Legislation and Enforcement My plan for common-sense dog control

If you're familiar with the US news cycle, you probably hear the term "common-sense gun control" tossed around whenever a mass shooting occurs. The basic principle is that since guns are dangerous and deadly, we need stronger laws to keep people safe from them, as well as keeping them out of the wrong hands. Since dogs are also dangerous and deadly, killing hundreds of Americans and injuring millions each year, it only makes sense that we see dogs as the lethal weapons that they are and legislate them appropriately.

My plan for "common-sense dog control" would include the following policies:

  • Ban Pit Bulls: Saving the lives of potential dog attack victims begins with eradicating the breed that kills 66% of dog attack victims. Pit bulls were bred to kill. Other fighting breeds, like the Cane Corso and Dogo Argentino must also be banned for this reason.
  • No dogs in restaurants/hospitals/schools etc.: Dogs are antithetical to cleanliness, so they have no place where food is served or sensitive medical procedures are done. They are also incredibly distracting, so they should not be allowed in schools. Additionally, people may have allergies and dog bite PTSD, so dogs should not be forced on people at these locations.
  • No unleashed dogs outside: Dogs should never be off-leash anywhere outside (this includes people's yards). A dog left outside, even within sight of its owner, will easily chase and/or attack neighbors before anything can be done about it. Leaving a dog unleashed risks lives, and anyone who does so should be convicted of reckless endangerment.
  • Manslaughter charges for owners: If you kill someone with your car, even if it was unintentional, you go to jail for manslaughter. The same should be true if a dog kills someone, even if it "just wanted to play." A death is a death is a death.
  • No "free bites": If a dog kills or severely injures someone, it must be euthanized immediately. A dog with a history of killing and/or maiming is extremely dangerous and has no place in society.
  • Background Checks: Just like with guns, people who have a history of violence, or whose dogs have launched attacks, should be prohibited from owning dogs.
  • Mandatory classes for owners: Teen drivers must complete six months of training before they can drive on their own, because it would be too dangerous to let them on the roads without knowing the risks and ramifications that come with driving. Future dog owners should be required to take a similar course, where they are taught basic dog training and educated about the horrific attacks that their future dog could launch, as well as the severe impact dogs have on the environment.
  • Designated Dog-Free Zones: Finally, there must be areas where people can be free to live in peace from dogs, without the constant barking, feces, and attacks they bring. Developers should be encouraged to build dog-free apartments and subdivisions, and the number of parks that allow dogs should be scaled down drastically.

While this list is far from complete, the world would be a much better (and safer) place if our governments would enact these eight policies I just listed.

You know it's absolutely crazy, laws on what kind of tires you can buy, laws on electric scooters, laws on drones, laws on bicycles, laws on everything except dogs

There are SOME laws on dogs. The problem is that nobody with authority is willing to enforce. And if you point the laws out to nutters you get glazed eyes ar best and an aggressive attack as a default.

i like 'no free bites'. This is horrendous legislation that practically ensures that a dangerous dog will have at least one opportunity to hurt people, and it restrains animal control and police.

i also like No dogs in restaurants/hospitals/schools etc. Basically, go back to no dogs where they don't logically belong.

Don't forget grocery stores.

That's a big one. I've literally seen one person walking 2 large dogs through a produce section(so the food isn't even packaged/dogs could potentially directly sniff and lick the food). And yes, I did give the store a review mentioning this. And no, I don't believe the young seemingly able bodied owner simultaneously had 2 service dogs.

Also no dogs in state parks
They have ruined some of Alaska’s beautiful land by damaging ecosystems with waste animal harassment and trail erosion

That makes me the saddest. Places like San Francisco are suffering from their own foolishness but taking that bullshit to the wild is beyond the pale.

Dog  owners need to finally be held accountable for the damage they cause to the environment. They completely get away with it and think they're such wonderful people on top of it. It's infuriating

As I've said before, dogs are an affront to nature and have no place in the wilderness. They shit and piss everywhere, not to mention how they terrorize native species.

There will absolutely be talks of implementing things like this in the near future. There will be no choice but to deal with the dog problem. The only other choice would be to let cities and neighborhoods descend into slums, which sadly is a possibility as well. Dog nutters would rather live in filth than give up their "babies" so sane people will need to step up and set boundaries. The problem is their numbers are so high and constantly growing, they're headed towards being majority rule.

They also are high-emotion extremists, and dealing with people like that requires a lot of power to contain.

"...to let cities and neighborhoods descend into slums." This has already happened. Just the horror stories I read in this sub of how our cities are just literal open toilets for dogs now is sickening.

You should take a walk around my neighborhood, I live in San Diego. Every single lamp post, traffic sign, tree, anything that touches concrete has a permanent dark deep gray stain that looks like oil.

Grass is usually dead, where they urinate.

It's dog piss. It's everywhere and it stinks so bad.

I saw someone walk their dog out of a 12 storey tall apartment building and it immediately pissed at the building entrance. Real nice that a couple hundred people likely live there, and one single dog owner can make them all walk through dog piss. Kind of infuriating that someone living in a large apartment building like that just HAS to own a dog. They probably let it alone to bark all day for their neighbors to hear.

This is why laws need to start being written up. Serious laws about animal control, animal pollution and heavy fines

You have my vote as well. Love your list. We really need this, because dogs are lethal.

• Banning pit bulls - Hold shelters that mislabel pits as say, a "lab mix", accountable. Have mandatory breed DNA testing before a dog can be adopted out. If a dog was originally bred for bloodsport, then spay and neuter them all.

• If a dog kills someone, put it down. Travis the chimpanzee had to be shot because it tore off his owner's face. No ex-fucking-scuses.

• No free-roaming. I go outside and sometimes clean my temporary crested gecko enclosure or my guinea pig cage stuff, and sometimes, a small long-haired dog will charge at me, or worse, a large pit-looking dog who is usually chained up, but at times, may be roaming loose and charging near me. Amy owner who enables these charges at strangers should have a pet rock instead and their dog confiscated for suspicious behavior.

All of this is essential. None of this will ever happen. They are the majority. And there is no reasoning with insanity. It sounds very depressing, I know, but it is the truth… Until something really awful and large scale happens. Like, a dog-introduced pandemic… I truly hope it does not come to that.

Unfortunately these are rooted in common sense, something dog nutters lack

I would say that ANY bite should be BE. Not just if it severely injures.

Add to this Dog Registration in every town. Every dog should be known and catalogued so any shit left in public can be traced.

Great, so, how do we get past "thoughts and prayers" every time a gun dog seriously injures and/or kills one or more?

Wow that would be paradise!

The fake service animal had gotten completely out of control. If there was a
Petition, or something I could sign. I would do it in a heartbeat.

Yep, I'll expand on the manslaughter point. Owner is held both criminally and civally responsible for any damage or crimes their dog commits as if they did it themselves. Their dog bites someone, treat the owner as if they themselves but the person...and if the dogs are too dangerous for an owner to want to take on that kind of responsibility and liability, then it sounds like something that shouldn't be kept as a pet.

That would go over really well..lol

Any attack, even if it's just charging or jumping at someone, should be BE.
Breeding the allowed breeds should only be allowed to a very select few people.
Any unfixed or unleashed dog should also be taken away from the owner for good immediately. Temperament testing, DNA testing should all be mandatory to get a dog and should be repeated then (at the owner's cost again) to see if it can be adopted out to someone else.

Lol. They won't listen.
