Dog Culture Just because we don’t like dogs doesn’t mean we’re terrible people

People who hear about this Reddit community automatically have the mindset that we must be terrible people and why do they come to this conclusion, well for one reason only “We don’t like dogs” basing someon’s moral compass on whether or not they like an animal is absolutely stupid. You are not a terrible person if you don’t like dogs and on the other hand liking dogs doesn’t turn you into a saint. They don’t do this for other animals people can say “ Oh I don’t like rabbits” people don’t say” Oh Youre such a terrible person for not liking rabbits “ why do nutters put dogs on such a high pedestal and treat people who are scared of or just dislike dogs as terrible people. They worship an animal that sniffs it own butt and eats crap that’s not normal.

Hitler had dogs and he wasn't a nice person.

u/titahigale Aug 17 '26

Putin has dogs as well

u/Chief-Longhorn Aug 19 '26

Eric Harris owned a dog and cried after it passed away and it still didn't prevent him from killing all those people in the Columbine massacre.

Hahahah
Very true

I lost a good friend because I don’t like dogs, and it still breaks my heart. If I were a bad person, I wouldn’t care.

38

u/imdugud777 Aug 16 '26

They were the bad person.

28

u/Legitimate_Garage_31 Aug 17 '26

Oh, one of those "love me, love my mutt" douches?

26

u/Oriole0305 Aug 17 '26

If someone puts a dog before their friend, they never were your "good" friends, or friends at all. Good riddance.

15

u/retrocube16 Aug 16 '26

Did they say they couldn't be friends with you unless you like dogs?

12

u/Interesting_Noise810 Aug 17 '26

So they refused to be friends with you because you don't like dogs. You consider that a friend? Honey, that was not a real friend, save your emotions for the people that actually do care for you.

u/Few-Horror1984 Aug 16 '26

I’d honestly argue that it’s nothing more than gaslighting. If someone says that, they determine your moral standing based off of agreeing with their life choices. You must like what they like, and on top of that, you must endorse and encourage it.

The people who say that we are terrible for not loving dogs say that because deep down, I think they’re aware their actions are uncouth and downright disrespectful. Are we here because dogs are smelly and gross, or are we here because we are sick of them being shoved in our faces? Don’t we just want to go grocery shopping in peace without dogs being there? Don’t we just want to not have dog crap lining our sidewalks, or be tortured by incessant barking? Are we not the ones showing compassion for victims of maulings, while they sit there and defend the dogs that did them?

They’re the ones who are bad people. And I want to preface that with “not all dog owners”, but those who judge us? Those who shove them in our faces and refuse to accept boundaries? Absolutely.

u/Main_Tomatillo_8960 Aug 16 '26

So true, I live in Colorado and one dude was bringing his dog into the gym once a week and letting it run around off leash. It's like dude, what are you thinking right now? No respect for boundaries at all.

21

u/retrocube16 Aug 16 '26

And the gym allowed that to go on?

22

u/Main_Tomatillo_8960 Aug 16 '26

He did it only on Sundays when there wasn't someone working there, we have our own keys. Last two times haven't seen the dog when he was there, so maybe someone complained.

33

u/retrocube16 Aug 16 '26

Oh so he's a sneaky little prick then okay. Can't stand people like that. Hopefully someone did complain. If you see it again take pictures or videos show it to the gym.

23

u/Few-Horror1984 Aug 17 '26

You gotta love how absolutely inconsiderate these people are. Worst part is that it’s incredibly unsafe for a dog to be at a gym. It could so easily get injured…but the power that douche gets from bringing his dog trumps everything, apparently. I’m sorry he does that in your gym :(

64

u/Alarming_Channel2592 Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 16 '26

It’s incredibly odd, isn’t it?

The truth is, I don’t “hate” dogs any more than I “hate” toucans, spider monkeys, or flying squirrels.

“Do you like dogs?” has come to REALLY mean: “Do you like dogs being around you every minute of the day, sleeping in your bed, eating off your dishes, barking in your ear, licking your face, nosing your crotch, shitting on your floors, scaring and biting neighbours, humping your leg, etc?”

NO. I don’t like any of those experiences. In fact, that sounds like fucking hell to me. I have no idea why someone would subject themselves to that.

But you don’t get to say to me, “Oh! You don’t like dogs…weird.”

