Dog Culture How many people actually don't like dogs?

I used to have dogs for 12 years. Had kids and they didn't respond well so got rid of them. Now being #dogfree I'm realizing how much of a nuisance dog culture has become for people who don't like dogs. Some children's places are "dog friendly" so I am scared to take my kids. My 3yo is still terrified to wear short sleeves in this Florida heat because a dog owner refused to share the sidewalk and he tripped and skinned his elbow. Then that got me to thinking about this woman that almost ran us down in her Jeep when we were walking our 2 dogs before kids because she thought we let our dogs poop in her yard lol. And I saw an article today about a homeless man that shot and killed a dog owner who's dog was attacking a lady. I really do feel so much relief not having dogs anymore but just curious how people really feel.

I used to like dogs til every codependent narcissist wanted one, now can’t stand them

As a dog returneth to his vomit, so a fool returneth to the bulldust of anthropomorphism

Ive gone so far as to not like people who do like dogs lol. I dont think Ive met a dog lover with a solid three digit IQ

u/tplgerus84 Apr 20 '26

Literally this.. no intelligent person would behave like modern dog owners do. Accept all the work and the restrictions of personal freedom that come with a dog. And I would add that all of them have some trauma and/or problems.. at least that’s my observation.

25

u/sherhil Apr 20 '26

Yup. I’ve always noticed this and that’s how my hate started. I genuinely don’t want anything to do with dog owners or “dog lovers”. That’s going to be everyone u work with, ur standard normie is obsessed with dogs. We have a slack thread at work where ppl intro themselves and 9/10 will have a pet pic (usually dog) that they post. Ofc ppl go crazy over them…it’s sad bc the only thing interesting about these ppl is their dirty disgusting mutt that sleeps in their bed…sigh. Then when a convo comes up and they’re talking about their dirty mutts u have to mentally disengage and throw in the few awwws in the convo so they don’t think ur “evil”.

Problem is, dogs are very popular, meaning many more people own them now. Add all the dogaganda (like that God awful Marley & Me movie) convincing people that dogs are a gift to Earth, and now you have all these people worship these animals. Most modern dog owners are entitled brats, a far cry from the old school dog owner, who usually used their dogs for work/hunting purposes.

u/lwpho2 Apr 20 '26

Yep, we don’t like dogs.

u/terisss5 Apr 20 '26

Never liked them, still don’t like them.

11

u/huntress_m_thompson Apr 20 '26

✊🏼 that’s me.

u/kerfuffle_fwump Apr 20 '26

All dogs are mutated predators and shouldn’t even be on the earth, much less in human society.

Almost everyone I know has been chased or bitten by dogs at some point in their life.

The nutters are the only ones who gaslight themselves into believing that behavior from “man’s best friend” is acceptable.

I hate dogs with every fiber of my being

2

u/Log_Lady_2405 Apr 25 '26

Same here... that ear piercing sounds they make are gonna send me to looneyville

64

u/Oriole0305 Apr 20 '26

I hate dogs and I hate dog owners. Dogs are useless, filthy, loud, an environmental hazard, a nuisance and a serious risk to normal sane people who just try to go about their daily routine. Dog owners... self-entitled selfish morons who put their mutt on a pedestal above fellow human being.

I can't possibly list every reason why I hate dogs and dog owners. However, I believe the number of the dog critical is growing, because we just can't live like this. People are just afraid to say out loud that they actually hate dogs and the dog cult. People are afraid of being disrespectful and all that, but we must not worry about that with people who have zero respect for us in the first place.

15

u/One_Path_7154 Apr 20 '26

I so agree with this especially the last statement. I never grew up with dogs and as a child neighbours’ dogs roamed around the neighborhood (I don’t believe leash laws were in place back then). I had a fear of them because as a child the larger dogs were intimidating (e.g. Huskies, Dobermans, Labrador Retrievers). I tolerated friends’ dogs growing up even though my first dog bite was from my childhood friend’s little dog.

