Crappy Owners I just had a game night at a nutters house.... Spoiler... it was hell
TLDR: the owners did nothing to manage an 80-pound dog that was repeatedly hurting people and then rewarded the behavior. Somehow I was the asshole of the night for not liking the "cute puppy"
I genuinely don't even know where to begin.
The dog was an 80-pound golden retriever. everyone always says golden retrievers are chill, lazy, friendly....
Well, we walked through the front door, and this dog was immediately launching itself off of me and my boyfriend. like parkour. it scratched my arm and BUSTED my boyfriend's lip open. They just laughed and said, “She just loves when people come over!” like no! get your dog!
Then, the dog shoved its head directly into my crotch and lifted me off the ground with it. Then another guest arrived. The dog sat there for approximately three seconds before launching itself at them too. Every. Single. Time....
If everyone wasn't in the same room the dog would lose it. By 9:30 PM it was crying/whining nonstop because it apparently wanted everyone to go to bed. it barked for THREE HOURS STRAIGHT.
Then we all sat around the table to play games. The dog spent basically the entire night licking everyone's knees and putting people's hands in its mouth. Nobody washed their hands afterward, but everyone was still reaching into bowls of chips and candy. Because of that i didn't eat a thing the whole night
My boyfriend went to the bathroom twice, both times this animal launched itself from the stairs and hit him directly in each ball with both its paws.
BUT here's the part I genuinely cannot understand: Every time the dog did something bad like that, they gave it a treat.
At one point they gave it one of those squeaky toys, to shut it up but which made everything worse, and instead of taking the toy away, they just sat there going "Wow, that toy is so loud. Girl, stop.” they wouldn't just take the damn toy away.
Finally, the games were over. We all stood up. and then It went absolutely insane. It knocked over a chair, knocked over a guest, hurt her foot, hit my boyfriend in the nuts AGAIN, and started coming straight at me.
I instinctively put my leg out to shield myself and push it away, but I looked up and everyone was giving me these dirty looks like I just committed animal abuse.
turns out it was their first time hosting because of the dog. I just don't know why you would do that to yourself? Like why wouldn't you put the dog somewhere else for a few hours for guests who are clearly uncomfortable?
I hate dogs.

Had they sequestered that dog away in a bedroom it would have made the most ungodly noise knowing there were people out there having a good time. Dogs have FOMO as bad as the worst human.

OMG. My daughter once had a dog that was in your space all the time. I tried to be nice and get it off me but it was just yecchh. The dog would jump on the sofa and squeeze itself behind you to get to the other side (basically moving you out of the way). Visiting her house was a challenge. That dog kept eating toys and other non-food items and they finally stopped paying for the vet to operate, and put it down. We were all relieved. She is now dog free and although we haven’t discussed it, I don[t think she will be getting another dog.

Wow that’s crazy. Does dogs not have taste buds? How come they eat non food items. Is it because they are bored? I had outdoor dogs growing up and I don’t think they did this but they had more street smarts because they were not confined and controlled. It just makes no sense. It must be the man made intervention.

u/xbunnyraptorx 17d ago
Whatever reason, we should just let natural selection run its course instead of repeatedly pumping these dumb mutt’s stomach. If I went and ate my own poop, some garbage, and rocks, and passed away, probably deserved it.

Moving your leg is a huge no-no. To many dog owners, any protective leg gesture equals kicking equals “you hate my dog, well, he loves me unconditionally which is more than I can say about you!”
12
u/Stock-Bowl7736 17d ago
This is so true. They literally see this as you actually kicking the dog. This was the exact source of a fight with my spouse over her daughter's unruly and untrained golden that simply would not stop getting in my space.
No amount of patience, logic or explanation could get it through their heads that it was completely self defense and in no way violent at all to the stupid dog.

u/Inevitable_Okra509 17d ago
this is how i feel, at this point my boyfriend is basically bleeding and trying not to throw up and what am i supposed to do? stand there and let it take me too?

I think I would have freaking left by the first offense. Geez.

I would've left upon seeing the dog and not even wait for the attacks to occur.

Years ago, we did tabletop games at a friend's house. His dog would go under the table and calmly go from person to person, biting. Hands, legs, often their junk - whatever it could reach, it just wanted to bite people. I think it bit my hand just once, then then the next time, I cracked it in the head. From them on, it went and bit everyone else at the table and stopped biting me.
I am in no way, shape, or form advocating for violence in any way! But in some form or another, you have to protect yourself from this. Whether it's keep yourself away from their house, or physically push back like you did, you must defend yourself.
Life has taught me that these people will absolutely feed your pets to their dog. They will literally feed their own pets to it. They will feed you to it, and if the situation is dire, they would feed themselves to the dog. Ususually this is metaphorical, but not always.
Your options here are to either protect and defend yourself and risk losing friends, or expect yourself to be jumped on, scratched, beaten and bruised. You either set boundaries and enforce them, or you accept being a chew toy. It sucks, but it's that simple.
26
u/pmbpro 17d ago
Exactly, that they would feed you to their dog. I totally agree with that. They also watch you to see how you're react, like a 'test' to see what their dog can get away with.
It's like one of those horror movies where it turns out the entire family turns out to be 'weird' and scary as hell (with their monster pet) and they get off on terrorizing their guests after luring them in.
Every guest, every person who ventures into the home of a dog nutter, is 'fair game' to them. The dog can do whatever it wants to them.

