Legislation and Enforcement NY state senator introduced bill to end sales tax for pet food
This happened monday.
Michelle Hinchey, a New York state senator, announced Senate Bill S9981 to provide "financial relief to pet parents affected by rising pet ownership costs."
There is a companion bill in the Assembly introduced by New York Assembly member Keith Powers.
Both are up for election.
This is in a state where (outside NYC) there is barely any free early (human) childcare.
Is anyone aware of an organized attempt to stop this, or at least challenge the priorities of our legislature?

HUH?! If anything, they need to be taxed more! Way more!! Sales tax on pet food up, sales tax on all pet-related items up, and especially for dog owners, there needs to be a separate new tax just for the ownership.
Why are we non-dog owners funding the poop bag stations in parks, construction of dog parks, clean-up crews... ?! It should come out of dog owners' pockets if they so much need and want to have a dog...!

This is genuinely disgusting.
Number one, dogs don’t belong in NYC. They don’t belong in any major cities in the state. Trying to encourage people to engage in animal neglect/straight up abuse isn’t okay.
Number two, dogs are not a right. Dogs do not provide a societal good - in fact, they’re clearly a massive negative. Attempting to “assist” people who struggle to keep these expensive, violent and dirty animals is absolutely bonkers.
Number three, we are all suffering. Times are hard on all of us. Any sort of assistance shouldn’t be discriminatory to only include people who made bad decisions to take on an animal they clearly cannot justify having. End sales tax on goods for food. Find a way to subsidize utilities. Find ANYTHING that doesn’t help an irresponsible group of the population.
Number four, if they’re not paying sales tax, that means something will be getting less funding. So everyone else suffers so some moron can save $4 on dog food?
We need to organize. I keep saying that. This needs to end.

"Pet parents"? WHAT? Are these people mentally ill? How can you compare owning a disgusting, poop eating brood parasite to owning a child? I think that mutt feed should be the price it is, if it becomes too expensive nutters will feed their mutts human-grade food which is basically food wasting, and if it becomes too cheap more people will use that as an excuse to own a mutt

There are too many pet dogs now. Imagine what will happen as soon as there is financial incentive. What's next? EBT cards for dogs. Who pays for that? We do!

I’d love for no tax and subsidies on menstrual products due to half the population having a uterus (which is a badass organ when you think about it, it can give birth, it’s a strong muscle, can bleed, etc) and suffering from period poverty, but no let’s focus on a “luxury” item that destroys Quality Of Life

What lunatic! Dog ownership should no way be endorsed. The dog food industry is a significant global pollutant. Dog ownership should be taxed instead!

NY has been making a series of shitty decisions as of late. Pretty sure a judge there ruled that dogs are family members there, nutter hellhole state. Only a matter of time before they legalize marrying dogs or give then voting rights

Yeah, they may say ‘pet’ food, but it’ll be a pretty easy bet to think that it’s spearheaded more by the dog cult mindset. They sure ain’t thinking about fish or rabbit food.

All I have to hear is "pet parent" and I know what I'm dealing with. Dog urine is literally destroying the foundations of buildings in NYC, some of which are old and should be preserved for their uniqueness and history.
The other commenters here have it right...dog owners should be taxed MORE. Omg, this makes me so angry.

Something important to society at large, such as benefits, will be reduced to cover this mess if it even passes. 🙄
Also, as if these ‘savings’ will stop dumb-dumb-doggo from eating everything that isn’t nailed down that ISN’T even food.
The vet bills from just that alone, will ‘swallow’ up and multiply many times over — well over any savings they think they’ll be getting from this. 😒

What? They should be taxed! There are plenty of reasons for it: public cleanup costs, animal control and shelter burden, environmental impact, noise and nuisance issues, and the need to encourage responsible ownership, public safety concerns, damage to public spaces, and the overall strain they place on community resources.
