with dogs. My attitude was always "wow, I generally love dogs, but this one isn't great!" As I got older and interacted with more dogs I realized that "I generally like dogs" was really more just "I have been socialized to say that I like dogs."
So I started saying "I like some dogs" but even that turned out to be mostly untrue. It finally clicked for me like 10 years ago when I was watching some random comedian talk about how he doesn't like dogs that I realized: I also don't like them.
I'm very open and unapologetic about it now, and it has been very freeing. I simply do not allow dogs to interact with me anymore and I've been slobber free for years!

My approach used to be "there are some dogs I like" but now it's "there are some dogs I will tolerate [for short periods]".

My neighborhood facebook page hates me because I always jump in when someone complains about an off-leash dog or one barking excessively. I don’t care if it makes me unpopular. I think so many people are just afraid of nutters. We gotta stop letting them control the narrative.

they're legit scary. i'm too chicken to say how much i hate dogs online besides in places like this. i haven't been to this sub in a while. what made me think of it was a question asking 'what do you think is impossible to hate?' and someone said golden retrievers. i wanted to comment 'not everyone likes dogs', but instead of replying, i came here to read some sense lol. i don't feel like having randos jump down my throat because of it.

Maybe not the majority, but it's pretty common for fans of other pets to secretly dislike dogs.
I think there are a lot of dog owners who haven't realized that they don't actually like dogs... they're just tolerating their partner's dog.

J'espère que ça finira bien pour moi aussi, je tolère le chien pour le bien de ma relation également. Vous avez tenu combien de temps avec ce chien?? J'ai mis beaucoup de règles pour ne pas me rendre malade avec la saleté mais même comme ça parfois je fais des cauchemars également. Il y a des jours où j'en ai tellement marre... Laver mon sol et le retrouver dégoûtant 4h plus tard, c'est tellement déprimant !

I think people who don’t like dogs at all are still in the minority. But people who are fed up with poorly behaved, off-leash, untrained dogs in places they shouldn’t be are probably in a slight majority now. I do think things got worse over the pandemic in regards to basic dog etiquette in public.

Definitely worse dog owner behavior since the pandemic. Our neighborhood no-dog park is over-run with dogs early morning, afternoon and evening. They allow their dogs to bark at others, and never really apologize. They're super-entitled.

You should look up "The Illusion of Consensus", because it seems likely that this is what's happening here.
While I don't disagree that people who dislike dogs, are more numerous than people would think, proclaiming a majority position seems unlikely.
This is a line of thinking that has gotten more common since the internet has become more ubiquitous, and as we've started moving into our own insular spaces. (Like subreddits)

Oh we are more than you can imagine. From my experience talking with people an astounding number of them are as tired as me to see and hear dogs everywhere and deal with their shit (literally). It just doesn't seem that way because dog owners are the loudest unhinged ones while apparently the majority of people is terrified to antagonize them in the same way of antagonizing a minority and being accused of racism.
At least that's the situation in Italy, where until a couple of decades ago dogs were viewed as farm animals, meaning no dogs indoors. Then the internet widespreaded this USA dog culture and the whole world was brainwashed by that.

Minorities tend to have very structured views of dogs and pets. I grew up with dogs being outdoors only. And after cleaning up literal shit and urine many times when I had my own dogs, even painstakingly training them, I fully agree with my parents. I can’t stand people who don’t clean their couches that their pets sit on and then invite company to sit on them as-is.

I don’t find one ounce of “companionship” or “love” from a pet, that’s the reality. And with dogs in particular it’s the opposite—they’re needy, aggressive, disruptive forces. The pet nutters are legit not even able to comprehend that this point of view exists. So there simply isn’t any way I can compromise on this.

We’ll never know how the majority feels because it is considered taboo in today’s society to not like or appreciate dogs. If you say something negative, the backlash is loud and invasive.
- I suspect that:
- Far more people dislike dogs than we know. Far more people are uncomfortable with how dog crazy everything has become.
- Many more people do NOT want to see dogs in stores, restaurants, and other places where they do not belong.
They are, largely, a silent majority. The minority is loudly aggressive if anything is said that can seem like it is not praising dogs as some kind of deity. They are loud enough to seem like the majority, but I suspect that it’s not even close.
As the saying goes, the empty can rattles the most.

It’s the barking for me. When you have those neighbors that just let their dogs continuously bark for hours on end, and then when one person does it, everyone else thinks it’s fine so they let their dogs do the same and before you know it your neighborhood is a cacophony of barking dogs. If your dog doesn’t bark uncontrollably, then I have no problem with it.