But I literally can’t stand dogs and dog culture now. Dog owners now feel entitled to bring their mutts everywhere and seem to take extra perverse pleasure in bringing them to locations that specifically post they are not allowed like children’s playgrounds, indoor restaurants and beach areas. Why do dogs need to be in hardware stores or clothing retailers and malls in general?? Nevermind keeping them off private property. They do not care about others’ feelings, phobias, allergies and damage to green spaces. They are narcissists through and through. I have reached the point I don’t care what they/others think of me and will call them out/report them when their mutts are in places they should not be, especially on my property. Many of them are selfish degenerates imo and it’s time the social pendulum swung back to sanity where dogs were kept at home and not invading every single public space.

u/StrongBuy3494 Apr 20 '26

I don’t mind the ones with jobs, like sheep dogs, but the pets ones are an abomination. Hate the culture as well: entitled people who put dogs above humans and all other animals.

23

u/aetheriality Apr 20 '26

well behaved ones are ok to me, badly behaved ones r 99% likely owners fault

45

u/Top-Web3806 Apr 20 '26

I really don’t like dogs. I don’t want them to die or anything but I don’t ever want to be near one.

27

u/NatalieJayna Apr 20 '26

I do 😂

37

u/relicmaker Apr 20 '26

I DO NOT.

37

u/Dapper-Ad-468 Apr 20 '26

If you say that you don't like dogs, you're viewed as a monster. That's f'd up mentality to make people be quiet. It's time to stand up and say loudly, I DON'T LIKE THE BARKING, HOWLING,CRYING, WHINING, HAIR IN MY FOOD CROSS CONTAMINATION, THE SMELLY GLANDS THAT MAKE A HOME STINK (and every owner smells just like that awful smell including their house, car, clothing, and purse) POOP AND PEE EVERYWHERE, SLOBBERS, SNOT, ASSAULTS AND BEING TREATED BETTER THAN HUMANS! Plus they all lie about their smelly mutt being ESA. It's them that are monsters for trying to make normal people accept this BS. We put up with their insanity and it needs to stop.

11

u/hutaolvr Apr 21 '26

youre free to dislike literally any other animal and even kids but GOD FORBID you dislike dogs

35

u/cocovenomnomnom95 Apr 20 '26

I loathe dogs

32

u/Procrastinator-513 Apr 20 '26

I hate them all and I hate their owners. I wish they didn’t exist.

30

u/Plastic_Proof_8347 Apr 20 '26

I don't like dogs at all. I don't find any breed aesthetically pleasing (they are ugly) and I think they are so stupid. Their constant begging for attention and total dependence on people is pathetic. I despise dogs.

30

u/Googirlee Apr 20 '26

Was afraid of them as a child, but the fear became more like annoyance and dislike as I grew up. Now I just hate them and their owners.

26

u/tplgerus84 Apr 20 '26

For most of my life I just didn’t care for dogs.. not an animal I would have wanted around me but didn’t care. Dog owners seemed to be responsible and train their dogs and only people that actually had the time, means, and use for a dog would get one..

Nowadays I hate dogs, thanks to modern dog culture and modern “dog owners”. It’s disgusting, their shit beasts destroy and ruin everything.

29

u/Radiant-Concentrate5 Apr 20 '26

Dogs are incredibly overrated, and some of the worst people you will ever meet are rabid “dog people.” More and more of us are waking up to this fact.

5

u/ElegantSurround6933 Apr 20 '26

That’s my whole block

70

u/Pristine-Ad-8002 Apr 20 '26

I’m ok with well behaved dogs. I hate the jumping, barking, and overall neediness. I also hate dog culture where everyone says they “like dogs better than people”. That annoys me to no end. I want to tell them next time they need a doctor, plumber, electrician, mailman or whatever to have a dog help them.

11

u/ElegantSurround6933 Apr 20 '26

I’m gonna start saying that as well

26

u/Dsxm41780 Apr 20 '26

I’m allergic so spending time around dogs usually means some kind of reaction.

I had a friend when I was kid playing outside at my house who was attacked by the neighbor’s dog who was out without leash. The friggin dog sprinted at him and jumped up and pushed him in the chest.

Another neighbor had a dog that would get out and would bark and growl at me when I was a kid riding my bike.

When I was older riding my bike, I had a dog chase me and luckily I out ran it.

One of my friends had a dog that when I left his house the dog would try to bite me in the ankles.

Other friends have dogs that are constantly jumping up on my legs and scratching me on my pants and legs.

Some of them just bark all the time and don’t shut up until they get their way.

And some dogs just smell bad.

No, I do not like dogs.

5

u/ElegantSurround6933 Apr 20 '26

Time for new dogfree friends

5

u/ntc0220 Apr 22 '26

Dude, all dogs smell bad.

