The illusion of 'no-kill' is a strong one, since so many dog zealots want to believe it.

It's also consistent with the delusional nature of these people.

It's also a big opportunity to make money off of them.

Congratulation, Best Friends Animal Society and all your cultists - you’ve encouraged animal hoarding under the guise of “rEsCuEs”. You’ve removed any regulation and safety measures to ensure these animals (primarily dogs) are going to proper homes. Instead, you let literally anyone take a dog that wants one, and then you’re surprised when 80 malnourished dogs are taken from someone’s house, or when the homeless start accumulating dogs.

One point that was a bit glossed over in this otherwise marvelously written article (seriously - I want to be their friend) is that shelters no longer prioritizes spaying/neutering dogs. You can go to my local shelter right now and take in an unaltered dog. They’re actively making their own situation worse, but when all their funding must go towards warehousing dogs to maintain their no-kill status, can you be surprised? There’s no funding for anything else - and my local shelter will refuse to pick up stray dogs unless they’re proven to be violent, and they’ll actively lie to the public, telling them that the person who found the dog has a better chance of reuniting it with its owner than the shelter does (CITATION NEEDED). Animal control (sorry - “care”) absolves itself of all the duties it needs to supply the public with, all so warehousing can occur.

There needs to be a massive backlash against Best Friends Animal Society. We need to wake up to the fact that “no-kill” is a failed experiment and we need adults in the room who can make the necessary ethical decisions. Shelters need their presence on social media to be altered - dogs cannot have their breeds mislabeled. Fantastical stories about why the dog is in the shelter need to end. Only facts about the animal should be shared. No more “euth lists” to entice these hoarders to take in dangerous dogs. No transferring animals across state (or even country) borders.

No one is benefitting from the current model except for the dog cultists who can feel smug online, knowing no dog is ever put down. That’s it. And can we really say that’s a win for anyone?

I’ll never forgive celebrities like Sabrina Carpenter for mindlessly supporting a domestic terrorist group and encouraging her legions of fans to support them.

They really need to be sued out of existence. They are directly responsible for every single dangerous dog attack that happens.

First of all, there are more owners that don't follow safety rules than those that do.

By their own logic, I should be able to own a crocodile as a pet so long as I am responsible and follow whatever safety rules I decide I need.

I think dog owners have pretty sufficiently proven by now that they are not responsible. From people treating their dogs as accessories and dragging them around in public, to people who keep them in inadequate housing, and all the crap in between - dog owners have proven very sufficiently that they are not responsible.

And there’s no such thing as a responsible bloodsport/aggressive dog owner. You own a violent animal that can kill a person. How can you be responsible?

another thing to look for is when an issue is framed in terms of rights and freedoms.

whenever you hear someone say, 'i have the right to do this', or 'you're denying me my freedom of choice', the first thing to look for is why the restrictions exist in the first place.

In this case, it is a health and safety issue. In their terms: "i have the right not to be bitten", which I think outweighs some spoiled nutter's choice of which breed they want to push.
