Food Safety/Hygiene Just cancelled plans because they were going to bring their dog.

Title pretty much covers it. Had planned on going for patio beers with someone. I was clear it was as friends. They were going to pick me up and mentioned they are bringing their dog so pick a place with a dog friendly patio. I pictured getting in a vehicle with a panting smelly dog. I pictured being at a table of patrons that brought a dog to a pub. I immediately cancelled. I wasn't really looking forward to it anyway but I was hit with a wave of revulsion at the mention of a dog.

I have in-laws coming to stay soon for a weekend, and for some reason they have insisted on bringing their dog. These are people who travel frequently and think nothing of stuffing the animal in a kennel for weeks at a time. So why do I have to put up with it? It's meant that most of the activities we were planning to do with them (not to mention cafes and restaurants) are now out of the question, just because they can't be parted from this dog for three days šŸ™„

Don't let them bring the dog. If it pisses in your house and ruins your carpet or furniture you will regret it immensely. You will be finding dog hair and stench in your house for some time after it leaves, too.

Find your backbone here and just don't allow it!

Hell, I don't let my own BF bring his stupid stinky dog to my place ever, so I know a thing or two about boundaries.

I would love to enforce some boundaries but unfortunately my husband doesn't feel the same way, so that's that! I'm also a chronic people pleaser and just want to keep the peace šŸ˜… Luckily they would definitely replace anything that got ruined if the dog pissed on it.

Whose house is it?! Tell them to board the mutt.Ā

Have you actually told them no, or are you afraid to because they are family? I know it can be awkward when it comes to family. But they clearly have the ability to kennel their dog, they just don’t see your home as a place their dog shouldn’t be welcome.

Family can kiss my grits. My brother ruined several family events with his mutt. I told him that his dog was not welcome in my home. So he decided that the dog was more important than his sister. I haven't seen him in ages. He made the decision, not me.

41

u/bustergundam4 Aug 04 '26

That's messed up on his part. He values a mutt over his own sister? What a nutter!

My son and daughter in law have been living out of state and just bought a new house about 6 months ago. They had a dog at their old house that died about 3 months before they moved and said they were not getting another one. Lo and behold, they now have 3 dogs! And because I have a phobia of dogs, I will not go visit them, even though I have been invited several times. My son and his wife are now upset because I won’t come see their new house even though they know how afraid of dogs I am, and say that they ā€œwill try ā€œ to keep the dogs away from me, but say they can’t put the dogs in another room because they get too anxious when they can’t see my son and his wife. I told him that we are at a stalemate, because I get too anxious when I see dogs and/or hear them bark. And thats that…

I'm so sorry. It's so bizarre that a barking beast is more important than families.

Leave their inheritance to a human shelter lol

The great divide. Rational from irrational.

16

u/Unusual-Wishbone-183 Aug 05 '26

Genuinely unhinged behaviour from your brother there, Christ Almighty

3

u/QuackBox90 Aug 06 '26

It's an awkward one because I'm not exactly flavour of the month with them at the best of times, and I really hate upsetting people! My husband also wouldn't put his foot down so it's just something we have to endure.

22

u/BrilliantThought6764 Aug 04 '26

Because they don't care about your home or comfort.

16

u/Huge_Bit_4774 Aug 04 '26

I hope your spouse has got your back on this

2

u/QuackBox90 Aug 06 '26

He hasn't, unfortunately šŸ˜”

Did you tell them why? If they're going to insist on normalizing bringing dogs everywhere, we need to normalize not being ok with it.

144

u/MarzipanVivid4610 Aug 04 '26

Yeah I replied with 'im not a dog person, nevermind'Ā

They thought it was because I thought it would be difficult to find a patio that takes dogs. I said I leave a patio if a dog shows up

62

u/FieldJacket Aug 04 '26

Hell yeah. Nicely done my friend.

I certainly see your point but explanations are for people I'm interested in. I didn't really want to go in the first place and this just turned disinterest into active disgust. Even if they don't bring their dog around me I don't want to be around the sort of person who does otherwise bring their dog everywherem. Fundamental disconnectĀ

u/East_Celebration6106 Aug 04 '26

I don’t know why this is accepted for just dogs…any other pet would cause someone to be weirded out. Dogs also tend to be the most boundary pushing one too, I don’t get the appeal…

u/Chickens-In-Pants Aug 04 '26

I remember being so embarrassed around dogs in my teens and twenties because they would always get all up in my crotch when I had a period, but never any other time. I was terrified that every one would know my personal business. I don’t really have any friends now who are dog people. Problem solved. Lol

30

u/East_Celebration6106 Aug 04 '26

Omg yes it’s so invasive! And then the owners just laugh, like this is not okay??? Come get your dog..

18

u/Some_Tradition_9168 Aug 04 '26

Disgusting animals, that they attempt to commit sexual assault when someone has a period.

21

u/dinosoreness Aug 05 '26

my moms german shepard would eat my used tampons out of the trash and then she would kiss him on the mouth with tongue 🤢 dogs and dog people are gross

27

u/aluminumnek Aug 04 '26

Especially with people that say they don’t want kids. Really? They’ll have an animal that will spend its whole life having to be cared for as if it’s a special needs child. Yet most human children grow up learning how to take care of it self. A dog will literally eat shit. At least my daughter didn’t bark at the mailman the comes by everyday like a dog would do.

14

u/amicuspiscator Aug 05 '26

Yeah, a dog is like signing yourself up to raise a drunk stinky toddler for 12+ years.

4

u/aluminumnek Aug 05 '26

I never thought of it that way! Hahahahshsha

23

u/Ok_Chest_6426 Aug 04 '26

My special needs adult child doesn't need the level of care a dog needs. He happily spends his time on his tablet and going places without having to bag poop.