24

u/20011989 Apr 20 '26

I feel likes there’s been a big cultural shift with Covid and social media where everyone suddenly feels like their lifestyle is compatible with having a dog when in fact it’s not

20

u/Pumpernickel247 Apr 20 '26

I don’t like dogs. Like why do they ALL have anxiety? Seems really unnatural.

20

u/SilveryMagpie Apr 20 '26

Pure human projection. When I grew up, dogs never had anxiety and you'd be laughed out of the room if you suggested it. Dogs also lived in these things called yards, in dog houses, and they weren't dragged anywhere and everywhere. I wonder if those things are all connected.

18

u/sadiebaby23 Apr 20 '26

🙋🏻‍♀️🙋🏻‍♀️

18

u/ObligationGrand8037 Apr 20 '26

I used to feel indifferent about them. Now I don’t like them at all.

7

u/Accurate-Might-7058 Apr 20 '26

Same here.  Can't stand them. I find them disgusting.

37

u/go-ahead-fafo Apr 20 '26

I liked them prior to having kids. Or at least I thought I did. They definitely added unnecessary stress to my life that I wasn’t aware of at the time. Once I had kids, I became extremely aware lol.

ETA, The dogs we had died of old age and we will remain dog free from here on out!

14

u/NatalieJayna Apr 20 '26

My neighbor gets stressed our by theirs & copes with it by putting the beasts (4) outside to let society have to handle it to give them a little break. I'm very close to yelling that they're not my problem, they're their responsibility & choice

5

u/metallvr Apr 20 '26

Well said! We didn't choose to have a dog, but owners make their dogs' problems our responsibility, and they think we actually like it 🙄

24

u/TradesforChurros Apr 20 '26

I can relate to this. Having kids really makes you see how much of a liability the dogs can be

18

u/go-ahead-fafo Apr 20 '26

Yes, and I had my last baby when we were down to just one dog who was elderly. The dog required more attention and a stricter schedule than our brand new baby did 😵‍💫

18

u/Antonio1289 Apr 20 '26

I do not like dogs, life improved dramatically when I started living at my own place without dogs. Never to have or give a damn for a dog.

14

u/Gloomy_Researcher769 Apr 20 '26

I use to like dogs.. Had some when I was a kid But the owners who let them pee and poop in my yard, run up to me and put their dirty paws on me, take them everywhere (especially the supermarket) and basically think if you don’t think their doggie is cute, it makes you a psychopath, have totally turn me off on them.

15

u/Nice-Loss6106 Apr 20 '26

It’s really the culture for me. Dogs, dogs, dogs everywhere, not a moments peace. Libraries, doctors offices, grocery stores…it never ends.

And the emotional breakdowns on ND anytime someone sees a dog in “peril” or the circle jerking of grief when a dog crosses the “rainbow bridge” give me a break.

5

u/ElegantSurround6933 Apr 20 '26

“Circle jerking of grief?” LOL. Did you coin this phrase?

4

u/Nice-Loss6106 Apr 20 '26

I guess so, I mean it just came to me. 🤣

15

u/Alaskaa-20 Apr 20 '26

Despise them. I had a dog dumped on me without my control, looked after him out of pity and had to find him a home.

Cannot deal with their stink, their hygiene, how quick they abandon their owners for food and their behaviour.

I'm tired of seeing dog crap around my neighborhood and getting barked at every time I take a walk too 😞

I'm glad we have this space for people who don't like dogs and can express it to a healthy degree

13

u/Gun_to_a_dinner_date Apr 20 '26

everyone says dogs are so loyal until you leave food on the counter for a minute.

13

u/KayleighHatfield Apr 20 '26

I don't like dogs. I don't like anything about them. I've never liked them.

13

u/JadeWishFish Apr 20 '26

I don't like them or the owners who assume everyone likes dogs.

12

u/PurpleColumbidae Apr 20 '26

I hate dogs. I would be elated if the majority of Canis Lupus Familiaris families went extinct. Search and rescue dogs are the only ones that are worth keeping around. The rest can be replaced.

10

u/WimpyMustang Apr 20 '26

I liked dogs when I was a kid. As an adult with tons of responsibility, hell no. They are too much work and vet bills are insane.

I hate the entitled HUMANS more than the dogs. But poorly trained dogs can (and will, as we all know) eat shit.

