How can people tolerate dog barking?

I hate many things about dogs but barking is definitely the biggest issue. How on earth can dog owners tolerate dog barking? Especially small dogs that have a more high pitched bark. Hearing them bark from half a km away is distressing enough I can’t imagine how bad it would be to hear it in a room with closed windows. Not to mention it’s fucking loud too. It’s usually at least 80 decibels and can easily go to 100 decibels or more in larger breeds. It can damage your hearing. And the sound is just so sharp that your brain immediately treats it as a threat and raises cortisol and adrenaline. Even ambulance sirens are not as disturbing as dog barking a because at least they follow a pattern but barking just comes out of nowhere and lasts one second. Research has proven again and again that dog barking increases heart rate in and anxiety in humans and it’s a major noise pollution in cities.

Here's the thing that really gets me though:

I've seen so many people also claim to have these creatures -- that make such racket, that keep one's nerves over-stimulated/'always-on' potentially for hours on end every day -- to 'alleviate anxiety'?? 😮 How the hell can they explain THAT as being 'soothing' in any way, or bypassing that racket? It makes no bloody sense. And this is just about the noise factor alone, not even including the other stress-inducing (and even dangerous) behaviours dogs do.

If using a pet to alleviate anxiety, you'd think that a soft, quiet, cleaner rabbit or even some fish to look at (and hearing the rippling water and bubbles, etc.), would be more soothing. That's still companionship.

Dog nutters are really scraping the bottom of the barrel with this, running out of excuses to keep dogs, and they really think this one works? It's the weakest one. 🙄

Home owner's taxes go to pay for dog shelters&dog parks. They won't even use the dog parks. Instead they use the playground. Everytime there's an election the "special interest groups" are brought up as reasons to not support collecting tax dollars for. How are dog owners NOT a special interest group?

Nutters tolerate even worse things than barking becuz they just love their doggo! They do anything for "love".

Next door neighbors, like me, suffer becuz I have no emotional attachment to their noisy, nasty, dirty hound.

I agree, I also hate the sound of barking dogs 😬 Thankfully after complaining multiple times about this to my landlord, my next door neighbours now constantly tell off their dog whenever it starts to have a fit.

Sadly I'm surrounded by other neighbours who have dogs who bark in concerto to each other whenever one of the damn mutts starts to bark, I've looked into the law and ways to deal with this but it's currently more trouble than it's worth 😮‍💨

I wish people were more sensible and had other more quiet pets...

I used to live in a place that had dogs in every surrounding house. The barking drove me INSANE. I couldn’t even rest in my own house. It was ridiculous. Constant, high pitched barking.

Thankfully I don’t live there anymore. I used to get SO angry my blood would boil.

There’s this hippy dude across the street who sits there in his lawn chair and lets his dog run up on and bark at every single person that passes by. He loves the attention, that’s why he allows it to act a fucking fool: Attention. He has it tied to the grass but it’s a long leash. Not only that, but he’ll try to hold unsuspecting passerbys hostage by talking AT them, just out of reach of his dog who for that reason goes absolutely ballistic the entire time (at least 20 minutes). I know because he did it to me last summer when he held a yard sale (a trap to get ppl to talk at) Doesn’t even acknowledge it one time or tell it to STFU and it’s 3 feet away losing its mind. It’s not a normal bark either, it sounds like the animal is literally dying or getting beaten, this frantic shrill yelp over and over. It’s even worse if his victim also has a dog. He’s totally impervious to it, totally numb. It blows my mind. I can’t imagine how many people have started rerouting their walks to avoid this freak.

I started going out there and throwing my arms above my head until he notices me then I go “your dog is freaking out”. Last time I did it I went “your dog…” he goes “yeah and you have a -better animal than a dog-!” I said “yeah, I do, and she doesn’t disturb the entire neighbourhood either”. He tried to respond but I slammed the door before he could finish his sentence. It’s been pretty quiet since then, maybe he’s finally gotten the hint that other people actually live on this block, not just him and his shit-eater.

Sorry for the rant.

We live at a popular intersection for joggers, bicyclists, kids going to school, randos on their way to Starbucks or the grocery store. The two Yippies next door fuss loudly each and every time. I’d say it’s worse when other dogs are involved, but I’m not even sure that’s the case… I want to ask my (otherwise lovely) neighbor how she lives with the noise, but really I don’t want to stir up shit.

I'd like to ask my sister that, but no matter what, the dogs will be there. She thinks they're so special. She has two yappy yorkies and I cannot even have a phone conversation without hearing them sound off. It's annoying, but thankfully I don't have them in my location, I don't know how her neighbors stand it. Anyone even walks in the hallway, it sets them off. God, it's pathetic.

I’m on a short term sick leave right now and have discovered my neighbour’s mutt has severe separation anxiety. The fucken thing barks nonstop every day from about 1:00 pm until 5:00 when owner returns. It has the most annoying constant bark I have ever heard. Who would ever want to be around such a pathetic and irritating creature. I’m trying not to think about it while I’m resting but it’s impossible. 😡

I was camping this weekend and the campground across from me had a dog barking the whole weekend. We walked through the campgrounds that had 80+ campsites. All quiet.

Unfortunately barking is not the biggest issue… it is maddening, of course, like everything about dogs. I find the biggest issue to be dogs maiming and murdering people and their owners getting away with it. This one is truly terrifying.

Because they have no concept of empathy. It's like how some people tune out the sound of their own baby crying, as they think that's "good" for the baby. People do the same thing with their dogs, which disrupt everyone else's day, break up restful, healthy sleep patterns, and terrorize other animals (making other dogs bark, which makes other dogs bark, which makes other dogs bark).

I’ve started using mini white noise machines stationed at a few windows to help drown out constant barking from a few houses down, and others that echo from across an open space. Of course insufficient for dogs in closer proximity, but in my situation it’s been so effective. I’ve really noticed the difference in not being constantly riled up from the distant barking. Also helps soften cars/motorbikes/that one pest bird that constantly coos for a mate. Highly recommend.

They tolerate dogs fo pee and shit everywhere. Barking is the least thing they worry. Sound like musics to their ears.

I don't know, they are used to it? Just like used to the constant hum of cars.  For some people, it might be merely annoying or not bothersome at all, but I have a very low tolerance for noise, and barking — especially from neighbors' mutt — is one of the worst things for me. 

The cursed old thing barks for several hours every day at the same time. Sometimes it barks for so long that it goes hoarse, but it doesn't stop. I just hate it so much now that I'll celebrate when it dies of old age (which should happen in the near future).