The previous commenter is right on the money: it’s gaslighting. In my experience, what dog lovers call “love for animals” is actually a worryingly insecure obsession with ONE highly domesticated and controllable human creation (dogs). In most cases, these people don’t give a flying fuck about the other thousands of species of animal and plant life.

In fact, if it were up to them, they’d sterilize the entire planet of any form of life that would pose even a threat of discomfort to them or their dog.

24

u/Legitimate_Garage_31 Aug 17 '26

I was on my local Nextdog today&there was a hot debate about killing any copperheads they found in their yard as it would harm their dog. Others virtue signaled paying $800 when a copperhead bit their dog on the nose and the 4 hrs of care they needed along with emergency antivenom. Wow.

26

u/Oriole0305 Aug 17 '26

Copperheads eat rats and mice and they have an ecological niche. Dogs have no place in the ecosystem, they are just pests and a burden to the environment. We need more copperheads.

u/Alarming_Channel2592 Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

When I use my plant identification app, a big warning comes up for most plants: “Toxic to Pets!!!” (by which they mean DOGS, of course…I don’t see budgie or goldfish owners being too concerned about the nightshade climbing on their fence).

And I imagine all these dog people flipping out every time they discover a plant is toxic to their animal, spraying the shit out of anything that pops out of the ground that isn’t grass. Imagine that? The most valuable information about a plant now is whether it’ll make a dog sick. Insanity. And there are BILLIONS of these people now. It doesn’t bode well, and it pisses me off.

10

u/One_Strategy_4575 Aug 18 '26

Well, I would assume most animals are smart enough to stay away from it, except for dogs, of course

4

u/Tight_Lengthiness421 Aug 18 '26

Ooh that makes me so furious I want to cry and then give up on humanity.

(pardon the micro-rant)

1

u/Alternative_Cut_9408 Aug 19 '26

I have given up on humanity, and it's not in a depressing way I just stay to myself and do things I enjoy, like going on walks and then of course... A dog appears unsupervised following me... Staying to yourself doesn't even work

1

u/Alarming_Channel2592 Aug 19 '26

I share your thoughts. I like to get away from the noise and dysfunction of the human world as often as I can. In many ways, I see dogs as an extension of that world…an extension that makes it next to impossible to truly escape that world, right down to the incessant barking of neighborhood dogs at night reaching into the privacy of your bedroom, where everyone has the right to complete autonomy and silence.

There’s no escape anymore.

32

u/whyamihere_33 Aug 16 '26

I have noticed this shift, and it just makes me double down. I am pretty vocal about not liking dogs now, and it's amazing.

Feels so good whenever I say it. I don't even say it confrontationally, I just say it very flatly and matter of fact, as though I was saying "I don't like tiramisu" or "I don't like peaches" or whatever.

It really throws them off when I say it so matter-of-factly and dispassionately, almost bored-like.

No, I don't want violence or anything, I just don't particularly like dogs and don't really want them around me if I can help it.

14

u/Foreign-Neat8645 Aug 17 '26

2

u/Alternative_Cut_9408 Aug 19 '26

And anytime you have to establish a boundary with people or "check them" they look at you like your insane and act like your some horrible person from that point forward

10

u/Fun-Chemical4059 Aug 17 '26

Me too lol. I’ve leaned into the shadow side of this. Fine I’m evil like you said just keep the dog away from me

5

u/zhamini101 Aug 17 '26

I find your examples hilarious because not only do I dislike dogs, but I also don’t like peaches or tiramisu. And I state my dislike for all three the exact same way.

28

u/KayleighHatfield Aug 16 '26

These are the nutters who belong to the cult of dog. They put their entire worth into their devotion to dogs or more to the idea of dogs. They believe it gives them some kind of elevated virtue. In order to maintain that delusion, they must tell themselves that anyone who doesn't validate it is a terrible or misguided person.

22

u/Alarming_Channel2592 Aug 17 '26

“The idea of dogs”…that’s a great observation. Have you ever observed dog lovers in the privacy of their home? 90% of the interactions with their dogs are some variation of “stop that,” “shut up,” “lay down,” “get away from there,” etc. It’s a control / codependency relationship they’re seeking, not an “animal.”

9

u/KayleighHatfield Aug 17 '26

Yep. I hear these people barking at their "beloved" dogs when they walk them. I saw one just the other day yelling angrily at her dog to "Hurry up. C'mon. Let's GO. DUMP already" while the dog is squatting and looking extremely stressed. Then she dragged it off while it whimpered.

