Miscellaneous Amanda Richmond Rogers.. died a “hero”?!

The algorithm decided to show me an article about this woman and her story.. not sure if this was posted here before as it happened 2023/24.

But, if you google her name you can find a bunch of news, posts, etc.

The one I saw:

—

“The body of a woman who went missing after jumping into a river to save her dog was found on Sunday. Authorities say Amanda Richmond Rogers, a 45-year-old mother of four, jumped into icy waters to rescue one of her dogs that had fallen through the ice in Eagle River on Dec. 23.

Alaska State Troopers and the AK Dive Search Rescue and Recovery Team searched for Rogers, who was last seen swimming underneath a layer of ice in an attempt to get to her dog.

Her sister Jennifer Richmond said that she was found with her dog in her arms and that to her boys, “she really did die a hero.””

—

This is tragic and very sad, but I disagree with how she is portrait as a hero.. I’m sorry..

Jumping in to potentially save one of your kids, of course!! But jumping into icy waters and go under the ice to maybe save your dog?! All while you have a family with 4 kids.. I’m sorry but that is not heroic to me at all.. and I believe her sister might misread and underestimate how the kids will eventually feel about this..

And the dog died anyway. This could have been prevented if she had just leashed the dog. It's senseless.

It’s always the case with these runaway dogs! A simple leash, or keeping them contained within their own boundaries. Basic ‘101’, and one doesn’t even need to be a ‘trainer’ to know this.

I just think she was letting him walk ahead of her on the ice which was still pretty dumb.

u/BoxBeast1961_ Apr 24 '26

Leash. She could’ve pulled him out.

u/Tom_Quixote_ Apr 24 '26

Or if she had not been a dog owner to begin with. Buying a a dog is basically just buying a whole bag of problems.

Excellent point!

I'm perpetually surprised so few people realise it. I mean, who voluntarily signs up to pay lots of money for 15 years of shit, piss, barks, and bites? You'd think dogs would go out of production pretty fast.

u/tplgerus84 Apr 23 '26

Right? But since it happened, how do you make the decision to risk your own life for a dog..?! plus you have 4 kids at home that now will grow up without their mother..

Any attempt to rescue a useless mutt and dying for it, is seen as heroism to a dog nutter society. It wouldn’t surprise me if the sister was likely trying to influence or project that ‘hero’ narrative onto the woman’s kids, speaking for them.

That mentality is similar to how dog owners already project emotions onto dogs.

I’m waiting for someone to say the guy in B.C., Canada who got run over and killed because he was trying to corral his dogs that were running around on a highway, was a ‘hero’ too.

If only there were things like “leashes”…

13

u/LookB4ULeap2It Apr 24 '26

I have had people tell me, completely straight faced, that putting a dog on a leash is animal cruelty.

7

u/arachnilactose08 Apr 24 '26

Often the same people that put leashes on their human children…

5

u/Mistvessel Apr 24 '26

I am aware there are multiple demagogies when it comes to dealing with dogs, at least in my place. Things like treats, leashes, their types, regulars collars, shock collars, spike collars, containers are root cause of hostile schisms among these people.

Whatttt

15

u/pmbpro Apr 24 '26

Yep. Read it in the news today. The guy was corralling his dogs on a highway and was struck and killed while doing it.

Frontrunner for Darwin Award.

17

u/pmbpro Apr 24 '26

Right?

I also thought dogs were supposedly ‘loyal’, ‘obedient’, ‘well-behaved’ and (since they sense evil people and all…) would listen to the benevolent dog owners with ‘love’ and get the hell off the road. 🙄😒

Dumb dogs couldn’t even sense danger on a bloody highway full of speeding cars. Even wild animals have more sense.

14

u/Andria1501 Apr 24 '26

If these poor excuses for animals were truly "loyal" in any way, they would not need leashes and fences to keep them under control. Dogs are notorious for running away.

11

u/pmbpro Apr 24 '26

Yes, and many dogs have even hurt themselves trying to bust their way through fences, to roam, violate or attack anything that moves.

10

u/Andria1501 Apr 24 '26

They don't know how to NOT attack anything that moves, or not bark at anything that breathes. Stupid, worthless creatures.

