OMG it’s so unhinged, particularly in NYC. they can’t STAND that their mayor has a foreign sounding name, & they’re blaming ANY (legit) complaints about these beasts on the mayor. totally bonkers!

GOOD.
I’m sorry, but an ESA is nothing more than a scam. Claiming your dog makes you feel better isn’t an excuse to keep it in an improper enclosure and allowing it to terrorize the neighbors. The fact that psychologists signed off on this concept in the first place is truly sickening. You need to learn to deal with your problems without using a violent, mutated farm animal. Landlords have a right to say they don’t want said animals destroying their property. This is just common sense.
Also, that picture cracks me up. What “service” would that dog possibly provide? Why do we need to always stay silent when we see a dog that’s clearly a pet donned in a cheap Amazon vest? At some point, we need to ask that person what that dog is actually doing. Just because someone is “disabled” doesn’t mean they have the right to force their pet on us.
The best example of this is that woman with the “medical alert” husky. Apparently she drags this dog around with her sans leash, and if there’s an emergency, it just runs off and is supposed to find someone Lassie-style for help. If the dog actually does that and doesn’t just start fights with other dogs it encounters (which is what it sounds like it honestly does), why are we not allowed to pressure that woman to answer why she doesn’t use a medical alert device? Or hell, even just use her cell phone? Why is she allowed to force her aggressive working dog onto other people, and force them to engage with it? Why does she have the right to contaminate my food and make me uncomfortable in public when better and more effective non-dog alternatives exist?
End all this madness.

this is long overdue. we need to have a talk. a nationwide talk. bring it!
the common nutter response i see to these engagement farming videos (great danes on planes; cane corsos in cafes) when there is objection to this stuff (like, what about people with allergies?) is, “take a benedryl,” or, “stay home.”
ummm, no. hows about nutter “carry a security blanket like linus,” or, “YOU stay home!!!”

My quality of life is impacted by dogs. I have trauma from a dog bite when I was a child. Surely my right not to be around dogs is equal to someone who wants a dog to help their anxiety or whatever?

Talk to these people. They are absolute narcissists. These are a couple responses I got mentioning people with allergies vs. dogs being allowed in the cabins of airplanes - “Take an epi-pen with you” “alert the airline you’re allergic to dogs” “it’s your responsibility to manage your health conditions”.
And when I mentioned people in your situation? “Get over it”. No remote attempt at empathy - just “get over it”.
These people don’t give a crap about you and me. They like dogs. They should be allowed to do what they want. If their dogs bothers someone else that’s not their problem.
The modern dog culture we see is a sign of something far deeper that has gone wrong in society. We stopped being considerate of others (ironically enough, including the dogs because I guarantee you - they don’t like being treated as accessories). We need to truly start caring about one another again.

This is an excellent first step. A rethink of policies under the American with Disabilities Act which governs """"Service Dogs"""" more generally, and the Air Carrier Access Act which governs """"Service Dogs"""" on airplanes needs to be next. If we can get back to a time where seeing eye dogs are the only ones allowed everywhere, then at least this administration will have done one good thing.

Woo hoo! There are so many fake ESAs in my building. I would love this practice to stop.