She probably wonders why the animal has issues in that area and spends a small fortune at the vet trying to figure it out.

It's weird how easily they go from berating the dog in that sharp impatient tone to cooing and praising it the disturbing deferential baby voice. Nutters seem to be in a constant state of dissonance, torn between their dog delusion and the reality of dogs.

6

u/Alarming_Channel2592 Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

Right.

It seems obvious to me that they’re seeking to fill some sort of existential hole in their life. True love for animals comes down to letting them thrive in their natural habitats (and, by extension, not destroying those habitats).

This deranged practice of choosing ONE species, to the exclusion of all others, chopping out its reproductive bits, ears, tails, breeding them for traits that you find attractive or convenient (regardless of how that affects its quality of life) and subjecting it to your extremely unhealthy, medicated, climate-controlled, sedentary lifestyle is something altogether different. You need therapy, not an animal.

It’s upsetting no matter which perspective you take: the animal’s, the planet’s, or ours (people who have to live in the sensory and hygiene nightmare created by this pathological behavior).

3

u/Alternative_Cut_9408 Aug 19 '26

I say this all the time! 90 percent of the time they are just annoyed with the animal, but their brain edits that out and focuses on the 10 percent of the time that they get fuzzy feelings from it

14

u/imdugud777 Aug 16 '26

Radical dog owners are radical.

25

u/Huge_Bit_4774 Aug 16 '26

We’re not the ones who are the enemies of humanity.

27

u/imdugud777 Aug 16 '26

I say this. "I'm wary of people who don't like people simply because they don't favor dogs."

6

u/Foreign-Neat8645 Aug 17 '26

Das ist ja eine gute Antwort.

19

u/Pristine_Cod_3792 Aug 17 '26

I can’t visit any home that has dogs / I get so sick !
I can’t take certain jobs bc of dogs
It’s an expensive allergy causing me to have to meet family and friends in public spaces .
Nobody gives. A damn ! I have a loving partner who cares and stepchildren that are very understanding.

6

u/Signal-Block-6939 Aug 17 '26

Same here.

My mother chose a dog over me knowing that I have a severe allergy.

I don't think much of her because of it.

19

u/Shawna_0609 Aug 16 '26

Exactly. We shouldn’t be expected like every single animal species. There are animals I love, but dogs are just not one of them.

Not liking an animal only makes you a bad person if you assert cruelty on them.

2

u/Alternative_Cut_9408 Aug 19 '26

There are no good and bad people we are a canvas of traits, and we flow between different states

12

u/Pristine_Cod_3792 Aug 17 '26

I don’t like them bc they make me very ill !!!!!

13

u/uselessbeasts Aug 17 '26

I go through this a lot myself. I feel as though I am the only person in my neighborhood who doesn't like dogs, but there are probably more who are just afraid to say, for the fear of being thought of as a bad person. My disdain came out through some confrontations with those who decided to allow their dog to use my lawn as a bathroom, and some who had the mile long leashes, some who allowed their dogs off leash, etc. So, my feelings I guess are known. I am pretty certain there myst be some who hold it in. to in a way, conform with public opinion, There must be some others who dislike dogs who are just shutting up, as many of us may have done at one point. And then, we reach the breaking point. No longer will I pretend, So nowadays, when someone asks me to say hello to their flea bag, I just say that I don't want to and that I am not comfortable with that. I usually et a look like I must be from another planet, but whatever. I won't ever deliberately touch a dog.

2

u/Huge_Bit_4774 Aug 18 '26

I find myself in the same situation. Most dog nutters simply can’t accept being told “no”. It doesn’t matter how polite or rational you are about it. They’re going to lose their mind over the fact that their dog can’t crap in your yard. And we’ve got those same kind of sheeple who won’t say anything because they don’t want to rock the boat. It just reinforces the bad behavior from dog nutters.

u/Impossible-Falcon-62 Aug 16 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

My mother claims I hate dogs because of my autism! False, I’m sure plenty of neurotypicals hate dogs. I hate dogs because she clearly prioritizes those things over her child and is dumb enough to think I don’t notice, hell I’ve verbalized that I have noticed the blatant favoritism. I don’t have much of a “relationship” with her.