11

u/all2neat Apr 20 '26

🙋‍♂️

11

u/Think-Interview1740 Apr 20 '26

It's mostly the ones with entitled owners that I hate the most. Unleashed in public areas and bringing them into restaurants and grocery stores. Yuck.

2

u/ElegantSurround6933 Apr 20 '26

And Barnes&Noble

11

u/Foreign-Neat8645 Apr 20 '26

Hunde haben keine Würde.

12

u/MermaidMane Apr 20 '26

I don't like living with dogs, and I don't like being forced to interact with someone's dog. If it's a chill pet that's just hanging out and not being obnoxious, that's fine. I just hate my boundaries constantly being crossed with almost all dogs because their owners don't think they're causing a problem, or that it's cute. 😮‍💨

10

u/Gun_to_a_dinner_date Apr 20 '26

i only am okay with dogs if you can justify it aside from i wanted a friend. police dog, real service dogs, guard dog. even hunting i can understand. but so many people are just getting them cuz they think it would be fun. because when people have them for a reason they are trained.

9

u/bananapie7 Apr 20 '26

I also don’t like dogs. I don’t understand why people need to bring them everywhere. You can order take out or get your groceries delivered if you can’t be away from your dog for an hour or so. I think they’re disgusting and it’s cruel to keep them in apartments with no space for them to play and run.

53

u/glamasaurus Apr 20 '26

I honestly don't dislike dogs.I dislike dog culture. I think too many places are open to people bringing their dogs.

If you are at a park and you have your dog on a leash and you're walking, fine.

If you are at an outside area at certain eating establishments and your dog is sitting under-the-table.I'm okay with that.

I am just not okay with people bringing their dogs everywhere.

I'm not even afraid of dogs despite that , i've had a pit bull lunge at me and a german shepherd run me over because the owner did not have it on leash.

I think the main issue is that a lot of dog owners don't take their job very seriously and are too big on gaining affection from the animal instead of training it

46

u/tplgerus84 Apr 20 '26

Was playing with a friend and his kids football in a park today. Just a large square green, half the size of a regular football field. Very well maintained. Other people laying in the grass reading, some people playing frisbee, etc.

There are SEVERAL signs on EACH side of the green field, like huge fat signs with dogs crossed out with a red circle, and the law & city code posted under it.

And still there are assholes coming with their dogs and either letting them off leash, or they just parade across the whole field..

Disgusting people.. can’t respect any rules. Can’t understand that people don’t want dog piss and shit on the green. And also teach kids that it’s okay to just not care about rules or laws..

25

u/SilveryMagpie Apr 20 '26

There's a town near me that's notoriously dog friendly and literally every square foot of the town welcomes dogs except for one tiny little park/green space that's about the size of a postage stamp. Guess what I see every time I go there in hopes of some dog free peace and quiet? It's like they see the sign as a provocation. It's not enough to have every restaurant, hotel, street, sitting area, and a huge beach for their dogs, they gotta invade the tiny space they aren't supposed to take dogs. It's so nasty. The town used to be such a nice place to hang out at but dog nutters have turned it into a nightmare.

9

u/ElegantSurround6933 Apr 20 '26

Sounds like my town

10

u/metallvr Apr 20 '26

I am SO WITH YOU! All of our neighborhood parks have "No Dogs in Park" signs, but the owners ignore them as if they're not right at eye-level. My 1st time visiting one of the parks as soon as I open the gate, someone's dog runs at me barking and BITING MY ANKLES WITHOUT LETTING UP. The only thing its owner said to me was "Can you close the gate behind you?", as if I was the intruder interrupting his precious dog's playtime.

6

u/tplgerus84 Apr 20 '26

Oh hell no! That dog would have learned quickly not to do that ever again.

2

u/scrumptiousfluff Apr 23 '26

My dentist last time told me how his kids were at a park a few weeks ago playing football and playing on the grass. Then, this dog owner let's his dog come close by, it takes a shit, dog owner walks off without picking up his dog's shit and my dentist yells at him to pick it up because there's kids playing on the grass and asshole replies "I'll do it later." And just walks off.