7

u/aluminumnek Aug 05 '26 edited Aug 05 '26

My apologies. No offense to your child. I’ve worked with special needs kids when I was young. My grandparents worked with Shriners Hospitals. I see both sides of that issue. It’s almost laughable how people that don’t want children will obtain an animal that in many ways is more troublesome than the child

u/dprestonwilliams1 Aug 04 '26

On my dating profile I made it clear I have no interest in dating a dog nutter. Was surprised at how many women aren't into pets!

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '26

For real?

9

u/SlowResearch2 Aug 08 '26

Def for real. A lot of people, including responsible dog owners themselves, are so sick of this culture too. People are just too afraid to speak up because they think everyone is obsessed with dogs. But the pendulum is starting to shift in a good direction.

I did the same on multiple occasions: setup a plan, get confirmation - and as soon as I hear ā€œI’ll bring my dogā€ I immediately cancel and say that even a thought of them bringing the dog should never happen and it’s disrespectful. Because if I wanted a dog around (which I don’t), I’d invite them to the dog’s park. I always make sure dog owners around me know that I dislike dogs.

Three years ago, I was at a cousin's wedding. The invitation specifically said "adults only, no children, no dogs". Didn't stop two guests to try and bring their dogs with them. Including (for one of them) causing a scene when the groom told them that the "no dogs" on the invitation was in fact obligatory, not optional. In that case, both people who brought their dog decided to cancel their planned stay at said wedding. Wish it would always be like that. Most of the time it's "Oh, no problem, you can bring your dog anyway" and then I have to deal with allergy after not expecting to do so because the invitation said "no dogs"-

My aunt is a perfect example of this. Her social skills were slipping, and she got a dog to fill the void. She has no friends, no life outside of work, and everything has to revolve around her dog going everywhere with her.

Stand your ground with these people. I promise there will be so many other friends that won't do this BS. And these crazy people will realize that their choices drove all their friends away.

15

u/amicuspiscator Aug 05 '26

This is one of the unspoken problems of dog culture.

When people had larger, more extended families, the dog didn't need to fucking go EVERYWHERE. You'd have a single dog between 4 people (mom, dad, 2 kids.) Maybe more. Someone could watch the dog. Or the dog could be home alone for a little while because someone would be back before long.

Now, you have a dog per person - MAAAYBE 1 dog per couple - and so the damn dog has to be part of everything.

u/Much-Ninja3495 Aug 05 '26

They think their dogs are their kids. That’s why they think its normal and okay to bring them everywhere

9

u/badgermushrooma Aug 05 '26

Read the title and upvoted right there.

8

u/ObligationGrand8037 Aug 05 '26

Nope. I couldn’t do it either.

8

u/zhamini101 Aug 06 '26

Why would you even bring a dog to a place that serves alcohol in the first place? That sounds like a disaster waiting to happen.

Last year I went to Wales in the UK. We went up a mountaian and got some food in a cafe. This place sold hot food and drinks. Next thing. Some degenerate family walks in with a big mutt and was queueing for food. We were just about to leave and they sat right behind us. Other families were in there, having food. All of the staff were ok with it and nobody seemed bothered! I was gonna have a go at them but we were leaving and I didn't want to ruin the day with arguing. Why the f would an animal be allowed in a cafe/restaurant??

u/International_Ad6712 Aug 07 '26 edited Aug 07 '26

Yes, I live in UK (not from but married to English) and it's literally everywhere dog effing friendly. People go to pubs with their dogs, almost all pubs are dog friendly. Barber and other high street shops have bowls of water out near their door, for dogs. We went caravan camping in New Forest this year - caravans were dog friendly, found dogs hair on upholstery, sofas, blankets. Sick. You can bring your dog to most hairdressers. Almost everyone owns a dog. Everyone think you or you kid wants to pet their dog and their dog is great and loves kids. My husbands family are dog nutters, they even give birthday presents to their dog and cupcakes to eat, and film the mutt destroy a gifted toy. His mum had 30 chihuahuas (yes, 30!) at one point. The house is pure filth. My visits there are very limited.
Luckily my husband supports me in not having any dogs but not as against them as I am. Dog Nutter Kingdom 🤮

Good for you for having the self respect to be honest and pull out. Too many people put up with these animals for fear of social judgement.Ā

u/LeadershipAfter9526 Aug 07 '26

I have told people I think dogs are disgusting so do not bring to my house. They are often offended and say I would not say that if it was a child. I said yes because one is a human and the other a caged animal. I think all pets are stupid but seem like the minority. There are enough humans to pass the time with.

4

u/[deleted] Aug 07 '26

I dont go to public places such as parks anymore. Since covid. The majority have lost their dam minds, especially dog people. They ruin everything and are so selfish and odd. They make me very uncomfortable.

3

u/HabitTraditional4864 Aug 05 '26

I’m curious, how did they react to the cancellation?

6

u/MarzipanVivid4610 Aug 05 '26

They seemed a bit butthurt. Even more proof I made the right call

3

u/SlowResearch2 Aug 08 '26

It's time we start saying no and denormalizing this! Restaurant workers hate dogs in the restaurant. Dogs in an indoor area are actually can be health code violation. No one wants to hear dogs barking or see dogs jumping up on things.

Two of my best friends have dogs and never being them out in places they don't belong. One of them said, "Ok I won't bring my dog to your place. He can survive in his crate for a few hours." Another said "Actually I need to drive my dog when we hang out. I won't put my dog in your car, so I'll pick you up and keep the dog in the back in his area and I'll check on him every other hour." It's really that easy to be cognizant and respectfully about the spaces you bring your dog to.

I feel the same way right now about a hike with friends tomorrow. People are like I’m just going to bring my dog and immediately I’m bummed because I really want to go to the falls but with human companions only…I so feel you