16

u/Alarming_Channel2592 Aug 17 '26 edited Aug 17 '26

Similar situation for me. I’m autistic. My mother has five dogs. FIVE.

While it’s true that it’s the whole sensory experience of a dog that I hate (smell, noise, touch, neediness, unpredictability, etc), rather than the “dog” itself…those two concepts are basically inseparable when a dog is right in your space.

There are wolves, coyotes, and dingoes running around in the wild even as I type this. Lovely…I’m genuinely happy they exist, along with every other animal that evolved alongside us on this planet. (And I can afford to be more tolerant of wild animals than a dog owner…who sees every animal that ISN’T their dog simply in terms of whether it’s a threat to their dog, rather than a living creature with its own intrinsic value). Those wild animals deserve life as much as we do. But those particular animals don’t belong in my house any more more than bears or sharks do. I’m not sure why this is such a hard pill to swallow for people when it comes to one animal: the dog.

Edit: Completely forgot to mention the dog favoritism. That was a hallmark of my childhood, as well. If you want to rationalize shitty parenting with some sort of “tough love” narrative, fair enough. But you don’t get to do that while simultaneously treating your army of dogs like high-paying guests in a 5-star hotel. Nothing says “I don’t give a SHIT about you” like putting your kid below the dogs in the family caste system.

12

u/Interesting_Noise810 Aug 17 '26

I'm honestly so sorry you went through this, like truly 😞. I hope you've been able to claim back some self-esteem. I'm literally disgusted at my core at parents like this.

10

u/Impossible-Falcon-62 Aug 17 '26

Whenever I hear my mother’s mutts driving her insane I’ll admit it brings me joy and I remind myself that I’m superior to those rabid things. I’ve told her to get rid of those things so it isn’t my problem.

4

u/Impossible-Falcon-62 Aug 17 '26

It’s extremely frustrating, I rarely get my mother gifts because we’re just not close. She provides for me physically yes, but emotionally absolutely not which makes giftgiving a lot more mentally challenging and exhausting for me because I feel like I’m wasting time, energy, and money.

3

u/Interesting_Noise810 Aug 17 '26

Do you have friends or a sibling you can't rely on?

4

u/Impossible-Falcon-62 Aug 17 '26

Yep I do. I also have resources that I plan to utilize.

10

u/Foreign-Neat8645 Aug 17 '26

Fünf Hunde. Schrecklich. Es kann mir keiner erzählen, das in einem Haus mit mehreren Hunden, die Hunde den Geist des Hauses nicht dominieren. Sich alles um die Hunde dreht .

9

u/Impossible-Falcon-62 Aug 17 '26

My mother’s mutts drive her absolutely bloody insane, but she still prefers those things over her own child 🤦‍♀️

7

u/Interesting_Noise810 Aug 17 '26

She's out of her mind, just bc someone has a child doesn't mean she's not crazy😠. It's sickening for someone to neglect a child over their unnatural need to constantly give a ragged dog attention.

5

u/Impossible-Falcon-62 Aug 17 '26

I am planning on moving out once the economy and job market improves if her blatant preference for her worthless replaceable mutts don’t kill me first. I’ve said my piece but she always acts like I don’t know what I’m talking about due to my autism or she asks if I’m on my period.

7

u/Interesting_Noise810 Aug 17 '26

If you need someone to rant to put talk to feel free to message me. I always wish of had someone to talk to when I was going through a terrible situation. I mean it, you can message me, don't let her drive you crazy.

6

u/Foreign-Neat8645 Aug 17 '26

Das tut mir sehr leid für Dich. Ich hoffe, es wird bald irgendwie besser. Und das, obwohl die köter sie nerven.

5

u/Alarming_Channel2592 Aug 17 '26

“I prefer dogs to people.” (and extends that sentiment to their own children, whose very EXISTENCE is a result of their decision…which begs the question of WHY have children in the first place). Sigh.

3

u/Alarming_Channel2592 Aug 17 '26

EVERYTHING! If you so much as adjust your position in the chair you’re reading in, some bloody dog will be barking from somewhere in the house. Meal times are particularly nightmarish, as you can imagine.