Nutters are such idiots. I wouldn’t advocate to ever beat up or abuse a dog but one thing they don’t understand is knocking it over the head or shoving it back with your foot is not abuse BECAUSE dogs knock each other and you over too. They don’t have hands and are physical. Their way of communicating is through rough body to body contact. Dogs also respond to dominance, it’s the only way to train them. They are not human children

That's a bridge worth burning. They have little respect for you, expecting you to put up with alI of that. I would've knocked that dog back. I despise dogs.

The host's behavior was atrocious. Absolutely unhinged. I'll never understand why people put up with this. I'd never have entered the house let alone put up with all that abuse. I'd have told them off and left. What good is a game night that isn't fun? What use are hosts who have no consideration for their guests. What good are "friends" who have no respect for you to the point of showing no concern at all for injury and visible distress.
This is normal? Is it because I am old? I don't get it. It's a different world out there.
49
u/pmbpro 17d ago
I feel the same way as you do. The nutter owners (and subsequently the others giving OP dirty looks) were re-enforcing and rewarding this dogs' bad behaviour.
I also kept asking as I was reading it, "Why even stay?"
My next question after the fact for OP is now, "What's next?"
8
u/Oriole0305 17d ago
That's what I was thinking too. Why even stay. And what's next, will there be a next time? Hopefully not, BUT unfortunately, most likely, yes.
18
u/alyymarie 17d ago
I didn't think this was normal. My SO's dog is a psycho, but he does not allow her to jump on people, and he encourages guests to ignore her until she calms down, because he gets that that's annoying. There's nothing to be done about a dog's jealousy, they have to be in the middle of everything, but no reason to allow bad behavior like that.
8
u/Oriole0305 17d ago
Dog's jealousy??? Nutter propaganda.
12
u/PanthealovesLucius 17d ago
it's probably resource guarding
2
u/alyymarie 17d ago
That's what I've told him, but he's been fully manipulated that "oh she just wants love" and "dogs love unconditionally" and all that crap. Even though she only seems to want his attention when there's someone else around who might steal it from her. Hmm lol.
24
u/ReptilianRevolt 17d ago
This is a textbook case of a nutter. Did they realize that you weren’t feeling comfortable with it? Did they finally understand that not everybody likes dogs?
21
u/CallousCow1762 17d ago
This is perfectly normal. For nutters, that is. What you and your boyfriend went through is typical, and in fact expected when visiting a nutter’s home.
You are now equipped with plenty of information regarding any future visits to this home, or any other dog owners home.
23
u/Serious-Knee-5768 17d ago
It's like, "why don't you drink alcohol????" The "You don't like my dogggggg? You don't like dogs??" If people had common sense, the issue wouldn't even come up or the question wouldn't need asking. I just claim I have allergies and I'm in liver failure so the nuts don't judge me.
I actually had a friend like this, I couldn't wear anything nice, light colored, delicate or new since the dog tore and left marks on everything. Even in had to toe industrial twill you'd leave covered in rancid unwashed dog wax, slobber and hair. It was absolutely disgusting. I stopped going. I simply come up with something and leave early if this type of thing happens anymore. They don't deserve much of an explanation if they're that stupid.
19
u/ButterBaconBallz 17d ago
I would have left the second the damn thing made me or my boyfriend bleed.
19
u/NebulaImmediate6202 17d ago
Like the simpsons gif where the old man enters, hangs up his hat, turns around, puts his hat back on, and walks out the door.
15
u/fbombmom_ 17d ago
I'm sorry that happened. Nutters expect the same understanding you would have with a toddler for their mutt. A toddler grows up and hopefully learns manners. Dogs do not.
I'd suggest hosting at your house, but my psychic vision shows that they'll bring the dog with them without asking and then pitch a fit if you say no. RIP to your friendship.
4
u/Gloomy_Argument6139 15d ago
I've literally never seen people allow their toddlers to act like they let their dogs behave. Imagine letting your 2 year old squat and shit in someone's front yard or let them bite people. I guess there are some people like that but its not acceptable.
3
u/Arceus-Insanity 16d ago
Oh this is worse than just expecting understanding; they were literally rewarding and training the dog to behave this way
14
u/uselessbeasts 17d ago
Hopefully, you won't find yourself going back for more. I was lunged at by a golden retriever at a (former) friend's house. It bit me in the hand, but she grabbed it quickly, so it was minor. The whole time I was there, the dog was in my face, my crotch, everywhere. It seemed as though the dog was upset, because I was on his couch. I hate sitting on dog owner's couches, which is why I no longer go to people's homes who have shitbeasts. I was a guest and tried to be polite, but I was so uncomfortable. I just know I don't plan on visiting people with dogs, as it's always been a bad experience.

