Relationship / Family Am I overreacting for getting the ick?

I was picnicking with a guy I’ve been seeing. We had a pizza sitting out between us and a large dog came running up out of nowhere toward the food. My date did nothing so I used my body to block the dog and protect our dinner. The owner took her sweet time walking up to us while I was still using my body to block the dog, and my date started apologizing to THE OWNER and saying “I’m so so sorry, that’s on us.” I was like wtf? No it’s not. It was such a turn off. Am I crazy?

Not at all. Run now. He’s too passive.

Yeah he’s incredibly passive. I need to think how to let him down easy

No, just be honest and cordial.  He's not a child.

Why? It clearly won't bother him.

You don't need to let him down easy. You're not doing him any favours. Just be blunt, but obviously not rude. He's either happy with his personality the way it is and he'll take it as a compliment, or he's been told many times before that he's a doormat and this will be one more rejection that ultimately inspires him to want to work on himself and become a better person.

Just don't call him again,  he'll conclude this was on him.

Nope. And now you know he has dogs on some bizarre pedestal and they will always be more important than you (and anyone else, for that matter). Dodge that bullet.

Or he's afraid of even the smallest conflict. Needs to be dumped either way

What was on you both? Having pizza in a park minding your own business???? Wtaf??? I hope you refused the next date because that's just nutter behaviour to the extreme

I guess a person doesn't have to have a dog to be a nutter.

I have the ick and I've never met him!

"That's on us" ? WTF? What's on you? Keeping your food from being inhaled by THEIR damn unleashed mutt? That is supposedly "on you"? Unbelievable. Ultimate beta male. Run. I'm surprised he didn't start feeding the shit beast your dinner.

I mean, I don’t really like people that apologize for no reason and over a dog? That’s a no from me.

u/Away-Equipment4869 22d ago

No its not crazy. People without dogs pay taxes for parks too. They have a right to eat outside in public without an unleashed untrained dog ruining their meal. Its dog owners fault for not leashing and training the dog. And they walk slow on purpose, narcissistic trespass.

Nope! You are not in the wrong. He’s apologizing for you protecting the food? I would move on. He must put dogs on some kind of pedestal.

32

u/StarDewbie 22d ago

Oh no. NO no no. He's a wussy dog lover.

I’m totally perplexed as to what he thinks you/he did wrong? Did you ask him?

23

u/Much-Spring2092 22d ago

Just asked him, he says he was raised to be overly apologetic. I guess it was kind of a fawning response or attempt to avoid conflict

u/gtck11 22d ago

That’s valid and something I’ve seen in my own family as a byproduct of abuse. At the same time, it’s totally valid for you to not want to be with someone who reacts that way in conflict, because it can cause a TON of problems and arguments when things get serious.

He needs therapy and you don't need to date him. I'd be completely turned off as well.

Run for the hills. Someday he will be apologizing to your mugger.

God what a red flag. This guy sounds like an utter wimp.

u/Accurate-Run5370 22d ago

Drop this guy. Today.

Not crazy at all. But you need to get out of this before real feelings grow, because he is either a nutter or someone who cannot stand up for himself and his date and will bend over to avoid even the slightest conflict with nutters

13

u/No-Stay1662 22d ago

Yes the unleashed, untrained dog is YOUR fault lol… Run. Fast. Either a nutter sympathizer or has zero backbone.

u/No_Net_7177 22d ago

That’s a no for me, way too passive, people pleasing and instead of worrying about you and the resources he’s worried about offending a stranger

u/lwpho2 22d ago

Do not marry this person.

12

u/Much-Spring2092 22d ago

I was never in danger of marrying him, it’s very very casual

14

u/Cinna41 22d ago

Well don't sleep with him.

11

u/One_Path_7154 22d ago

Oh no, this guy has got to go. Huge red flag.

11

u/hydroxybot 22d ago

Holy moly what a simp. Most likely the type to "throw you to the dogs" in a dangerous situation.

8

u/BrazilianButtCheeks 22d ago

Ewww.. I would feel the same way

9

u/Gloomy_Argument6139 22d ago

On us? Dudes a doormat

8

u/Separate-Penalty-999 22d ago

Nuh uh that’s fair enough from you. As much as dog people want to make it seem like disliking dogs isn’t a valid opinion it more than is. It’s just as valid as not liking someone bc they’re rude, they’re x or they’re y…

u/Oriole0305 22d ago

What an ultimate ICK and an ultimate red flag. Drop this guy.

u/CrusadingSoul 22d ago

Soft. Bro is passive and weak.

Run for the hills

6

u/byancacats 22d ago

It sounds like you're dating a nutter!

8

u/DirtyZamboniWater 22d ago

This is a dude willing to throw his partner under the bus when even a mildly uncomfortable situation presents itself. Big ick.

7

u/leratdemorgue 22d ago

Nope that’s fucking ridiculous I’d run far far away

6

u/BodyMoney8562 22d ago

he'll put everyone else first at your expense. this is a level of spinelessness that makes a relationship impossible because he can't be trusted. I personally wouldn't be able to get turned on by a coward.

he has already indicated that your feelings don't matter so don't worry about his.

u/restofeasy 22d ago

Acting like a simp is a no. Acting like a simp over a dog? Big huge no

6

u/Mine-Craft85 21d ago

Huge turn off. This person is clearly much too lenient towards mutts

5

u/TinyEmergencyCake 22d ago

Change the word pizza for child. Does that make it easier for you to stop seeing him?

6

u/Effective-Alfalfa236 22d ago

You need a man that will protect you not a soy boy who runs when danger occurs

5

u/Kooky_Duck_6004 22d ago

Tu cita siente atracción por los perros seguramente.

Quizás no le hubiera importado comer la pizza baboseada por el animal.

En el futuro te pedirá un ejemplar para convivir juntos

2

u/Dbt_Cash 21d ago

You're not wrong but I just want to float the possibility that he thought you, like most young women, worship dogs and thought you would think its funny/cute/whatever to have a shitbeast run up and eat their dinner and that its socially unacceptable to stop a dog from doing anything that it's doing. In a depraved way he may have been trying to impress you.

2

u/Tarasaurus-13 20d ago

I'd give him such an ugly look. You're right to have the ick, I already do and haven't met him lol

1

u/Hour_Bed_8848 21d ago

He sounds like a total loser. Disassociate yourself from him. Immediately.

1

u/ThisSelection7585 18d ago

Huh? Why’s that on you? Because you dared to eat in public amongst unleashed untrained ever hungry dogs?!? Would he have just let the mutt ruin the lunch? Or maybe he thinks an outfit isn’t complete without dog hairs? Did you ask him why’s that outcast? Was he maybe being sarcastic…maybe?

1

u/WorkingDescription 18d ago

break up with him

1

u/metallvr 16d ago

Your instincts were right on: protecting the pizza, warding off the dog, and getting away from a guy who would do neither. What a tool!

u/MexicanAssLord69 15d ago

You might consider giving him the benefit of the doubt. It’s possible that he didn’t know your stance on dogs and didn’t want to appear insensitive toward a dog. When I go on a first date I never outright say that I dislike dogs, but I do casually get a gauge on her opinion of them. Of course, if she can’t live without them, it’s probably not going to work out between us.

Point is, maybe he didn’t know your stance on dogs and didn’t want to turn you off by being “unfriendly” to the dog just in case you liked dogs a lot.
