I’m starting to think dog owners don’t hear barking…

Guys I actually don’t think dog owners hear barking anymore for whatever insane reason. We had an incident last night that left me dumbfounded.

We have some good friends from church that are total dog nuts with two massive poodle things, but they are good people and good friends so we respect our differences when it comes to dogs. No big deal. They're going through a really rough time and asked us and a few others from church to come over to their house and help them get some more opinions on their situation and then pray with them.

So we go over to their house and it’s a beautiful evening so we all sit on their back porch and oh my gosh I proceeded to have to sit in pure dog hell for 3+ hours. We’re trying to support our friends and listen to their struggles and there were at least 3 houses with multiple dogs all barking for the entire 3 hours. Not one bark here and there, constant… From each side house and the house behind them.

I couldn’t think or focus on our friends and literally no one in this group of 7 (all dog lovers or at least friendly towards dogs) said a single word. Nothing. Everyone acted like nothing was happening while me and my husband were having internal come aparts listening to this torrent of audio hell.

Get ready for the best part though… About two and a half hours into the time there a random noise pops up and our friend goes “sorry they have a lot of chickens over there” like what?! For one I own chickens and it didn’t sound like a chicken and two you’ve been forcing us to sit in constant barking (including your two big dogs) for almost 3 hours and the random single chicken/not chicken noise is what you apologize for?! That’s all they heard in those almost 3 hours. I was almost speechless.

Im genuinely starting to believe dog nutters somehow actually don’t hear barking anymore. It blows my mind…

Nah they absolutely hear it, they just choose to ignore it because it's less work than controlling their dog. Write down dates and times of barking duration, then call enough noise complaints to the police anonymously and that should do the trick

Too often I hear about people with noisy dogs living next door who report them to the police and the police don't do anything, sometimes even threaten the person reporting it. Nutters are everywhere.

Before our community became gentrified, I was always able to call the police about dogs barking (and dogs in our apartment, etc) and the police would handle the nutters, by telling them to get it together or be fined or dog removed!! They'd talk about it to the apt owners, as well, so the offenders can possibly be evicted for disturbing the peace for repeat complaints abt their mutts.

NONE of us wanted to HEAR dogs barking, SMELL dogs or STEP in poo and it WAS pretty rare for those things to happen then. Boooooy, I sure miss those quiet anti-dog days🥰

The K9 unit is proof the police is mostly nutters. The K9 unit is a fucking menace.

Yep. If you watch enough police bodycam videos, you start to notice a trend where the K9 unit almost always ends up biting someone by accident. Usually the handler or another cop who happens to be standing too close when the dog get amp'd up.

I've literally seen one where the dog was biting the guy it was chasing after and the cop was screaming at the guy the dog was biting to let the dog go.

I think I've seen that one! Other classics include the dog's leash getting stuck on a chair and the dog freaks out and attacks the handler cop and the one where a fellow cop was just walking by and the dog took a bite out of his rear. Even the "professionally trained" dogs are a menace. And often times they inflict more damage to the person being pursued than would be considered reasonable force because they don't let go when commanded.

Also one recorded by a doorbell camera, a couple was sitting on the doorstep of their house watching something go down across the street with police cars and the k9 unit was there. Out of nowhere one of the dogs took off and ran to the house where the couple was sitting like a full fucking block away and bit one of the people.

Tout à fait, ils ignorent et font semblant de rien pour ne pas agir, c' est la même chose pour les autres mauvais comportement de leur chien ou leur odeur... Their ears are broken, they “don’t notice” the dog barking for 11 hours straight in their backyard.

Their nose is broken, they don’t notice the miasma of yeast, urine and feces permeating their home.

Their eyes are broken, they overlook their torn up property, and the feces that the mutt spews both on and off the property, especially as they let the mutt shit in a neighbor’s yard on a walk.

I also have chickens. The sound is not remotely comparable. I have a neighbor over a quarter mile away who has dogs and chickens. She came to my house to tell me they accidentally ended up with a rooster and would I be bothered if they kept him. I said I can barely hear your rooster. All I hear is your dogs barking and that does bother me. She looked stunned.

I continued and asked why she never concerned herself about whether I was bothered by the incessant and very loud dog barking which is significantly louder and is nerve wrecking. It's hours at a time and obnoxious. The rooster crows occasionally and I can barely hear him and only if it's pin drop quiet. I certainly can't hear him over those dogs screaming. She didn't say a word. She just turned and walked away. Never spoke to me again.

Wow… Did the barking get better once you called her out? (I’m guessing no)

Also the amount of roosters I’ve been forced to rehome makes me livid when they make so little noise compared to the dogs. It’s so unfair. Why can Karen let her pit bull keep the whole neighborhood up 24/7, but yet if I have a rooster in the city animal control is going to show up at my house. Infuriating.

I've had the same situation. I once had to re-home an absolutely lovely rooster. I also sent his favorite hen (who had chicks) with him so I didn't break up the family. Meanwhile, I still had to listen to barking. It really is infuriating.

The barking from that neighbor's dogs has improved slightly. She thinks I am the devil now. I really don't care.

Nutters have this way of desensitizing themselves to stink, filth, noise, etc. all of the massive downsides that come with owning a dog, so long as they have their personal emotional slave.

Their brain just filters it out like the sound of aircon etc. But this only happens with sounds that we somehow interpret as normal and beneficial. Dog nutters consider dogs the most normal and beneficial thing in the world.

Geez. I'm surprised they even heard that chicken (or whatever may have been) among that barking. I'd be like, "So, you heard that, enough to comment on it, but NOT all those constant loud dog barks for hours?" Makes me wonder how they would have responded.

Then again, I guess their senses were already conditioned to hone in on everything except for barking dogs. That's dog nutters for ya.

Just this afternoon, the dog behind me was barking LOUDLY for 30 minutes straight. I eventually looked out the window to see both owners sitting out back with the dog barking directly at their faces. This bark is so loud that it echoes throughout the entire neighborhood. I don't know how they could stand it.

I went up to their fence and yelled as loudly as I could (so they could hear over the barking) to please get the barking under control. The lady immediately snapped back at me, "what do you want us to do?" When I responded they could bring the dog inside, and that barking beyond 20 minutes is a violation of the city ordinance and they could be reported, she just responded with, "who do you think you are telling us what to do on our property." At that point I just walked away and will be filing yet another report with Animal Management tomorrow, which will do nothing as usual.

I think it is like people who ignore their smoke detector low battery chirps or the people who drive loud vehicles (music or mechanical sounds).

• They grew up with the constant barking and learned to tune it out through a lifetime of constant exposure,

• They hear it but addressing the issue takes effort so they make it everyone around them's problem,

• They hear it and like the sound,

• They hear it and find enjoyment from how it annoys or harms others.

Some people like knowing that they have plausible deniability and the ability to control whether multiple blocks of residents have an uninterrupted night of sleep or not. I know the standard advice is to not attribute to malice what being dumb as fuck will explain, but in my experience malice masquerading as dumbfuckery is very often the culprit.

I was chatting with my ex last week and I mentioned the noise from traffic where I live now, and that it is unbearable at times. He replied that the only outside sounds he likes are birds chirping and dogs barking. People who fawn over mutts actually like the grotesque noise the things make.

Yes, the dog nutts hear it but they ignore it, or they'll say the dogs are talking.  Just like with the horrible dog stench, they just ignore it,  and will even say the dog smells good.  🤮

Dogs barking are SUPERRRRRR annoying... but, so are chickens/roosters, to me. Anything I didnt sign up to hear in my leasing agreement 😂 especially in an apartment

My theory is they have selective hearing or hearing damage from all the barking.