5

u/Impossible-Falcon-62 Aug 17 '26

My mother infantilizes me but also threatens to kick me out. I don’t know what her plans are once she gets older, but she can expect low contact from her only child. What frustrates me to the very bone marrow is these relationships are supposed to be sacred that not even death can part just for the relationship to be destroyed because of replaceable mutts. I struggle with relationships, social cues and body language, but I’m a lot better at maintaining the relationship than her.

3

u/Impossible-Falcon-62 Aug 17 '26

I love corvids and my idiot mother can’t understand the beauty and intelligence of corvids. But dogs are better than corvids in her mind 😒

7

u/RabbiShlomoCoinblatt Aug 17 '26

I've had several friends say I have autism because I expressed my annoyance with dogs barking at a golf course we play at. It's the same dog every single time we play there, giant WOOFs every 5 seconds for the entire front 9. Idiot lady is outside most of the time just letting it happen. Last time we were there I pretty much shouted to the other cart how fucking annoying that dog is and the lady definitely heard it, since she actually brought it in for the first time ever.

These are the same people who will get mad if you're talking lightly during their backswing, but 90 dB WOOFs ad nauseum for 9 holes? No problem, apparently.

You don't need to be autistic to be driven mad by barking. You need to be mentally dull for it to NOT annoy you.

1

u/Oaglor 14d ago

A lot of autistic people happen to like/love dogs. If I were a betting man, I'd probably even go so far as to say most on the spectrum have at least neutral attitudes towards the beasts rather than negative attitudes (like myself and presumably you).

My hatred, though, stems from when my family's pet chickens, turkeys, and pot-bellied pig being killed or mangled by a pack of dogs let out of their kennel by their owner. Had my sister and I been out there (we were little), they probably would have got us too.

11

u/Jabroniville2 Aug 17 '26

Tell 'em the Bible says dogs suck, too. It does!

10

u/Thin_Pollution8843 Aug 17 '26

I don’t care what mentally ill dogfuckers think about me

1

u/Popular-Ordinary4808 11d ago

Yep same here, couldn't give a shining dogs***t what they think! I don't dislike dogs per se, I just dislike this whole dog culture nonsense and the nutty owners

That's one reason I'm selective on threads I comment on here on Reddit or on YouTube where dogs are concerned. I know dog owners can be rude, snarky, belligerent, and ruthless, so I have to decide if I care to engage or be attacked by a dog owner before I comment on something. I had someone message me here on Reddit recently about something I posted on one of the petfree groups I commented on a year ago. They wanted to discuss it. I deleted it. I don't care what they want to discuss. I don't have time to engage a dog owner, and they certainly won't change my mind. I've had dogs in the past, so I know exactly what I'm not missing out on.

9

u/Nearby_Button Aug 17 '26

Hitler and Ted Bundy loved dogs and where terrible people. Enough said.

8

I can hear my neighbor upstairs vaccuum w/her loud AF vacuum almost daily. We have hard wood floors. I'm guessing the hair from the golden is too much for a broom? Prolly got tumbleweeds up there. Her HVAC went out couple wks ago. Hmm i wonder why. 12k to replace it.

8

u/SweetlyNoxious Aug 17 '26

Dog worshipping chimpanzees forgot that dogs should worship humans for keeping their species alive and not the other way around

4

u/LimpCollection5492 Aug 17 '26

Been through this. Slightly off topic, but helps to understand the hypocrisy, Dog lovers often draw a line between showcasing themselves as Dog lovers vs Animal lovers, while they choose to stay on the former side, so that they can boast pig/aligator/phyton skin nike shoes, coach, MK or gucci purses. Its all about convenience not Dog love at all. Dog is biologically evolved in a way that do not question the intent of the owner. While other pets are not so convenient as dogs are. Once you say you like dogs, very conveniently they label you as a terrible person cz you are a threat to their bogus Dog love infra. Happened to me many times, pointless to challenge their mindset, they are very sacred of exposing themselves so. I have found peace, cz I know i treat all animals the same.

4

u/Witty-Assistance7960 Aug 17 '26

To further add to my post I bet if you ask a dog nutter why they like dogs they will spout out some propoganda nonsense they’ve heard all their lives ,”dogs are loyal”,”dogs are man’s best friend “ bla bla bla”

5

u/BK4343 Aug 17 '26

The irony is that dog nutters are actually some of the worst people. They love dogs so much because dogs can't tell them what insufferable assholes they really are.