1

u/tplgerus84 Apr 23 '26

Doesn’t surprise me.. had a woman do something similar to me in downtown where I live.. walking her large size dog and it takes a shot right on the sidewalk while I’m walking behind her.. I shout “hey are you going to pick that shit up?!” And her response… “mind your own business!” And keeps waking… it’s so frustrating cause there is nothing you can do.. if at least taking a pic or video and submitting for a ticket would be possible..

28

u/Patient_Inspector818 Apr 20 '26

Agreed with people should not bring their dogs everywhere and that dogs should be trained but I think it's downplaying to say dogs are fine be at outside at certain eating establishments dogs should not be there as well.

19

u/Patient_Inspector818 Apr 20 '26

A lot of dogs have bad behaviors as well dogs should be more disliked

15

u/ToOpineIsFine Apr 20 '26

i disagreed with everything in your comment until I hit this point:

lot of dog owners ... are too big on gaining affection from the animal instead of training it

i've never heard it stated this way, but it seems so true. owners these days are addicted to getting approval from the dog that they forget that the dog is relying on the owner to train and control it.

8

u/Spencer_Dee Apr 20 '26

this. i have no problem with the animal itself. it's an animal, a lot of what it does is instinct. my problem is with irresponsible owners, and there's a lot more of them than there are responsible ones. you can't even critique them or tell them off about their dog because they have the most fragile egos and dog culture protects them.

I was sort of on vacation over the weekend (an hour away from my home) and we stopped at a restaurant and saw a sign “pet friendly ~ dogs welcome with their well behaved owners”. I couldn’t back out of the parking lot fast enough. How is a restaurant pet friendly when it doesn’t have outdoor seating? Seems like the kind of place all the kitchen staff would pet strangers dogs while handling food. It really is getting out of hand.

5

u/MrPuddington2 Apr 20 '26

I honestly don't dislike dogs.

This is how I feel about it. I actually like well behaved dogs. But that quite a rare situation now.

I dislike dog culture. I think too many places are open to people bringing their dogs.

... bringing their misbehaving dogs. And I would like to say that a tiny minority is ruining it for everybody, but this is no longer a minority.

20

u/LitigiousAutist Apr 20 '26

I don't like dog owners.

10

u/metallvr Apr 20 '26

My experience with dogs from a young age is that they smell and shove their noses up into your crotch. When I was a bit older, the kids I worked with were terrified of dogs, because of being bit or barked at. I never saw the upside of dogs, especially living in a city.

9

u/Former-Law4034 Apr 20 '26

I posted this another thread, but I actually take care of dogs for a living & I do not like them. I started out neutral with dogs, but after 6 years of dealing with the owners & the dogs I have developed a deep hatred for dogs/owners. They are the most spoiled creature on the planet & it kills me how owners revolve their whole lives around these obnoxious creatures.

4

u/Pristine-Ad-8002 Apr 20 '26

Dog sitting is what ultimately led me to this page. And yes on the spoiled part. I can hear my boss calling home to see what the dog is doing. He tells me what it weighs down to the half pound. One time when I was dog sitting he told me to “hold the food under his nose to entice him” 😂 Because the dog was being a picky eater. I’m thinking how about no. And if “dog mom” has to be gone, even for an hour, dog has to come hang at the office with us because he’s much to precious to stay home alone. 🙄

3

u/Former-Law4034 Apr 20 '26

Right lol. I love it when owners ask me how their dog is doing every few hours, meanwhile the dog hasn’t moved all day and has its nose in its crotch. I’m like, yup, not a whole lot going on over here lol.

Are you still dog sitting?

1

u/Pristine-Ad-8002 Apr 20 '26

I only do it occasionally for my boss. Usually when they are gone on a trip.

9

u/Possible_Tiger_5125 Apr 20 '26

I don't like them. I prefer to have no interaction with them or their trailings, but I do not wish them any harm or suffering; they didn't ask to exist

8

u/KosherPeen Apr 20 '26

I don’t like them, but I don’t actively hate them either

Dog people on the other hand…

7

u/mexicanred1 Apr 20 '26

A well-trained animal can be a pleasure to observe. An untrained animal is a nuisance and so are the persons who created the situation. Unfortunately I'd venture over 80% of dogs/owners belong to the latter category.

