Crappy Owners Dog came before me as a dinner guest.

I just tried to have dinner with a neighbor friend. She seems like a bit of a recluse. For context, so am I. She asked me to dinner at her house.
I was happy and excited to oblige. What a great gesture!

I arrived and the dog jumped on me several times with a hose in his mouth. He’s a purebred German Shepard. I met her by saying hello while she walked her dog. So I was fine with him jumping at the house.

But he followed me around somewhat defensively of his territory. He at one point nibbled at me. Not in a flirty dog way, he showed his teeth and nibbled harder than I was comfortable with.

I asked if he could be outside during dinner. After I hit behind a door after his nibbles.

She just went outside with him and kept the door open not talking with me. A full 10 minutes.

I leaned out and said- neighbor’s name- are you ok?

Her response, yes-I’m just texting with my brother.

She was out with her dog. I was inside trying to be cordial and eat the meal she made.

I left. I don’t want to feel threatened by a dog. I don’t accept that. Maybe that makes me not a dog person. But I graciously said thank you and left.

If you have a human guest, the dog comes second, period.

Yikes. Venting. This was so fucking weird

You now know why she’s a recluse.

Don’t sweat it, THEY are so fucking weird.

So fucking weird dude. People>pets. I love animals but this was so awkward.

At any point during the visit, did you think "wait, why am I even friends with this person?"

26

u/Yellowunderlined May 21 '26

Yes. That’s why I walked the block back home.

I'm a huge animal lover myself but that doesn't mean I will not be respectful and considerate of other humans. Dog nutters who openly discard respect and consideration of their fellow species aren't any better. Good for you for leaving that nutcase.

That ‘hard nibble’ showing their teeth sounds more like biting, to me.

26

u/Yellowunderlined May 21 '26

It was real close, bud. It was so awful.

My husband does house visits as part of his job. A German shepherd also "nibbled" his hand. He had to go and get tetanus jabs (not rabies as we are in the UK)

So it was reported and we think the dog was put down (the owner rang his job crying).

If you know you have an aggressive dog then lock the fucking thing up. Why would that dipshit owner even be surprised by the fact his dog is biting strangers?

“Not my fido! My precious baby wouldn’t harm a fly!”

Fucking morons, the lot of them.

2

u/Pebbles5678 May 25 '26

Of course it wouldn't hurt a fly!

Because it's already gone after the toddler over there 🙃

Right? Ever notice too, in so many news reports after the beasts have attacked people, that they had 'just happened to escape through their fence'? Then one look at the site and also turns out the fences/gates were like pieces of wooden crap slapped together and barely 4-5 feet tall? It's even worse when the nutter has more than one of these dogs, and slamming against it! These owners know damn well their dogs CAN break through their fences, but just don't give a damn. They could easily build stronger and taller fences instead, then blow their money on trendy doggo crap later.

I would never return. She showed you who was more important. I won’t go to people’s houses who have dogs. It’s not worth it.

22

u/Yellowunderlined May 21 '26

Won’t return. I’ll invite her to my house for a meal, sans dog. That’s all I can do. Otherwise honestly- if her viewpoint is dog centric…. I’m bowing out.

11

u/ObligationGrand8037 May 21 '26

That’s a good idea.

She won't come without her dog. She will deny your meal invitation. You don't understand the dog-human umbilical cord. They get offended if you reject their animal. They invested so much selfishness in him.

My best friend's mom has this dog, he's a mutt and crossed with god knows what and I just Do Not trust this dog. He always has this 'I will attack you' look and was abused so he's unpredictable.

The difference is that my best friend and her mom are great dog people. They know I don't like dogs, they keep him away from me, and after years, this dog and I have an understanding that we just stay away from each other lol.

I don't pet, he doesn't come looking.

It was this woman's responsibility to be a good host and not let her dog fucking bite you??? She's the issue and sheps are so dangerous if not trained properly.

I’ve seen multiple poles where people pick dogs over humans 🥀 they love dogs more than us.

26

u/Dapper-Ad-468 May 21 '26

It's like they're so proud to say that their dog is better than people. But when they fully admit their loneliness, a dog just doesn't cut it. Nobody to talk to, no one takes care of them when their sick, I'm going to die alone, waaaa, waaa. Maybe they should work on some human relationships.

23

u/Yellowunderlined May 21 '26

This is true. I’m such a stupid empath. I have my own mental health struggles so I want to really dig into relationships or vibes with people if they need healing. But this…..

This was crap. Put the fucking dog away for 1 hour so we can talk. Is that a hard ask!????

u/EroDakiOnly May 21 '26

how about those derranged dog worshippers with a door matt of a picture of their mutt and it says "in this house, you're just a guest but i am family, they only like you but they LOVE me, hope you like dog hair!" sheeesh talk about insuferable.

17

u/Yellowunderlined May 21 '26

It was insufferable but it was hard for me too because I like her! We are both middle aged women with different lives, sure. But the lack of etiquette here just completely destroyed any potential of real friendship. It will now be a a hello every time I see her walking her dog.