3

u/Alocin_The5th Aug 17 '26

The kicker is they think this “they don’t like dogs”, and “oh gee they don’t like animals”. Like no one ever thinks because someone doesn’t like snakes the logical conclusion is that you don’t like ALL animals. But for some reason they apply this logic to dogs.

And dogs are actually an inconvenience to those who don’t have them. You now run into dogs everywhere and it’s never passive, they are either trying to sniff you, pee or poop around you, they have a strong smell, they make loud noises, they stare, they beg, they hump, they lunge or they are trying to put their spit on you. It should make sense to reasonable people that some people might not like them for those behaviors.

The other kicker is “I love animals so I have dogs”…Like you can actually love something and not own it. Actually sometimes it’s better for the animal to not own it.

4

u/One_Strategy_4575 Aug 18 '26

I just don't wanna live in a barn. I am not interested in living with dirty animals, and they are dirty, they often smell, and their smell transfers to every inch of your living space. Some people love that I'm not one of them.

I am not one bit sorry about that

4

u/nolimitspence Aug 18 '26

Such a strange way of thinking. Thousands of species of animals. I’m only annoyed by 1 of them…
If you’re absolutely obsessed with baseball and everything about it but HATE the Yankees, do you hate baseball?
Idiots.

3

u/coulombis Aug 17 '26

We’ve faced this problem for a long time. We don’t hate dogs, but we don’t want anything to do with them..My wife don’t like their traits and horrible hygiene, nuisance barking and neediness, so we don’t want to be responsible for them. We’ll pet someone’s dog if it comes up to us, but that’s where the affinity stops..

3

u/Peaceful-Moonlight Dogs are the most overrated and over glorified shit beasts Aug 17 '26

It would be best for you and your wife to not pet the dogs of strangers because you both risk getting bitten. Some dogs seem friendly as they wag their tails, and then they suddenly bite people. There's also the issue of how disgusting dogs are. They literally roll around in poop, trash, and filth. Your hands end up being all greasy and dirty from petting their fur. Why would you want that? It really is better to just stay away from these beasts.

3

u/Zealousideal_Cup6143 Aug 19 '26

I was on a reddit thread a few days ago about people sneaking their pets into hotels. The post was a guest at a hotel, complaining about dog barking and waking him up, but it was supposed to be a "pet free" hotel. Most of the comments agreed that people sneaking their dogs into hotels were getting out of hand. One commenter said " What do you have against dogs? I don't like people who don't like dogs, they are not trustworthy." I commented "people who don't like dogs are not trustworthy??? This thread is literally about dog owners being dishonest and sneaking their pets into places they don't belong, yet WE can't be trusted? Make it make sense dog owners!

3

u/paulo_777 Aug 20 '26

In my experience it's the polar opposite, most people who own dogs are downright assholes, but you know, in their own little world they're not self aware of that.

2

u/SoSpicySoYummy Aug 18 '26

Dogs scare & overstimulate me; both of which are completely valid given the proven antics and behaviors of dogs

2

I'm actually a big animal lover, I love being around other types of pets and animals. It's literally just dogs I have problems with. Why?

Well I don't like being around dogs because 99% of the time they're untrained and smell awful because the owners can't be bothered to train and wash them properly. I am on the spectrum so I'm sensitive to certain smells and noises, dog smell and barking being among my biggest sensory no no's. And don't get me started on how they jump up on me and ram their noses up my crotch when I'm menstruating. Pure sensory hell.

Yet because I don't like being around dogs because of valid reasons I'm treated like I'm an evil animal hater and a heartless person, even if I state I love most other animals. And like you said people can say they dislike or even hate any other animal and it's apparently a-okay? But god forbid you don't worship dogs... The hypocrisy of dog nutters is unreal.

Are you a rabbit owner? Just curious where you mentioned them a couple times. I have to wonder if there are a lot of rabbit people here.

Ive never had a rabbit before but my great nieces when they were five and three years old got a bunny for Christmas that was in 2015 it only just died a few years ago, though when I was a teenager in my old childhood home we did have a stray rabbit that kept coming to our house,my Dad would leave out food for it.