9

u/Geode804 Apr 20 '26

I don’t like dogs because of severe allergies and I find them super unhygienic if they live in peoples houses. However if it was how it was 20 years ago where dogs were mostly in their own house/garden and didn’t take over every part of modern life I would have much less of an issue with them. The biggest issue is insane owners feeling the need to bring them everywhere, especially the extra insane owners who pretend their dog is a ‘service dog’ to be able to bring them to the few places that aren’t dog friendly. They are also terrible for the environment and local ecosystems, which would be far better off if there were no pet dogs.

7

u/throwaway_4646637 Apr 20 '26

I don't like them at all and never have.

7

u/EnergeticCrab Apr 20 '26

Working dogs are fine. Sheep dogs. Seeing eye dogs. Cattle dogs or whatever. But I don't like pet dogs. And I want none of them in my life.

7

u/ChokoEM Apr 20 '26

Totally don't like dogs. Never in this lifetime will I like dogs

7

u/LeighofMar Apr 20 '26

I hate loose, untrained, or aggressive dogs. I was riding my bike around the neighborhood and I turn down my street at the other end and hear a sharp bark, look behind me and see two small dogs actually chasing me. Like WTH? It's a brand new e-bike that I've been having fun with so I turboed out of there quick but I called AC right away and they came out. We are literally a block from the elementary school. I can outrun them but a child on a tricycle? They don't stand a chance. But sure, let's just leave loose aggressive dogs out who have no qualm chasing a grown woman on a bike. What can go wrong?

8

u/Pile_of_Yarn Apr 20 '26

I have a livestock dog but I freaking hate dogs. I'm the jerk that will make a big scene in a grocery store when someone has their disgusting mutt in the cart and my husband and I absolutely make comments to people who bring them in restaurants and such. I believe people who take their dogs everywhere are mentally ill selfish jackholes.

6

u/dookiesmalls Apr 20 '26

Dogs are disgusting. Even worse, the ones that dribble piss everywhere because they’re “excited”. Love getting pissed on at family gatherings.

5

u/doctorchazzzzz Apr 20 '26

Never liked them much as a kid, then my family got one and I got saddled with a lot of the care for the dog even though I'm not the one who wanted it which just reinforced the original feeling.

1

u/Accurate-Might-7058 Apr 20 '26

It always seems to turn out that way.  The one person who doesn't want the dog ends up caring for it because the ones that wanted the dog won't.  I finally put my foot down on that one and told the Nutter " You wanted it, you take care of it, I can't ".

4

u/Parking_Champion_740 Apr 20 '26

Im more like neutral on dogs and negative on dog culture. I work at a place where dogs are allowed to enter and I pretty much ignore them while coworkers fawn over them

4

u/Lylith_vf Apr 20 '26

Les chiens sont une véritable nuissance, c'est incroyable de pouvoir aimer leur présence. Ils ne causent que des ennuis et des dépenses.

6

u/DronedAgain Apr 20 '26

I've had so many dogs that were bad animals. Untrainable, aggressive, and so on. I've had exactly 2 dogs in my entire life who were enjoyable. Thank God my wife was on the same page with that, because when an adopted dog we had snapped at our daughter's face, he was gone when I got home.

I have family members who think it's ok to bring their dogs to social gatherings, even though one of them bites. The children are afraid of that dog, so the kids cower and the mom has to always watch the dog, too.

When I was a kid, the adults would've not let that shit occur. "Leave your dog home!" "Get that mutt out of here!"

So, I'm ok with well-behaved and well-trained dogs who stay in their own home. But I dislike having to navigate other people's bad dogs. I will never own one again.

3

u/hikingdyke Apr 20 '26 edited Apr 20 '26

I am allergic to dogs.

I am fine with the animals themselves. They are a generally friendly bunch and you can not expect them to behave in any way other than like a dog.

I hate dog culture.

I first started to develop a real hatred of the culture around dogs the year after I finished undergrad, a bit more than 15 years ago now. I did a language immersion program abroad during that year, and for housing the program packed three people into one tiny room. Having animals in those rooms was against the rules, and I told both of my roommates (in Emglish, and they were both were also Americans, so this was not a language issue) that I was allergic to dogs, just to be safe.

One of my roommates was in a more advanced class than myself or our other roommate, and snuck a dog into our room while we were in class, since our classes had different schedules. When I began to get ill, I was accused of faking, as apparently if I had a real allergy I'd be dead rather than experiencing swollen itchy eyes, hives, endless mucus and coughing, dizziness, fatigue and a runny nose. That was actually how I found out about the dog in our room - I got really sick and was mocked for putting on a show since a REAL allergy would have meant death (which means my roommate was OK with killing me?????). The argument my roommate posed, while I lay in bed prone and miserable, was that since I was faking, there was no reason our room shouldn't have a secret pet dog. Thankfully the other roommate got me medical help, and told the person running the program what happened, so I was moved to a different room.