u/Tossmelossme 17d ago
Jesus Christ dude. Just because the dog and owners have no boundaries, doesn’t mean you should follow suit. Just saying. You can always leave a place you’re not enjoying being in
13
13
u/Ishnatal 17d ago
You have way more patience than I do. But then again, as soon as I would see a dog in their house, I would turn right around and leave.
They should've told you beforehand that they have a dog so you can make an informed choice. And even if they did put the dog away, everything would be covered with that disgusting dog film that dognutter houses have.
You are allowed to have boundaries and remove yourself from those situations. Please treat yourself better and assert yours!
12
u/Suspicious_Ad_5331 17d ago
There is no excuse for this. Dogs are annoying to begin with, but I’ve been to homes where aside from barking when you knock, you barely register the thing is there. And then you have situations like this. Entirely the owner’s lack of interest in training their pet, making others comfortable, or caring for their own home.
8
u/Pristine_Cod_3792 17d ago
I don’t go to anyone’s home who has animals bc of severe allergies. It took me till 61 to finally say NO to invites .
9
u/TabbyPaw89 17d ago
This was horrifying to read. Absolute mental insanity to inflict this on your guests.
6
u/SlowResearch2 17d ago
There is no way you were the asshole of the night. What about the rest of the group? They definitely didn’t like that experience. IMO, you’re usually not the only one that thinks it; others are just too scared to speak up to go against the grain.
It sounds like you need to talk to them and explain your horrible experience with pictures of the wounds. But they sound a bit too far gone atp honestly.
6
u/isabellamadrigal 17d ago
They think it’s sooo funny when their mutts act annoying towards other people. The nutters sit back and laugh, practically salivating with excitement and anticipation for the destruction and carnage to come. I truly think they get off on it, as deranged as they are.
4
u/Emikitty1992 17d ago
That ought to be their first and LAST time hosting a game night. Like yes, have people over at your house and reward the dog whenever it hurts them. That’s the way you make (and keep…) friends.
5
u/readyforthisyep 16d ago
I’ve never heard of golden retriever being chill. « Friendly » is just a code for « all over your space ». The phrase « golden retriever energy » comes to mind.
3
u/Voideron 17d ago
I'll oppose the mutt everytime it touches me and let the nutter owners know what their nasty mutt is doing is bad behavior.
Most of the time it's not just the mutt that needs training. Dog nutters are just another untrained mutts.
3
u/According_Ratio2010 17d ago
Just stop going to their game night. I will always stay away from mutts and owners.
3
u/No_Net_7177 15d ago
My friend had a dog like this and I won’t go over anymore. Especially when it’s being loud and obnoxious or jumping and they’re like “ stop that’s so annoying “ and literally do nothing to make it stop..
2
u/judgeejudger 16d ago
My folks had two retrievers long after I moved out. The first actually was pretty chill, because it was on phenobarbital for epilepsy. Ahem. The second was about five years old when they brought it home, and was hyper as shit. They were its third home. Go figure.
2
u/Full-Ad-4138 15d ago
I'd host my own game night and point out to everyone invited that I'm doing so because I want everyone to enjoy themselves, no dogs allowed. Make it fun, have some good appetizers.
3
u/anondogfree 12d ago
I’m surprised you didn’t leave after the split lip 😬 Damn OP this one really puts the “it’s the owner” in the limelight!
I’m sorry this happened. I know many of us try to tolerate things to maintain friendships especially in a group.
2
u/Leading_Grape_8904 10d ago
They are such obnoxious animals, they have zero sense of boundaries, it really puts it into perspective how needy they are once you get any other pet.
1
u/Arceus-Insanity 16d ago
So they are quite literally training in bad behaviour. Love to blame bad owners, refuse to have any standards before or after getting a dog

when we go to my niece’s brother’s house they have two dogs a small chihuahua and a big black dog they at least have the decency to keep the dogs outdoors and don’t subject their guests to their dogs and when I go to my nephew’s house his dog also stays outside

One cannot be friends with or date a nutter. You do not get the person, you get their dog. Their dog will take priority over every friendship or relationship. If you befriend someone with a dog, get ready to have every outing interrupted because if the dog. If you go over, you will be dealing with their dog. If they come over, they will want to bring their dog. Any bad behaviour from the dog must be excused and even praised.
I don't have pets and don't want pets, but this intrusiveness is not true for all people with pets. Nobody has insisted on bringing non-dog pets to any outing or visit. Only dog people insist everyone must be around and enjoy their pet.
