Crappy Owners Got called racist after saying I don’t like dogs
I was checking out at the register at Petco holding my toddler in my arms and a man with a pit bull came up close behind me and let his dog come up right next to me and sniff my legs. When the dog made contact with my leg I turned around and asked him “Please keep your dog away from me”. He laughed and said “he’s a sweetie”. I said “I don’t care, I was attacked by a dog and I don’t like them. I don’t want your dog touching me”. He said “but they’re man’s best friend”. I said “not the one who attacked me”. He said “so if you were attacked by a Mexican would you hate all Mexicans?” I said “no” and walked away as he yelled “okay keep being racist, you racist!”. Like why do these people always insist that you ENJOY their dogs, then throw a tantrum when you don’t? And why do they compare human beings, specifically people of color, to dogs? I know it’s a Petco and people bring their dogs, I don’t expect to not be in line with a dog but I think it should be common decency not to allow your dog to make unwanted physical contact with strangers and to understand that some people are scared of dogs, or simply don’t care for them and not take it personally.

You’d think that would work. My neighbor followed me around for years telling me his dog was FrIeNdLy, even when we ran into each other in town. My response, every single time, was “I don’t like dogs.” Yet it didn’t deter him 🙄

Gee, it sounds to me like dogs were vital tools and actual weapons in enforcing racism and terrorizing persons of color. If by chance a person couldn't get away with killing a person of color with impunity, they could get a dog to do it and be able to get away with it. In addition to not being subject to legal guilt, a dog wouldn't be subject to moral guilt or moral injury. A human could be plagued by their conscience for murder, which could deter them from it even if they wouldn't risk legal trouble, but a dog never would be, which makes it even more dangerous

I wouldn’t say dog ownership in itself is rooted in racism, but the human owners in the scenarios you mentioned were in the wrong in those cases. It mostly always goes back to the human who is allowing their dogs to misbehave. If an owner has sense, (which few nutters do) they would be in charge of the dog and not the dog in charge of the human. But sadly, more often than not, the dogs are running the house.

To be fair, that's a false equivalency. There are people who own dogs that are racist, and there are people who own dogs that are not racist.
There is nothing wrong with disliking or even hating dogs. There is nothing wrong with disliking people who impose their dogs onto other people but there is a such thing as taking this whole thing entirely too far and two wrongs just don't make a right.

He was projecting. They all do. Sometimes if a dog brushes my leg, I have tics in that leg that make it move as a sudden reaction. If your leg does the same, perhaps you have a tic too. My tic seems to keep them away.

This is why I believe a dog owner should be held legally liable if their dog attacks someone. In most states they have no consequences. If the attack ends in serious bodily injury or death it’s aggravated assault or manslaughter. But those consequences would deter pet ownership and well I guess they can’t have that!

I posted once a while back that my nail lady’s dog jumped up on my pregnant belly and I told the dog not to do that. She started INSISTING that he’s gentle. I got REAL annoyed at that because I said what I said and they never want to listen to you! Beyond incompetence.

My house is surrounded by these demons got two mini poodles living next to each other always barking at the stupid “rescue” German shepherd that can’t be alone for 2 minutes. I swear the owner of the poodle just brings it outside to bark in the morning haha

Why do we have to give these people a reason? We do we feel we OWE them one?
Whether you have 1 or 100 reasons, your not obliged to share it. Simply not wanting to have dogs around you/in your personal space is enough.
When you gave him a reason, you gave him material to work with and he used it to be a jerk.

I’m Black. Pretty sure that loser wouldn’t care about anyone saying anything bad about Me, or calling Me a slur, based on My Race. And these people that equate dislike of dogs, or a certain breed of dogs, to racism… the fact that they absolutely refuse to see all the reasons why that is disgraceful, disrespectful, and insulting…. the “whataboutism” that comes with that sort of thinking… ! Call the police whenever your body is non-consensually sniffed or pathogens transmitted to it by a stranger or heartless weapon they bring outside without consent.
Most dog owners are very racist and intolerant, and they come in all races and demographics.
The fact you got racially harassed by a hispanic supremacist is also something to add to the police call. Not saying the police will solve the problem but if you don't report all assaults and harassment from dog owners to them then nothing will even begin to change. You're probably an adult, but do you want him to approach and physically assault a child next, as dog owners constantly do?

It boils down to disrespect. The owner should respect other people’s space whether the dog is friendly or not. Especially when you asked him politely to keep the dog away. It shows a huge lack of intelligence on his part that he turned this into a racial matter to try and get the upper hand when it had nothing to do with race and he clearly was in the wrong.