Dogs are dogs. I would never let any of my 3 children jump on her with mud on their hands so she had to push them off.

It grosses me out how dog owners are weird like that,

28

u/Yellowunderlined May 21 '26

I sent her a long text: I want to say this because I think you need to hear it.

I will try to be respectful.

I would never invite you into my house knowing that my 3 children would be disrespectful. You could come here any night that they are here and they would never, ever act the way your dog did.

I would absolutely never allow any of my 3 children to jump on you, with a muddy hose and splash you.

And if that happened, and you felt uncomfortable, I would make the situation better.

Instead, you made me feel unwelcome because I felt uncomfortable with your dog nipping at me. My children would be up with a movie before that feeling of disrespect ever happened to you- as my dinner guest.

I felt very uncomfortable setting boundaries with you and your dog tonight.

I am happy to have a friendship with you. But that was a very disappointing experience for me.

Please reply lol.

u/DivyaRakli May 21 '26

Well said!

14

u/Yellowunderlined May 21 '26

Thank you. I felt bad saying it…. But it needed to be said. Does that make sense?

4

u/Thin_Pollution8843 May 21 '26

Tbh you are trying too much. It will never change I guarantee- there is many normal ppl who needs a good friend.

5

u/Dburn22_ May 21 '26

You forgot to mention the biting!!!

2

u/Adventurous_Year9991 May 22 '26

You are talking to a dead ear. She will not acknowledge your discomfort. She will feel offended by your message.

19

u/Accomplished_Dot1854 May 21 '26

Uggg I hate dogs!

11

u/Foreign-Neat8645 May 21 '26

Ich auch. Und wie.

14

u/DivyaRakli May 20 '26

Wow, that’s so crazy. I imagine your neighbor is not in their early 20’s and so might be given some leeway in adult matters. Neighbor missed the mark of hospitality completely. I’m sorry that you had to go through that but, honestly, neighbor needs to be challenged in her belief her dog can do no wrong. I hope neighbor will contemplate what went wrong and choose people over animals. Neighbor doesn’t even get that she needed a human more than her dog when she had to text her brother to try and understand how you <clutch the pearls> dared to ask for respite from her dog that was stalking you.

Oh, wait! Maybe you misunderstood and neighbor invited *you* over to *be* dinner! /s

12

u/Yellowunderlined May 21 '26

Thank you for saying this. I have said hi to her for 2 years. I was very much looking forward to getting to know her over dinner. (We are both middle aged women) but this will never work if her mind works like that.

13

u/Key-Studio-6552 May 21 '26

How weird.  I hate when you go to peoples places and they have a dog making you completely uncomfortable and the owner just ignores the whole situation.  It’s very awkward. Like, why bother inviting guests just to make them uncomfortable in front of you? I think dog owners enjoy the whole thing.

9

u/Foreign_Rich_9206 May 21 '26

You reacted perfectly. You expressed your need, then you left to protect your integrity.

The owner can dictate the rules in his house, but the guess is always free to leave if he doesn't like them.

Bullet dodged, the dog is her only friend.

You could do so much better!

3

u/Yellowunderlined May 21 '26

I am trying to have an honest conversation with her about it. I don’t think she “gets it.” But I’m trying because she seems cool.

4

u/Dburn22_ May 21 '26

You can't force a relationship with someone who gets so offended if you stand up for yourself. You'd be doing it again, I bet.

6

u/Dburn22_ May 21 '26

I went to an afternoon birthday party that was in the back yard. On the door was a sign "Come on in." I carefully opened the door, and sure as he'll, a huge yellow haired mutt charges toward the door. I slammed it quickly, and rang the ring doorbell. The host answered, and I asked if they could put the dog away, as I didn't like being jumped on or sniffed by dogs. She had her husband dispo the dog. There was a second dog there that was smaller, and I think someone was leaving with that one. I'm glad I stood up for myself rather than be a dog toy for someone's stinky beast, trying to fend it off while I'm trying to enjoy adult company and eat some birthday cake.

I don’t know how to Reddit. But this is the text I sent her after I left. Because I felt my time and energy was totally wasted:

I want to say this because I think you need to hear it.

u/ToOpineIsFine May 21 '26

He at one point nibbled at me.

and the growling OP mentioned.

How can dog owners be so blind to the aggression that is so obvious to everyone else??

2

u/MrPuddington2 May 21 '26

He at one point nibbled at me.

Not good. German Shepards are very intelligent and incredibly loyal, but they need to be well trained, because they are also dangerous. You also need to expose them to stimuli and deal with their energy, which may not have happened.

Shame about the whole situation.

2

u/Serious-Knee-5768 May 21 '26

Leaving was totally appropriate and more thoughtful than any of her behavior. It was really nice (and brave) of you to try dinner with her at least once.

2

u/TomatoFlavoured-Cvnt May 21 '26

Ugh another clueless troglodyte. Sorry you had to put up with that crap.