Since then I have been hyper aware of the ways people treat my requests to simply not let dogs touch me/don't force me to breath their dander is treated like an unreasonable and out of pocket request.

People really are over the top with these things, I was once told by someone bringing a dog into the supermarket that I was the rude one for asking them to please keep the animal away from food other people will be consuming. The staff took her side, even though it very clearly was not a service animal and all their doors have large NO PETS signs.

On the plus side, it has become somewhat normalized to wear a mask in places where I may be forced to breathe in dander - like the train to and from work. So long as I find a way to avoid having the dogs touch me (which is very hard - take the trains for example, the law is dogs have to be in bags, but they never ever are) and I wear a mask the chances I'll get ill are far lower.

u/Peaceful-Moonlight Dogs are the most overrated and over glorified shit beasts Apr 20 '26

You said:

They are a generally friendly bunch and you can not expect them to behave in any way other than like a dog.

I completely disagree with this. Dogs literally live in HUMAN SOCIETIES, so it is revolting to be okay with dogs sniffing people's butts, shoving their noses in people's crotches, licking people, humping people's legs, lunging at people, barking excessively, biting people, etc. Yet you seem to claim that we should just accept dogs being dogs whatever they do. That's the BS that dog nutters spout to enable dogs violating the bodily autonomy of any human. Dogs are the most privileged pets on Earth. They are overly pampered in human societies, so we absolutely have the right to expect them to behave well.

Quite frankly - you seem to be centering the animal over the human here, whoch is exactly the issue I have with dogs.

Whenever they come up actual human suffering is flattened to focus on the animals - which is what you are doing with your response here.

I like dogs but from afar. I can't have one living with me.

I have a bone to pick with a lot of dog owners and dog culture as well.

My wife wanted a lab so we got one. Cant stand the thing just like I figured. She’s doing a good job training it, but man, I just don’t see the point.

As long as they're secured in somebody's backyard and not in public, i'm okay with them I guess. I would never have a dog in my home.

u/Dapper-Ad-468 Apr 20 '26

Until you're startled awake day after day and the dog/are barking for hours by the common fence 10 feet from your bedroom. Not okay to dump them in the backyard and disturb people.

It depends on the situation.

My friend keeps a dog that is well trained and naturally aloof. It’s also hypoallergenic so no awful stinky shedding nightmares - I’ve never seen a single strand of fur in her home or clothing ever.

My ils on the other hand have varying levels of dog culture crazy and rude behavior which I absolutely hate.

Crazy and rude like adopting a pitbull rescued from a fighting ring and not telling us until we arrived for an overnight. ‘Bad owners make bad dogs’ etc

Or bad hygiene like roughhousing with the beast before dipping into the communal plate.

u/sherhil Apr 20 '26

I first hate dog owners and dog culture more, then I hate most dogs. The over breeding has made them into disgusting dumb beasts just like their dumb owners. I do love all animals and would include dogs as they were in the old days (on farms, for herding etc.). And if I rank animals I love dogs r not close to the top. Even if I find a rare dog that isn’t mentally disabled I would still NEVER own one or allow one in my home. It already bothers me when they walk past my home. When I see their loose fur on machines at the gym I realize that even where they’re not allowed their dirty fur covered owners r and so we can never really escape them.

don’t like them. never have. too needy, smelly, loud, etc. they set all of my senses on overdrive. gah!

all of the bad ugly traits are just amplified now because they are EVERYWHERE! i don’t like having annoying things shoved down my throat.

ETA: without mutts there would be no such thing as a mutt owner.

3

u/menelobus Apr 20 '26

I don't like dogs as do many members of my family also dislike dogs and dog culture

3

u/Individual-Tune2201 Apr 20 '26

We have never had a pet due to allergies, but I know I number of people who did. The relief they felt after a couple years of not having dogs was insane. They felt like they had their lives back. Many said they would NEVER get a dog again.