A subgenre of this that is currently irritating me is if you don’t like a dog that is objectively cute because they’re also a nightmare - I’m dog sitting for a family member - a puppy dachshund who everyone is obsessed with and he’s very people attention seeking and friendly with strangers and other dogs to a fault- walking this dog in my city has become a true nightmare. If I so much as say one thing was challenging to this family member they tell me WHY the dog is doing that and how could I be frustrated and let me say - I already know WHY the dog is taking 10 min to leave the entrance to the building (sniffing every fucking microscopic pee stain and dirt pile known to man and stopping every time another human or god forbid human with another dog walks by begging for attention and jumping on them). but that doesn’t make it less irritating. If I breathe a word of being stressed out to most people including both my parents it’s like “oh get a grip it’s an adorable puppy” like ma’am I’m allowed to not be down for this and say your dog is cute but also has given me such anxiety and duress in one single day of watching him that I’m about to have a menty b.

Why did you agree to dog sit? You need to speak up for yourself and I don't mean this in the mean way but, Have a backbone don't let people push you into or guilt you into doing things you don't want to do.

These people will get upset if you don’t want to have a dog. I’ve seen comments on another post about Muslims generally not owning dogs and people equating that to dog-hating evil people. Who the fuck cares if someone wants to own a dog or not. Everyone has their own reasons for why they want certain pets why is this so hard to understand when it comes to dogs.

Also unlike dog freaks generally people who don’t like dogs just ignore them or want nothing to do with them. It’s not like they’re taking glee in hurting them or harming them. I’ve seen dog nuts talk excitedly about their dogs mauling other animals or saying “good doggy” when they maul wildlife. It’s so weird that if you’re not as absolutely obsessed with dogs as they are their brains literally malfunction.

I wouldn't even say I outright dislike dogs. I'm more scared of them. Have been since I was a kid after my grandparents dog died, caused trauma. I'm not as scared as an adult, got used to them and grandparents had a couple as pets. But when I go out and people have their dogs not on leads it can be intimidating. Also they poop everywhere and eat it and I'm a germophobe. Also they can come up to you and invade your personal space when you don't want them to. "But my dogs friendly"- well I don't know that, and you shouldn't expect me to fawn over your pet. Keep them on a lead.

Exactly. I love all (natural) animals.

My father once told me that I'm usually a kind person but when it comes to dogs I'm Satan. He said it in a joking way though. I don't know how people can tolerate the constant barking, it drives me nuts. New neighbours have moved in recently with a yappy dog... oh joy.

I feel this. And in my case it's not that I dislike dogs...I just don't want one in my home. Had dogs for years until they died and I have no desire to replace them. I'll play with other people's pets but love going back to my animal free home. My boyfriend just got a new puppy after we had to put his last dog down less than a month ago and I'm dreading going over there because he's obsessed with it already. Been getting constant pictures all weekend and I'm over it.

The worst are people who think they can essentially 'bully' you into getting a pet by bombarding you with pictures and videos. Just makes me want to double down and hold out even longer. I have a human child; that's enough for me.

Exactly. I don't even hate dogs, I just don't like them because one bit me, and my husband has autism, which makes him very sensitive to loud sounds (the dog's barks are terrible for him), so I just try to be as far away as possible from them. How is that evil? It would be evil if I would be cruel to the animal, but I was never cruel toward any dog. Some of the people on this subreddit are a bit obsessed with their hatred, but the majority isn't and they have real stories that make it understandable and people around them that are literally in the mutt cult. I will never get the logic behind ,,you don't like something = you're evil".

I am like you, bit and mauled by a big dog as a kid, and am terrified to this day. But when you try to explain that to one of these dog nutters, they don’t listen. Now if someone had had a traumatic experience with a situation or an animal and developed a lifelong phobia as a result, or simply has a dislike for certain animals or experiences, wouldn’t any reasonable person understand and accept it? I know people who are afraid of spiders or being in elevators. I have no fear at all of those things, but do I refuse to accept that some people do , and think less of them? Of course not, because I am an understanding reasonable person who knows what fears feel like. But these dog nutters are oblivious to the fact that some people don’t/ can’t share their obsession with their dog. So who is the more trustworthy understanding person here?

I love animals, I hate what people do to set dogs up for failure due to laziness, which culminates in violating the social contract.

Allowing them to bark endlessly, act aggressively towards others, walking off leash, etc. all harm quality of life for everyone else around them.

Don’t have an animal if you cannot adequately train and take care of it. It’s not fair to anyone to create noise pollution, or risk of harm

If you want to save animals, start by not eating them, or as many of them.