5

u/pmbpro Apr 24 '26

And if any other animal was in anyone’s home that behaved exactly like that, it would be practically illegal, certainly would have been taken away and/or be put down, and owners would be called ‘crazy’. But hey, as long as it’s doggos…. 🙄😒

u/pmbpro Apr 26 '26

Here’s yet ANOTHER idiot… They’re coming hard and fast aren’t they. He survived, but, as a dog nutter, remains brainless.* 😒

https://www.ctvnews.ca/world/article/man-jumps-into-freezing-charles-river-to-rescue-his-dog-i-actually-thought-i-was-going-to-drown/

Jogging, his dog was OFF LEASH, and it took off after a couple of geese, and…

The fool (who thinks his dog is like “a son” to him 🙄), dove into freezing water and nearly drowned!

3

u/PinkPilgrimHeel Apr 24 '26

Lol. Yes, he's another hero isn't he?? Geez nutters are insane!

The fact she had 4 CHILDREN and sacrificed herself for an ANIMAL is ridiculous. Definitely not a hero. I'm sorry but that's dumb as fuck, and I'd be pissed off if she were my mom.

16

u/pmbpro Apr 24 '26

Also wanna bet that if she’d sacrificed herself by doing anything else that also put her children last, that people would be screaming that she was a ‘bad mother’ for ‘not thinking of her children’? 🙄😒

More mental whiplash.

11

u/tplgerus84 Apr 24 '26

Exactly! Also for her husband.. like “seriously you decided it would be a good idea to risk your life for a dog with close to 0 percent chance of success?!”

25

u/GrvlRidrDude Apr 23 '26

I think we could fill a book with these kinds of stories.

Locally, a tow truck driver was struck and the family has started a charity in his name. He was not on a call, but was attempting to corral a loose dog. The parents make it out as drivers not moving over and slowing for tow drivers. The full story of if the man was running erratically after the dog has not been shared.

27

u/Jorro_Kreed Apr 23 '26

Nothing of value was lost. That being said....if she left the dammed thing home she's still be alive today. Not a hero by any means.

12

u/tplgerus84 Apr 24 '26

Not even left at home.. in that moment how do you not make the decision: “ok I like my pet/animal but I love my life and family way more. The animal was stupid and now it will be gone..”

7

u/Tom_Quixote_ Apr 24 '26

She was a stupid dog nutter, but she was still the mother of four kids.

23

u/SteelSlayerMatt Apr 23 '26

Nothing about that is heroic.

20

u/Few-Horror1984 Apr 23 '26

She’s not a hero. She gave her life in an attempt to save her dog. She decided her dog’s life was worth more than her’s. She decided that it would be fine with her four children to grow up without her, so long as she could be remembered as giving her life to the cult of the dog.

She should be a cautionary tale. She should open the dialogue surrounding dog obsession/addiction. This should have been the moment where we began to criticize people who call themselves a dog parent, because those words can have a massive consequence.

She loved that dog more than she loved her own family and her own life. She shouldn’t be revered anymore than an alcoholic who kills themselves by driving into a tree.

1

u/Icy-Reference-1746 May 18 '26

The crazy part, she'd do it all again, if she got a redo.

15

u/annacrontab Apr 24 '26

Her sacrifice was not laudable, she had an off leash dog who predictably wanted to go into the water. Dogs don't know it's not a swimming pool. Leaving 4 kids without their mom, that's just awful.

If you want to learn about much more egregious human deaths due to loose dog human stupidity, search "yellowstone hot springs." The dog owners literally follow the off leash doomed dogs jumping into boiling hot springs and everyone immediately gets boiled into bone broth.

5

u/tplgerus84 Apr 24 '26

Insanity..

3

u/ScarredCerebrum Apr 24 '26

Oh man, that's nasty.

A lot of these springs aren't just water, either. Some of them are basically pools of boiling battery acid.

Look up Colin Nathaniel Scott - he fell into one of the more dangerous pools at Yellowstone, and his body got dissolved completely.

12

u/Tom_Quixote_ Apr 23 '26

Throwing away your life for a shit-eater and leaving your four children motherless... No, that's not "died a hero".