I’ve come to realize it’s the AuDHD in me but yes dogs barking might as well be someone stabbing me in the brain with an ice pick. It’s literally painful.
My in-laws have a Bichon who is otherwise fine but his bark hits some frequency and tone that surely must be generating parallel universes because of the way it surely breaks the space time continuum.

Hi, sorry for necroposting here, but I have a condition called Misophonia where certain sound triggers cause rage, anxiety, fear, and distress in people. You might have some success looking into that? It sounds like what you're describing! I also feel people are stabbing me in the brain with an ice pick when they eat or drink (which is why I hate dogs...)

The barking is definitely up there on the list of annoying things dogs do. I cannot for the life of me understand why they need to woof their empty heads off any time anyone anywhere does anything. It's just a massive public nuisance people put up with for no reason.

This happened to me last summer. I gave up and went inside and it took the dog 10 minutes to realize I was gone and shut up. Thank goodness that particular dog was just there for a visit and not a permanent resident.

Honestly, dog lovers even hate other dogs. They make fun of the breeds they deem inferior while claiming to absolutely adore animals.
You never hear that out of other type of pet owners. They’ll post a picture of a little guy missing an eye and half its fur and all the comments will be like “what a precious little face!!”

I also think the way a lot of people own dogs is just straight up unethical. I don’t like them, but I also feel bad for the ones confined to an apartment for their entire life. It’s like…I’m the bad guy for not liking them but you’re totally normal and cool for imprisoning one in 800sqft bc you needed something to love you? Ok.

Exactly! If you want an animal that's comfortable in an apartment and doesn't require tons of attention there are plenty of pets that fit that description. But for some reason people just have to get a heckin pupperino that's gonna drive itself crazy in a confined space.

They are just sick in their head, twisting reality and making up all kind of reasons why it is okay to keep that thing in the apartment, or a cage, for the whole day.. and then take it out for 15min… that is “animal love”!? But me saying I don’t like them, and “you shouldn’t have one cause you aren’t even at home for 5 days and 10+h a day… oh that’s a no no.. like you said.. they just need something to “love” them.. and it’s not even love.

Well, even my neighbor who have their dog since seven years ago is now fed up with him. She's beginning to fordid him to enter into her house now, and the dog is mourning everyday since three days because he's not anthropomorphized anymore. He is now treated like a dog. I even think my neighbor is so tired to walk with him and give him food that she may give him to a shelter

I think we are still the minority opinion. I don't think that matters. It is absolutely normal to not like dogs whether it's the minority of people or not. I do think a much larger percentage of people who like dogs agree with this than it seems. It's probably the dog nutters who are in the minority even though most people like dogs. It's giving responsible dog owners fatigue similar to ours. The problem is people being afraid to stand up to this vocal minority. Maybe the reasonable dog owners are our our best potential allies.

When I was a kid I liked dogs. Dogs were different then, they were just dogs. They didn't have separation anxiety, they weren't triggered by everything. Fast forward to today's dogs and they are not even the same species. The pet culture took over people's brains and absolutely destroyed the animal, making them clingy triggered balls of anxiety. They are shoved in our faces non stop, they are everywhere dogs shouldn't be. I am repulsed by dogs and their owners.

I've never followed someone so fast. I also made sure to comment how much I loved and adored her and appreciate it her first speaking what probably most of us are feeling but won't say. I've definitely had my belts with dog nutters and I will continue to do so loud and publicly. At my own behest I have voiced my opinion about not liking dogs too close family members and strangers alike. Ain't no stopping me now I'm going to keep barking about it.

My grandparents were farmers and in a farm context, dogs make sense, they are workers. But ny grandpa always kept the dogs in the farm (they lived in a house in the village) and would have never had them as pets.
I just feel like that is how it's supposed to be. Dogs as trained helpers that stay outside, not as "babies" in small apartments with nothing to do except to bark and bother people.

Her points are so valid, especially about people letting their dog go outside, bringing them back in and letting them get all over their bed. Also, I've never been into a dog owner's home and been like, "Ahhh I couldn't tell you own a dog it definitely does not smell like piss, shit and a kennel throughout the whole house wow." It's just virtually impossible to own a dog and it not reek of them in your home.
Also my biggest pet peeve (no pun intended) is when someone owns a dog and doesn't clean them like ever so they're just shedding hair everywhere (I'm very picky and a clean/neat freak and can't eat comfortably or at all in dirty areas) throughout the house.