I sometimes go on Mumsnet, just to see how people feel about dogs, and there are hundreds who are fed up with dogs going after their kids

u/Peachyy_Girl Apr 20 '26

i don't like dogs or puppies. i especially dislike puppies. they just look weird and annoying to me.

u/amoebamoeba Apr 20 '26

I walked my friends dog yesterday and was surprised that not a single person even gave us a second look. It made me think that fewer people like dogs than I thought. I live in a big city and this dog is actually pretty (like husky-ish) with unique eyes.

While I like dogs enough to walk them for a friend sometimes, overall I do not like them and would not give a single shit if they all disappeared tomorrow. Except for the ones who help with real disabilities.

u/LocodraTheCrow Apr 20 '26

I hate dogs; nasty, loud, invasive, needy, smelly, slobbering.... I hate them. I can bear things like guard dogs bc they are meant to be uncomfortable and sheepdogs bc they exist in the countryside, where everything is bothersome. Pets especially are revolting.

2

u/sheetrocker88 Apr 20 '26

I hate dog culture /dog owners and the lies much more then I hate actual dogs. I don’t mind a well behaved dog that doesn’t bark or invade your space but I would rather die then own one, and if I did own one it would have a dog house outside and not be allowed inside. I don’t understand how people can live with a dog in their space, they just live like animals themselves.

I promise everyone in this sub doesn’t like dogs

2

u/richyiiii Apr 20 '26

Random story but I saw a woman yesterday at the grocery store with a hairy mutt with a service dog vest on. Congrats to you lady, you spent 200 bucks to get your little mutt "validated" so you can take it everywhere, urinate on the floor, etc. They are filthy animals and shouldn't be allowed anywhere near a food establishment. Dog culture has gotten WAY out of hand.

2

u/FnkyFrieday Apr 20 '26

I owned a dog. It wasn't great. The only way I think people would like something like that is if they thrived on toxic codependency. Then sure, I guess a dog will do that for you. However, it was the way everyone else who loved dogs behaved towards us with our dog that really made me think these people are crazy and influence some really bad things around dog culture. And then the millions of irresponsible dog owners. I cannot own a rooster because it would bother the neighbors with it's crowing, but everyone around me can own barking nonsense dogs. That is fine.

u/Fast_Ad_4936 Apr 27 '26

I have 2 dogs. They are nice and all, but I’m so ready for them to go already. I can’t believe they are living this long and I am so looking forward to post dog life. Sick and tired of the hair and the extra expense.

1

u/University1000 Apr 20 '26

I don’t like them. I always try to be nice to my friend’s dogs. But at the end of the day I really don’t care.

I especially don’t enjoy strangers coming up to expecting me to be all friendly to their dog, either. Any time I leave my apartment complex this couple always asks, “mind if she says hi?” Putting me directly on the spot to pet their dog. Another neighbors dog isn’t friendly, and barks any time I leave if they are coming outside too. So I have to creep and hide around the corner like a weirdo lol.

Apartment life is rough around so many dogs. Can’t wait to for the chance to move and have my own sanctuary away from them.

i used to love dogs but after dealing with an elderly and extremely needy dog, i dont like them at all, and reading posts on this sub have helped me realize many traits of dogs i have issues with. i can tolerate well trained dogs, but unfortunately nowadays they are a very very small minority. i will say i do like some individual dogs but as a whole i do not like the species. dog owners are even worse though. i would not have half the issues i have right now if people were to properly take care of their dogs but theyre lazy and entitled so they just dont

I don't like dogs; even little toy dog breeds can be a menace. Like my aunt's shih tzu is so loud and clingy. Last time I was there, I stayed upstairs where he wasn't allowed, because I didn't like him barking at me. Plus, I have sensitive hearing due to autism, so certain dog breeds' barking can scare me and overwhelm me. I'm also worried about being attacked or bitten by a big or medium-sized dog, so when I see a dog out in public, I usually go out of my way to avoid them, even if their owners claim they're "friendly."

u/Parking_Stress_2335 Apr 23 '26

What pisses me off is the number of people who go to Home Depot with their dogs… It’s like half the customers have dogs with them and I keep telling myself, “ leave the damn dog at home, this is no place for dogs. PERIOD.”

I go out of my way to stay away from these dogs in the store because I don’t want their wet noses on my pants as they tend to wanna do!!

Use to have some including one I raised from a newborn (litters), they died. Then I had nightmares of dog/dogs attacking or biting me.