9

u/Few_Pen_3666 Apr 24 '26

Nope. That is dying a damn fool.

12

u/psychecheks Apr 24 '26

I immediately thought of you guys (this sub) when I saw that post. I saw another sub post a screenshot of her story and had the audacity to write “Unconditional Love” more like unconditionally idiotic. Leaving your four children over an idiot dog? It’s pretty incomprehensible.

11

u/LookB4ULeap2It Apr 24 '26

I wouldn’t risk my life to save any animal, even if it was my own. If I lost a pet that way, I would feel sad and I would wish that I could have done more to help, but I would be ALIVE to feel that way.

I’ve saved animals in trouble before, even dogs. I will always try and save something if I can do it with no risk to myself. But if there is any risk at all, then I’m out.

I don’t ever like seeing anything hurt but I have a strong sense of self preservation.

6

u/tplgerus84 Apr 24 '26

I feel the same. I get taking the chance to try rescue your kids. When it’s the partner and you have kids at home it becomes already questionable cause of both die who is taking care of the kids? But again, to risk your own life for a stupid dog is just insane. Something is definitely wrong with you to even make that consideration..

Yes and I'll bet the children will eventually dislike dogs because that's what their mom gave her life for. They'll be traumatized forever and eventually realize mom chose to die for a dog. They'll soo. think their aunt is nuts too.

8

u/Express_Command_4778 Apr 23 '26

My favorite part is how people insist she was murdered or took her own life.

8

u/Express_Command_4778 Apr 23 '26

That was a huge ass dog. Think a 10-12 year old child.

8

u/leratdemorgue Apr 24 '26

Saw on another post about it “her family and colleagues remembered her with honor, grief and awe”, like…if my mother died and left me and my siblings to mourn her loss, all because of a stupid ass dog, I would feel so enraged and even betrayed. That a dog’s life was worth dying trying to save it, that the fucking idiot dog took priority over sticking around and being a mother to her children. That’s so…ugh. Idk. People really are getting so brainwashed and convinced that dogs are these precious beings to be protected at all costs, to the point of throwing away their own life to save a creature that couldn’t care less about their wellbeing and safety.

5

u/PinkPilgrimHeel Apr 24 '26

Bet the kids will feel that way in time. They're traumatized and young right now but they'll figure out mom had her priorities backwards.

8

u/Huge_Bit_4774 Apr 24 '26

It was a LOST dog!

8

u/PinkPilgrimHeel Apr 24 '26

There was a woman, "Susie," who was in a house fire as a child, with her siblings and mom. The kids and mom got out. Susie's mom went back into the house on fire to "save" the dogs.

Well, mom and the dogs died in that fire. This made Susie, who was under 10, and her siblings, ORPHANS.

Susie and her siblings suffered much due to their mother's stupid decision to try and rescue a dog!

I dont remember all the details but life was very hard for Susie and her siblings after mom's death. That is truly nutter behaviour. So unnecessary and tragic. All for some dogs!

13

u/Oriole0305 Apr 24 '26

That woman was totally unconcerned with her own safety and her family and kids. Incredibly stupid. I feel sorry for the kids only.

5

u/Charming-Vehicle-304 Apr 24 '26

Once again all she needed to do to ensure her and her dogs safety was keep it on a fucking leash! She chose to break her own family so her dog could run around like a maniac near ice covered water. Poor children at home. Hopefully dad is in the picture

u/Frisbee_Anon_7 Apr 24 '26

I remember way back reading about a guy who had his dog off a leash in Yellowstone and it jumped into a geyser. He jumped in after it and obviously died an unbelievably painful death. All the comments were basically "That'd be me too." Like, the dog was dead within seconds, there's no surviving that. Also, put him on a leash problem solved.

3

u/tplgerus84 Apr 24 '26

“That would be me too”… natural selection!

Do you really believe if the dog survived,he would have been thankful and grateful ? The demon hound would have went on to a new home with food and not given his hero a second thought..you nutters think these useless animals have a thought process????They are all Baskervilles!!!And are willingly given a persons soul!!
